Zoom Player (HTPC/Tablet/Desktop media player)

Hi everyone, I created a specific thread to help make it easier to keep up with Zoom Player development instead of creating an announcement with each final version.
The first post will always be updated with links to the latest beta and final versions along with a useful change list.
I will update this thread with announcement of new version releases, answer any of your questions and even discuss a few technological issues I encounter from time to time.

DOWNLOAD . The full change history

We have released the 4K version of the Zoom Player onyx skin:
http://www.zoomplayer.com/skins/gui/Onyx%204K.zps

To install, simply open the "Onyx 4K.zps"file within Zoom Player.

Make sure you are running version 9.5 to ensure it works correctly.
This skin can be used on a regular 1080p TV to help the visually impaired as it uses really big buttons and timeline fonts that are much easier to read.

I tried Zoom on the suggestion of another forum member and liked it so much that I purchased it.
On my previous Windows install, Zoom worked beautiful out of the box.
I had to do a clean re-install of Windows and somehow Zoom has lots of tearing when playing my .wtv files. I've got it mostly figured out I think. But it should be nice if there was some sort of "guide" on how to get the best picture out of Zoom using all those little codecs and other things it asks to install.

Also, I am having a hard time finding out how to play 3D .mkv files with Zoom.

CZ Eddie:
For the best picture, you set the video renderer to MadVR and read about how to best configure MadVR (MadVR is not specific to Zoom Player and there are many guides to setting it up).

For decoding, for most common formats, you should use LAV Filters, which are already the default for the common formats.

With regards to 3D .mkv files, you need a 3D TV that works in the 3D format the video was encoded with.

Blight,

When I first got into HT, I bought a copy of ZP Pro and it worked great for DVDs. As I switched over to BDs I moved away from ZP to MPC and then MPC-HC. Since ZP supports LAV and MADVR - the filters I use in MPC, what does ZP offer over MPC-HC?

In the past, the presets were a nice feature (I run a CH setup). Are subtitles handled better? Why should I switch?

Regards,
Matt

nightfly85:
Mainly UI and customization features, which are far more flexible in ZP compared to any other player. Especially the work to make the UI far friendlier for touch-input devices like the many $99 full windows tablets that are out this month.

With regards to subtitles, ZP might have a bit more integrated support for XySubFilter than MPC-HC or other players.

CZ Eddie:
I skimmed through the report. It looks like ehat has it noted.
I plan to do another massive bug-sweeping session for the more obscure bugs near the release of 9.6 final, hopefully within the next 2-3 weeks or so.
At that point I will have more time to go in-depth with this issue.

I've been using ZP for years, but also use MPC-HC on laptops or friends' computers, since it's free.

However, I stick with ZP Max (as an external player for XBMC/Kodi) for my HTPC primarily because of the built-in screensaver, which MPC doesn't have -- better for my plasma. I frankly don't use any of the library or file handling functions, since XBMC excels at that area.

MPC-HC's built-in subtitle handling is nice, but you can use either XYSubFilter or ffdShow within ZP to accomplish the same thing.

Are you saying that Zoom is capable of playing 3D mkv files (or blu-ray disks)?
Is 3D supported?

There are several 3D formats, SBS (side by side), blue/red, blue/green, etc.
ZP plays them as-is, it's the TV that takes the input and converts into something that is "3D".

Zoom Player MAX v9.6 beta 3 has been released.

Major rewrite dealing with how ZP handles mouse/touch input in the fullscreen navigation interfaces.

Hot corners can be used in windowed mode (optional, default off), an ability to lock the UI to prevent accidental clicks and bug fixes.

I have been using ZP for many many years. It is the best player for my needs (mostly an external player for WMC wtv). But I think it would be much more popular if it had more than just a plain file browser. I bet ZP would skyrocket if it had "media browsing" features similar to Mediabrowser, or XBMC, or Media Portal, or even WMP/WMC.

Announcing Zoom Player v10 final!

In version 10 we made great strides in making Zoom Player's fullscreen user interface and user experience much more accessible and intuitive.

But that's not all, a new pre-configuration wizard lets you automatically configure Zoom Player based on the device used, be it a regular desktop PC, a Home Theater PC or a Tablet/Touch device.

New fullscreen navigation interfaces can be used in v10 to easily configure the media library without having to exit fullscreen mode and switch between Audio and Subtitle streams with ease.

New "Hot Corners" usability feature that easily accesses dialogs or additional functionality with the mouse or touch input.

New support for custom functionality assigned to the 4th and 5th mouse buttons.

New patterns for the customizable fullscreen navigation interface, including visually enhanced default patterns.

Better 4K video playback using MadVR and a large frame buffer.

In v10, load time was improved, especially when running an initial configuration.

What's more, the new thumbnail view interface is the starting point for v12 which will include an API to add 3rd party media scraping plug-ins as well as a default plug-in for The Movie Database to automate online scraping of additional meta-data and movie posters.

Please leave feedback, especially with regards to the new media library thumbnail view mode.
Good start. Hoping for more!

Some quick suggestions:
- Thumbnails do not work for WTV file type. This is WMC mpeg2 container. ZP custom playback is configured and working.
- Ability to include/exclude specific file types from displaying in each Library.
- Control how to sort items. Like sort by title, or date created, or size, etc.
- Ability to turn off "loop scrolling", meaning when you get to the bottom or top of items just stop and don't loop back around.
- Ability to group Tv Series into virtual folders/icons that contain all the tv shows with the same title.
- Control Bar button to easily go back to the Library and/or option to automatically go back to the Library if press STOP.

EDIT: Just found how to sort items by title, or date, or size etc.
ALSO found that WTV files do NOT even show up in the Library at all. No thumbnail, no file at all for WTV.

1. I'll look into WTV files, but double check the WTV extension is listed under video files in adv. options / file extensions.
2. The filtering of media files is done by type (audio/video/image), if there is rational for doing it by specific extensions, I'd like to understand it.
3. You can already do this by bumping the right side or by accessing the functions page using the mini-menu.
4. To prevent accidental loop scrolling, I've used a "bump glow" effect and loop scrolling only triggers if you try to bump while the glow is visible. What is the reason behind wanting to completely disable it?
5. That would be more difficult, not currently on the table, not before I get online scraping going, then you can feel free to bring it up again.
6. There is a media library navigator button on the control bar, you just have to enable it, you can do so through the options dialog or by right-clicking the control bar (outside the timeline area) and selecting which buttons are visible.
7. You can have a "stop" action also open the media library using the keyboard editor.

1. Got it. WTV files now showing in Library, but thumbnails are SCREWY. All it shows is multicolored zig zag colored patterns for the thumbnail.
2. My Tv Shows folder contains WTV files as well as the commercial skip files xml and log. Those are being picked up and shown in the Library thumbnail view!

EDIT: CLICK HERE FOR SHORT WTV FILE

EDIT: Posting a screen shot of ZP Library showing how all the thumbnails for WTV files are SCREWY. Strangely there are exactly 3 WTV out of 121, that do actually show a good thumbnail. Figure that out!

I'm downloading the sample file to investigate this issue later.
It's possibly related to how LAV decodes WTV files, make sure you have the latest version of LAV filters installed.

XML and LOG files will show in the folder if you enable the setting to show text files.

I tested the WTV file and it seems the problem is that the sample grabbing filter (the Microsoft component used to grab images from a video) is reporting the wrong resolution for these videos, possibly because LAV is somehow confusing the sample grabber or because the video stream aspect ratio changes is somehow confusing the sample grabber.

I contacted nev, the author of LAV Filters and provided my insights as to what is going on, but I recommend that you also post on the doom9 forum's LAV thread as it's not something I can fix myself.

Ok, nev replied that the issue is that MS's sample grabber filter is incapable of handling clips that dynamically change (I'm not sure if it's resolution or aspect ratio).

The answer is finding an alternative or writing my own (which may be possible at some point).
