Disable win10 updates with exe?

Someone was recommending an app a while ago that kills win 10 updates. I used it, and now have no idea what it was called and need to restore the ability to update. Anyone know what the app is?

Maybe this? Win_Update_StopSetup.exe. Not sure, I googled it.

I've been googling as well and don't think that was it. Can't seem to find it.

There are registry changes you can make that will stop automatic installs of updates. I suspect that’s what this exe did for you. I would google how to do that and undo what it did.

You can discourage sudden updates in Win 10 by going through Settings and turning on the switch that says Metered Connection.

I know exactly what you are talking about. It was a small program with a unique name. Didn't involve going into settings. Unfortunately, I can't recall the name either.

If you want to stop specific Windows updates (GPU drivers) for example, MS offers this tool https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ling-in-window.

Seems like some people don't read the OP. I've already done it but want to restore the ability.

Yup, the name has nothing to do with the purpose so google has been fruitless.

Well, excuse me. I thought perhaps this was the app you used and could restore its functionality. My bad

DoNotSpy has a similar feature. I disable it once a year to do my updates, plus I don't get the annoying popup which tells me to update Defender as I do when switching to metered connection.

By the way, another tidbit for everyone. Sometimes Windows 10 is stubborn and doesn't give you just the option to "Shutdown." It only gives you "Install Updates and Shutdown."

If you want to bypass that nonsense and Shutdown ONLY...

Hold the Windows button + R and type in "CMD" and press ENTER.

Type in the following in the window: shutdown -s -t 0

Have you checked the WMC Win10 thread at thegreenbutton.tv?

BTW, why did you disable updates for Win10?

I have not looked there. I haven't had the time to need with it since I posted this.

I always kill updates and do them when I want. Don't like the reboots it will do whenever it wants. And I was having trouble RDPing into the machine after every update. Would have to go hard reset the machine.

But with win 10 you can't just shut them off like win 7.

I didn't realize the issue with reboots and RDP sessions being locked out. I just started with Win10 with my latest build last month. Why would RDP be locked out?

I did realize that the updates were forced in Win10 and could not be toggled on or off. I'm wondering, is there an application that can give back this level of control? I know enterprises do it, so why can't we?

I'm not sure why it would do that. The machine was still running fine as Emby was still accessible. But I couldn't login. Weird.

As far as ways to control the updated lol at some of the above posts. There are various options to take control.

You can, just google it. There are three settings in the registry, that’s how corporate enterprises deal with it. Back up those registry keys first.

So it is a matter of changing registry settings to "on or off"? I'll look further but this is good to know. I want some sort of GUI that simplifies rather than a one off *.exe so I don't have to do what @whiteboy714 is doing today! LOL.

I hear that! Yes, there are two keys to add (case sensitive) and another one or two that change a bit to 1 or 2. I can’t remember now.

Yeah I had a gui. I was just dumb and apparently deleted it. Doesn't seem like it was something that was installed but I should do some better digging I suppose.

So is stopupdates10 what I need?

Also, while we're on the subject of Win10, do I need to create a task to update the time so my recordings don't get messed up in Emby or did MicroSoft fix this issue?

Are you referring to your computer's clock? Drifting clocks is a PC issue, not a Microsoft one. There are lots of apps out there that will keep your clock synchronized and accurate.

You should be able to disable or set to manual updates using local group policy as well by running gpedit.msc. If its "home" edition you may have to enable it first.

I used this from above

With one click it re-enabled updates. Going to do them now and then disable again. Thanks @talon95
