The only niggle, which eventually became so annoying that I did get a new AVR, was the issue of windows/apps opening on the AVR's "monitor" thus being invisible. Blindly using hotkeys to move windows around or switching TV inputs just so I could see what was on the AVR's screen got old fast.

All I can suggest it trying the latest nightlies of the LAV filters, switching from the built in ones that ship with Kodi DSPlayer to the latest nightlies solved a few minor issues I was having. I also found UltraMon very useful for forcing apps to open on the right display and saving/loading different display combinations.
Oh man I remember all those hassles. What a pain. Honestly if I had to deal with all that again I would probably just use spdif instead of dual HDMI.

It's too bad this thread never really took off; it would be very helpful imo. Even more so now that madVR has changed a good bit since the 2018 start of this thread.

Anyone wanna help resurrect this thread with some input?

Maybe appeal to mods to merge them?

I upgraded the version of MadVR that I was using. This one utilizes NGU (next generation upscaler). I've also tweaked some things when using Kodi. I now launch MPC-HC externally as the player instead of using DSPlayer. I still use DSPlayer for live TV, which looks great upscaled. Other than the screenshots below, I think I left everything else default.

MadVR version: v0.92.17
Display: Sony 45ES
Video Card: GTX 1080Ti
Instead of posting all the settings, I attached screenshots of the settings. If this is confusing, let me know and I'll follow the above format instead.

If you are watching UHD on that 45es, the latest beta versions of MadVr can really help.

What's does the beta version do compared to the 0.92.17? Also, where can I find it? For some reason, google is failing me.

It does really good tone mapping of HDR if you have a good GPU. The very long thread is here: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-di...projector.html

And latest build is here: http://madshi.net/madVRhdrMeasure113.zip

These are beta builds, and 112 may be safer as I think motion smoothing doesn't work in 113 with tone mapping.

This thread might be helpful to start with: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-ho...-settings.html

Again, this is helpful if you are watching HDR content on a projector.

Awesome, thanks. I'll try out version 112. I edited the URL to get it.

Ok. There are alot of settings under HDR in 112, but the most important is 'display peak luminance.' You can get a quick idea of what the tone mapping is doing if you adjust this to the brightness of your screen/PJ setup. Ideally you can measure it, or you can calculate an estimate based off your screen size/gain and projector output. Most setups are between 80-120 nits from what I've seen, although don't quote me on that.

I took some equations that I saw online and the measured lumens reported for the reference setting on my VPL45ES and came up with 68.4 ft-L for my screen. Does that seem right? If so, what's the best way to convert it to a number that works for MadVR?

Seems like this site might have the answer for me. https://www.unitconverters.net/lumin...ert-to-nit.htm

234 for me if everything has been calculated accurately. I'm sure it's just an estimate at this point.

Any recommendations on the other settings in the 112 beta version?

68 lumens or 234 nits is really high for a projection system. For instance, if you have 1000 lumens shining on a 120" 1.0 gain screen you'll get 80 nits.

I use this calculator but there are others out there I think.

I'm thinking I might have to play it by ear, or play it by eye in this case. I have a rear projection system for my theater and the screen gain is reported to be 1.8. I have no idea if that is accurate. My screen seems to be pretty bright, probably because it's rear projection.

I purchased my rear projection screen material from eBay. I emailed the seller to get the gain. So it's questionable, but as I said, it's bright. I used the numbers from this review of my projector while on reference mode. I know that lamp life plays a factor, so I'm sure mine is not as bright as a new bulb, so that's another questionable value. I'll make the initial changes as a starting point, then watch some HDR content to tweak.

An estimate can be done on the lamp hours. How many are there?

So it's a rear projection screen material? The one in the pictures is grey, I don't know how it can be 1.8 gain although I'm not too familiar with rear projection fabric.
