If your HTPC is bored or idling...

Can't hurt and might even do some good...

We show you how you can setup [email protected], a distributed computation project that allows you to donate your computer's processing power to help model protein dynamics to combat diseases like Parkinsons, Cancer, Huntingtons, and most importantly, COVID-19.

If one is attempting to get this to work with Ubuntu 20.04 (or other most new/unsupported versions of Linux OS) this link will come in handy...

Basically the install falls if you select not to autostart at boot (update-rc.d: error: no runlevel symlinks to modify, aborting!) and the following will resolve the issue... sudo update-rc.d FAHClient defaults

At this point you can start it up (in any directory) with FAHClient in a Terminal. Once running you can access most functions via your browser using http://127.0.0.1:7396/ since the Control and Viewer apps aren't supported in newer releases as well... another long story.

UPDATE: Installed it on another Ubuntu 20.04 release (virtually identical version) and it installed without issue.

I remember, before I retired, we had all the desktop and instrument computers in my labs running [email protected] for years; processing radio telescope data and looking for ET.
Protein folding was done on the super-computer clusters.

SETI is out of Berkeley. It is not clear to me who is running this protein show. It doesn't look like it is University sponsored.

A number of research labs are involved in running and enhancing FAH.

University of Washington's [email protected] is doing COVID-19 research. They are on the same BOINC platform as [email protected]
