Hinged door cubby?

I'm looking to set up a recessed box on the indoor lower helm console of my boat. I'm looking for something like an Extron or Crestron conference table cubby, but smaller.

https://www.extron.com/product/cablecubby202

Crestron's FT2-202 is closer, but has a HUGE box behind the panel. I don't need all that.

https://www.crestron.com/Products/In...FT2-202-MECH-B

I'm basically looking to recess some keystone sockets but still have a cut-out on the door for cables. Something around the size of a single gang wall plate, with a Decora-sized area inside.

Mockett makes some nice grommets but they're also a bit large.

The point is to have an on-console location to plug in USB cord for a phone cradle and have some other sockets that are cross-connected to other installed gear. Basically, something that'd hold a single-gang Decora keystone frame would be great. That'd let me plug-in my own keystones and inter-connect them to the appropriate devices inside. USB, Ethernet, an NMEA-2000 bus, etc.

Any suggestions?

I can only google, no special knowledge. Some search terms to consider - flush, recessed, "panel-mount", "chassis-mount", marine, cover

I looked into recessed boxes for our kitchen remodel, and wife wouldn't go for it. Too ugly. We went with a dedicated cabinet for charging, with a Middle Atlantic power strip. And, used under-cabinet angled outlet strips for convenient power, like this -

Recessed boxes are also incredibly expensive, even wholesale.

In a salt water marine environment, I doubt any box will last more than a few seasons, even if 'marine grade'. Make sure it's easy to service (i.e. replace).

Fun project. Might be easiest to go with 4+ dedicated connections, something more water resistant than a recessed table top or wall box. Something with snap or screw covers.

Edit - more connectors https://www.google.com/search?q=mari...=1920&bih=1057

Stage floor box is another search term I happened to run across.

I'm specifically looking to avoid using those ugly-ass round cigarette style sockets for this application.

This particular install is for an inside location, not outdoor. You're correct that an outdoor marine environment would be problematic.

That's a clever use of the undercabinet area for that. I've seen other solutions like that. Before we built the new house I went to the KBIS show to gawk at all the fancy new ways to outfit a kitchen and bath.

One thing that's proved useful is scouring eBay for these items and then using the Internet Archive to find past info. A lot of vendors tanked back during the recession of 2008, or dramatically changed their product offerings. One eBay listing shows an interesting box, but has the vendor name wrong. That was from an integrator, whose website is now gone. The Internet Archive has their site cached and the listing back in 2008 shows vendors they carried. Those, in turn, also no longer have the same items for sale, but their pages back in 2008 show them. So a little digging goes a long way toward finding more background info on finding a solution. I'm still not there... but getting closer...

Here's the example:

The eBay listing:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Recessed-Me...3/232288873597

Says "Crown Magnetics" but their site isn't working. No worries, hit up the Internet Archive and pull up past pages, one of which has their product listings:
http://web.archive.org/web/200702051...om/catalog.htm

And that has a catalog page PDF:
http://web.archive.org/web/200702051...iles/57-60.pdf

Bingo! The box was made by Avlex. But their current website doesn't show anything like that anymore. No worries, back to the Archive:

http://web.archive.org/web/200702020..._products.html

Ah, a click on their floor box link brings up a cached PDF:
http://web.archive.org/web/200702020.../AJ_Series.pdf

Which isn't really solution I'm looking to find, but thought it might help to share the process, for others looking for similar stuff or from vendors no longer carrying stuff.

Of course it'd figure the sized cubby I'd like to find has been discontinued by the vendor. ebay to the rescue.

You know the dangerous part of thinking about stuff like this? Cascading upgrades to other things. Because if I get this, and move that, then upgrade this other thing... "while I'm at it"...

If my wallet had legs it would start running...
