Windows 10 HDR "Trigger"?

probably a dumb question but...

iirc windows 10 used to "trigger" hdr whenever it detected an hdr signal, i.e. it could be operated in sdr and when an hdr movie was played it would kick into hdr, then return to sdr once the hdr movie was over, is that correct? if so, is there a way to get this behavior with the latest windows builds, or is it now all or nothing? seems that if you want hdr you have to either perpetually run windows in hdr (enable the hdr toggle), or manually turn on hdr whenever an hdr movie is played.

thanks!

As far as I know, it is always that way. There is no such thing as triggers as you described. That's why many ppl use MadVR to automatically trigger it.

hmm, could have sworn i read that permanently toggling windows to hdr was a relatively new thing (within the last year or so), as was the ability to adjust the desktop sdr brightness in hdr settings because of the change, i.e. the ability to always have windows in hdr.

anyway, can you explain how madvr automatically triggers hdr? are you saying that when madvr is used windows doesn't have to be set to hdr (hdr toggled on), that windows can be set to sdr and when an hdr file is played madvr will automatically turn on windows hdr?

if so, what's the madvr setting to accomplish this, hdr passthrough or hdr tonemapping? i've tried both with windows hdr set to off and i can't get madvr to automatically turn on hdr?

thanks!

From what I read, madVR talk to nVidia driver directly to achieve this. Windows didn't offer any API to perform this task to begin with.

so the only way to get madvr to "trigger" hdr when windows hdr is set to off is by using a nvidia card?

It is only useful to have a decent speced nVidia card to use madVR IIRC.

not sure this answers my question? does madvr trigger hdr only when using a nvidia card? and if/when any other gpu is used madvr can't trigger hdr, instead windows needs to be set permanently to hdr? thanks!

the "trigger" is based upon the application properly addressing the windows API. DVDFab player 5 does that. You should keep windows in non-hdr mode and the app should tell windows when to use HDR

interesting... so madvr + mpc, potplayer, etc. won't kick in hdr from a sdr desktop state? but it will only if you have a nvidia card?

i purchased dvdfab5 quite a while back, thought it might work for my needs after demoing it but decided i wasn't thrilled with it after i purchased it and starting using it for a few days, but given your post i blew off the dust, just now fired it up, notified me that there's a new version 6, installed it, and it looks pretty interesting, gonna play around with it tonite, thanks!

ok, just spent some time with dvdfab and i can't get it to "trigger" hdr if windows is in sdr mode, when i play hdr files dvdfab's info screen shows hdr > sdr....i think dvdfab first needs to determine if the os is capable of 10-bit before "auto" kicking in hdr, and when windows is set to sdr it reports 8-bit so dvdfab assumes the capability isn't there, not sure this is the case, just guessing.

if i do turn on hdr in windows before starting dvdfab, then hdr files display beautifully and dvdfab's info screen confirms hdr (instead of hdr > sdr)... but i can get this with potplayer + madvr if i first enable hdr win windows, a beautiful hdr image with hdr files and madvr set to hdr passthrough.

what i'm looking for is the ability to run my system in sdr and only have hdr kick in when i play hdr files, without having to build another htpc that includes an nvidia card.

You must be on a very old Windows 10 build.

Mine works just fine with windows set to sdr. Dvdfab kicks my LG Oled into HDR automatically

first, thank you very much for your helpful responses.... a few questions:

- are you using a discreet video card?
- what do your windows advanced display settings show?

thanks!

I have a discrete nvidia 1060 with 6GB Vram. I'm not at home but will check my settings later. I know that I have hdr games and apps turned off

If you use Windows10 that is connected to an HDR monitor you should have under the Display setting a toggle for 'Use HDR' for on/off.
Some application like PowerDVD will request the device driver to put in HDR mode and want it full screen control, and some other app like VLC does not request anything so you have to toggle it on to view 4K HDR movies.

yes, all of that is very clear, already known, the question is what software (and/or hardware) will automatically turn on hdr from a windows sdr state when an hdr file is played, and automatically turn off hdr when the hdr file stops playing? apparently dvdfab does this but i haven't been able to get it to work, apparently madvr does this too but i haven't been able to get it to work either.

What video card do you have? It is probably very dependent on the video card, e.g. nVidia vs AMD vs Intel. nVidia seems to be more app friendly.

pulled away due to the northern cal fires, what a mess...

anyway, i'm not using a discreet card, i'm using integrated graphics (intel iris plus graphics 655), so the general consensus is auto triggering hdr when using madvr or dvdfab requires a discreet card, or specially a nvidia card? has this been confirmed?

thanks!
