Lightbulb Long HDMI: Argument Against or Good Budgeting for HTPCs

Guys, I am building a main home PC now and I'm planning for a future HTPC too near my TV, and I'm thinking why have an ITX HTPC when you can run a long HDMI cable from your main PC to your TV's receiver? Control through wireless keyboard/trackpad.

Has anyone realised this or is there a fundamental flaw?

If your needs are only 1080p and not 4K this might be ok. But I'd assume you're going to want 4K, in which case you'll need a fiber optic cable. The longer the run, the more flaky the HDMI will be. Also, how far is the PC for the keyboard / mouse? I'd recommend a Logitech K400, but of course performance depends on range.

Hey, thanks for replying!

Fibre optic, I understand. If my PC is in another room and I am using a fibre optic cable, how do I transmit sound to my TV's receiver?

If my PC has a GPU with HDMI and display port connections, which connections should my fibre optic cable have?

Thanks!

Fiber optic HDMI cables. They exist, and are $$$$, but are unidirectional so make sure you connect it the right way.

They are also required if your cable is more than 50' in length. Don't be surprised if you're paying $200 or more for 100'.

I'm not sure that 50m cable would even work at 1080p. Flaky at best since HDMI is only spec'ed to about 15m or so (50').

If you want a 50m fiber optic HDMI cable good for 4k, you're going to be shelling out $3-400 for it.

100 feet is $74.99: https://www.amazon.com/ATZEBE-Optica.../dp/B07KG71K8K

I need to read if the signal will be stable or what the limitations are.

$275 for the latest ultra high speed cable with eARC at 100 feet: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=38629

What do you need eARC for on an HDMI cable between an HTPC and AVR??

Long HDMI runs are well established as unreliable so it's up to you if you want to experiment with your money as you can't always trust the manufactures claims. Second most wireless keyboards are Bluetooth and can be problematic even at their claimed range of about 30' max. Most of us use a streamer like a FireTV, Roku, ATV or Shield as a front end using Plex, KODI or any other software to stream from your main PC.

Check out the tivo 4k stream, its only $50 till 5/27. Or if you need atmos audio (currently not working on the tivo) get an nvidia shield. This would be a much better experience than controlling a PC from another room, assuming your network can handle whatever you are trying to stream.
