If Oppo were smart, they'd treat their UHD Bluray players as pre-pros, and have 11.2 Atmos / DTS:X pre-outs. Then you're cooking with gas.

Waiting on Oppo also. They mentioned mid to late 2016 for something new from them last time that I contacted them.

Those 6 titles are not a very confident step forward!! Loser titles for sure!

Goodbye to a great audio and video genius and writer... JOHN GANNON. I enjoyed your friendship, wit and a nice long run we took around Indianapolis at CEDIA years back... and for buying my Runco 980 Ultra years back... you saved my ass! Rest in peace.

And with Dirac Live. ...And make that 9.1.6 (sixteen equalized channels by DL); with Unbalanced RCA and Balanced XLR connections.

________

♦ Question: If anyone here was a top executive @ Sony/Tri Star/Columbia Pictures from Hollywood movie studios for the Blu-ray transfer department;
what would have been the first six UHD Blu-ray movie titles you would have picked?

And two: Do you think that newer recent digital films stand a better chance to look terrific on UHD Blu-ray than older films from analog technology?

He mentions in the video that the PS4 has 4k output, but it doesn't support 4k gaming, whatever that means exactly. Didn't hear any mention of UHD disc.

Jeff Rigby posted this over on Bluray.com under the PS4 section
I'm kinda guessing that the PS4 Firmware 4.0 mentioned in the Survey leaked to Neogaf is going to be about Media. When though? CES is Jan 6-9 and Media features are also CE features but major Firmware updates are generally around March and October.

The PS3 & Vita are loosing facebook support Jan 2016 which likely signals a major firmware update only because they announced the change months in advance and Playready & Vidipath support are overdue. The PS4 may get the same support at the same time. With Playready and HTML5 <video> MSE in the PS4 and PS3, new WebMAF apps should be released for all. To this point the PS3 Netflix app has self contained player and DRM and hasn't changed significantly since 2012. The current PS4 Netflix app is 1.1 GB (should drop in size significantly) and is also self contained (not using the PS4 software stack).

Netflix can not support UHD unless it is using a Playready porting kit 3 or higher (PS4 and XB1). Self contained Playready is 2.0 and the PS3 I think will be 2.5 except for the HDMI port. The XB1 has 10 bit HEVC support so it can stream Netflix UHD and I think the same is true for the PS4 as in 2013 Sony said the PS4 would support 4K media at some point in the future after Microsoft said the XB1 would support 4K media and UHD Blu-ray.

Maybe with embedded Playready support we will get an embedded version of DLNA with DRM rather than the current temporary DLNA/player.

Maybe we will see more about this at CES

Yeah that would be great but if it had about 7 HDMI ins, otherwise I would still need a processor.

HDMI splitters / switches are much cheaper than AVRs though, so even 1 HDMI 2.0a input would be good enough IMO. (although 2 would be better).

I didn't get to see The Martian so I'm looking forward to that. I've put my fam / g/f on notice not to buy any more regular res Blurays for me anymore.

Actually the cover design does not look unlike the old HD DVD covers.

Hope that is not a sign of what is to come...

PS4 can barely game at 1080p/60FPS in modern games, lol. Most games on PS4 (and Xbone) have to be toned down in settings (by the programmers) in order to play well on them. By well I mean at framerates closer to 60FPS which is usually more like 45FPS on consoles.

Consider that a PS4 (which has the most powerful GPU of the consoles right now) has a GPU that's slightly less powerful than an HD 7870 (or R9 270/270X). A $700 GTX 980 Ti (one of the most powerful GPUs on the market today) can barely handle cutting edge games at 4K itself (some people have two in SLI at insane cost!). Anyway 980 Ti is probably about 4x more powerful than an R9 270X, if that puts it in perspective.

In other words, there's no way a PS4 is gaming [well] at 4K; at least not with current games it's not.

The PS4 will do 4K video, there is no chance of it doing 4K gaming. It's going to be a long time before we see 4K gaming on any console.

Yep, they mentioned the same to me with the added comment about major advances over their current models :-) Though after that I scored a good deal on a 93 for my bedroom system - got that instead as I won't be doing any major upgrades for the AVR/TV of that system.

Is there even a need for 4K gaming yet? There is still a Long way to go with current consoles before they consider new hardware surely?

People have been doing 4K gaming on PCs for a while now. It's one of the driving forces behind high-end graphics cards.

Protip: the people who care about this stuff aren't console peasants. Console peasantry is wholly irrelevant to high-end gaming.

I've been PC gaming at 4K resolution for over a year now. PC gaming is the primary source of 4K content and has been for years.

May I ask what setup you have for 4k gaming on PC?
