Cheating the Calibration

A couple of the receivers I own, or have owned, when calibrated, do not bring sufficient volume to the center channel for the ancient ears I possess (mid 80's). they do not have a channel-specific adjustment for volume. So I have difficulty with some programming catching the dialog. I have been successful in "Cheating the System" by placing a kitchen dish towel over the center channel speaker during calibration, then, of course removing it during play.

Yes, it likely shifts some of the playback frequencies, but upward, I think.

Not proud of it - but it works.

Never heard of a receiver that didn’t have a user-adjustable center-channel volume, but I must admit that is a cleaver idea!

Hope I'm still rockin' the home theater when I'm your age!

I wonder if you could splice something in line to reduce the load to 8ohm, to make the speaker quieter during testing without changing the frequency response. Maybe another speaker you place facing the floor.
