Time to upgrade my Asus Xonar D2X. What's significantly better?

I have been using an Asus Xonar D2X soundcard for my HTPC since 2010 which has served me well. I'm using it connected directly to Bryston 4BSST amps and Martin Logan Prodigy and Summit speakers (with Descent sub) and it sounds great, night and day compared to the Pioneer receiver I was using before. The detail is truly amazing compared to a mid/high-range external audio receiver (at least back in the day).

But it's been nearly 10 years and I'd like to know if there's anything significantly better for a reasonable price (<$1000). I know the Essence STX ii is supposed to be better but probably not by a huge amount.

My requirements:

4.1/5.1 support (which rules out a lot of nice DACs).
Audio input

Any recommendations?

The exaSound e38 Mark II

https://www.exasound.com/Products/e3...hannelDAC.aspx

I'm sorry. I read reasonable and < $10,000

There is a less expensive multichannel DAC but it limits output to 192khz pcm.

Thanks mlknez.

The Exasound is way over budget. Minidsp looks interesting. But it seems like a rather budget device, not sure if it will perform better than the D2X. Will look into it.

Edit:

Seems like audio performance of the UDAC8 is very poor, more of a device purely for function rather than quality.

Here is one that is meant for the consumer market, but it is brand new.

Thanks for the recommendations.

Is there a PC sound card that I can just replace my D2X with that will provide much better audio quality?
