GitHub PlexExternalPlayer (Kayomani) - Is Anyone Using It?

love the idea of being able to have plex launch an external player (specifically a madvr power player), and came across the following github offering that claims to be able to do it using plex’s web browser app:

https://github.com/Kayomani/PlexExternalPlayer

per the instructions, i was able to easily add the tampermonley add-on to my browser, and once completed i was able to easily load the greasyfork script into the tampermonkey add-on… but that’s as far as i was able to get, i wasn’t able to complete step 3 “Install the agent using the installer from the releases page above.”.

has anyone here tried this mod? gotten it to work? does it even still work (given its age)? i posted this at the plex forum but haven't received a response despite many views

Maybe you can be more specific with your issue? "I wasn't able to cmoplete step 3" doesn't begin to explain the problem.

Video: JVC RS4500 135" ST130 G4 screen in batcave, htpc nvidia 1080ti madVR.
Audio: Anthem mrx720 running 7.1.4, McIntosh MC-303, MC-152, B&W 802d3 LR, B&W HTM1D3 center, B&W 805d3 surround, B&W 702S2 rear, B&W 706s2 x 4 shelf mounted for atmos, Infinite Baffle Subs 4x15 fi audio running on behringer ep4000 + 2x12 fi audio mounted in main chair firing into back.

thanks for the reply @markmon1 ...

1-Install Chrome or Firefox
2-Install TamperMonkey (Chrome) or TamperMonkey (Firefox).
3-Install the agent using the installer from the releases page above. Requires .Net 4.5 on Windows.
4-Install the script from github or GreasyFork
5-Refresh any existing plex pages you have open.

----------------------------------

i downloaded the zip, which included the "agent" folder, but i don't know how to install anything from the downloaded, there doesn't appear to be any executable or bat files in the package, and i don't recognize anything that would install with a command line.

have you tried this mod before? if so, what did you think?

It looks like you have to go to the releases page to get the installer.

you are exactly right, not sure how i missed that, found it and it installed on my system just fine.... unfortunately it doesn't seem to want to work, the agent is running in my task tray, the greasemonkey script shows as installed and enabled in the tampermonkey dashboard, but the play icon it's supposed to add to plex's web browser isn't there, and tampermonkey reports that the script isn't running (altho i'm guessing it will only show as running if a movie is playing using the script).

someone at the plex forum responded to my post to say thatthe mod is dead, but didn't say whether or not is still worked, it hasn't been touch in 3+ years, so it does seem to be dead, but that doesn't necessarily mean it no longer works.

anyway the same poster mentioned that a new mod is now being used for plex external player ability, the "plex mpv shim", but reading the github description the mod seems to be for mpv based players only, i.e. no madvar, which makes the mod useless to me given the reason i want to use an external player with plex is to be able to use madvr.

i dunno, maybe i'll revisit kodi/plex, have tried it several times in the past and didn't like it, thought the interface was clunky and didn't like the gui (even tho some think the gui looks idetical to plex).
