Doesn't it seem like we're all in some sort of beta program anymore?

Fortunately Nvidia has (sort of) learned their lesson. They roll out new versions to the preview group first because we generally want the latest and we want it yesterday. Most of us then really run the Shield through its paces and report back all the bugs or complain about things we don't like lol

Well no matter how much testing you, there will always be bugs and in a way the user is the best tool for finding bugs because each person has different settings set, different apps ect ect so it's way easier to find bugs. I hope that people who join preview programs know this, and not just signed in to get the updates first and then hate the product.

Having a problem getting my Shield to pass HDR through my Marantz 7703 to my HDR10 and Dolby Vision capable display. I know the Shield isn't DV capable but the specs say it's HDR. Any thoughts? Was using Vudu, Netflix and Amazon, all allow 4K but none show HDR.

Make sure your TV has it's HDMI port set to Enhanced (or the comparable setting on your particular make/model) and that the Shield is set to a mode that will support HDR (4K, Rec 2020, 4.2.2, etc) and it should work.

My Shield is set to 4K, Rec 2020, 4.2.2 and the HDMI port on the UMAX 85 is set to Enhanced. No matter if it is hooked up to the 7703, the UMAX 85 direct or the HDMI input of the Oppo 203 I still don't get HDR. The Roku 4K Ultra hooked up through the 7703 gives me both HDR and Atmos. About to get an Apple 4K TV.

Before writing off the shield, have you bothered to report this problem direct to Nvidia, either through the Shield's own feedback, or by going to the Shield on-line chat support?

And I don't mean the Shield forum, I mean the actual Nvidia Shield on-line chat support?

I’ve been a Shield user/supporter for a couple of years but when they didn’t move up to Dolby Vision I realized I needed to find something else. Your Shield does support HDR though, you just need to find the right settings but I have to say that if you are not a gamer or have an absolute requirement for Atmos, Apple TV 4K blows the Shield away for straight high quality video and the SOC is rock solid and fast.

Are the 4k streams actually using HDR or are they DV? Not all 4k on those services support HDR.

I have three UHD movies from Vudu that are specifically HDR 10. None of them will play on the Shield in HDR. Netflix and Amazon don't generally specify whether their HDR content is DV or HDR 10, but the fact that none of them will play in HDR on the Shield is an indicator to me that HDR is broken on the Shield. My Roku 4K Ultra has no problem playing HDR 10 content from Amazon, Netflix and Vudu.

HDR works in all those apps for me on the Shield TV. Mine runs through Denon x4200 and on to an LG C6 OLED.

I would suggest trying a new HDMI Cable, 18gbps, and if all else fails, a Reinstall of the OS. Reinstalling the OS for me has fixed issues I've encountered with my Shield such as issues with Amazon instant back in 2015 prior to the app becoming officially supported on the Shield, and most recently, handshake issues which would literally crash my Sony TV.

New Jetson boards with the latest TEGRA are inbound, but still no announcement of new SHIELD hardware beyond the upcoming BFG monitors, in case anyone was wondering. Computex is going on, so we'll see some of those on display. I'll update this thread with anything new about the hardware in those, when I get some info.

While I do not own Nvidia, I suggest you try to play the biggest .m2ts file within BDMV folder.
BDMV>STREAM>and choose the largest .m2ts file.

Be a little more specific: they don't play at all? They play, but without sound?? You get what error message, if any?? What type of sound track is within the files?? Are you playing via an avr receiver, if so, which brand, model?? Using what standard of HDMI cable?? Or are you connecting direct to a TV? What brand, model, which hdmi port??

I have played such files via both Kodi and SPMC on my Nvidia via hdmi through my NAD T775 AVR.

Yea this fixed it, just had to rummage through the folders and find the largest m2ts file. Thanks.

That's not always going to work. Lots of movies have branching playlists that piece together multiple m2ts files to show you the whole movie. Try any Disney movie, especially Pixar ones like Toy Story, and you'll see what I mean.

Hey everyone - quick question on the NVidia Shield

does it natively support HD Audio formats like DTS-HD and Dolby True HD?

I had hoped to run Plex but will gladly run Kodi if that will work better.

Thanks!

It does. I didn't a long time ago, but as long as you've updated within the past two years it'll work.

No - I don't think you understood what he was saying... In the **Marantz** setup menu, under Video (I think it is) there is a settings something like HDMI TYPE. By default it is set to Standard or Normal, which does NOT do the high end 4K resolutions or HDR. You have to change it to the other setting, something like Enhanced I think it's called, and that should resolve it.

Forcing Netflix to 4K60

Hi - For various reasons I highly prefer to keep my Shield system settings set at 4K 24hz, system wide. However, when set this way, Netflix will NOT play in 4K HDR. From experiments, it seems the settings have to be in 4K *60hz* (not 24hz) to get Netflix to show any 4K HDR options. Is there a setting, either in the Netflix shield app, or on the Shield itself, which I can tell it to switch to 4K 60hz specifically for Netflix, while keeping the default resolution for all other apps to 4K 24? Thanks!

I had seen Your inquiry, as nobody replied, yet, here is my 2 0,02€ !
The resolution change is "per App". If there is no request from Netflix App to change it (remember you have to wait for the streaming to adjust to 2160), than, no there is no other settings in the NSATV, unless changing resolution to 4.2.2. bt2020 4k 59.95.
