where did you get your bulb may I ask?

there are threads about this, but I keep reading horror stories; sounds like you found a source that worked well.

I got mine from alibaba, likely similar sources as everyone else. No issue with it except at the start it was so bright the projector was overheating like crazy and I had to clean up the dust inside to avoid it shutting down after 5 minutes. But that's not the lamp's fault.

I'm very interested in laser or a led based projector. My Wife will end up sleeping while infomercials play all night. However for the under 3k crowd this seems like the only benefit.

I think the answer is still the same as its always been. Buy a flat panel if you don't want to deal with this stuff. We may end up with a oled tv instead of another projector.

Is LG planning a (ultra) short throw version of the HF80J? Does anybody know?

Yes, there seems to always be some kind of compromise. I've been using projectors since 2005, don't plan on going back. I've only purchased flat panels for computers and gaming. The bang for the buck is just to good to pass up on these budget projectors.

Interesting you say that. If you see my prior posts, you will find that I am trying to buy a used high end 1080p projector. Summary of my recent "quick and dirty" evaluation of Sony 360 4k, JVC x550 4k eshift, epson 4040 4k, Sony 2k, my qualia 004 2k, Benq 2050 2k..
The 4k projectors were superior with true 4k sources.
For dish 2k sources, the 4k projectors were actually INFERIOR. This is just my personal opinion. With dish 2k, the 4k projectors showed a lot of scaling noise, video noise, some posterization and over all annoyance. At least one owner of Sony 5000 laser 4k ($60k projector) saw the same thing that I saw. Of course, many others, including most experts, are very pleased with 4k projectors. I am no expert and am probably missing something..

1080 is fine. There's not enough material or advantages to spend big bucks for a 4 k projector right now

1 reference price of 1500$, it's cheaper than on eBay. The Korean sellers prices are always more expensive than US sellers. Need to wait when there will be a projector in the United States. In any case, lower prices will be in the summer or fall.

Less is more? Uhh, no, less features is less, especially if it's just a difference between firmware.

Personally, I don't care about 3d. However, I am totally fine with (in no particular order):

LED or laser
HDR
DLP
1080p
8,000:1 or better measured CR
$1500 - $1900 or less

I suspect I'll remain disappointed a while longer.

Anyone have experience with laser projectors? How's the color gamut compare to a standard projector?

Esegan,

In what ways is it better? Focusing ability with better quality lens? More accurate color? Brighter? Better contrast?

Yeah, 80 on the basic parameters of better than 1500. 80 best sharpness, but it's no secret we all write about it. 80 brighter, better, more correct blue color, not there is a touch of red as 1500. As 80 better diagonal lines, less the effect of a saw (stairs). Better calibration capabilities for color transmission. 80 is not offset color 20 tochechnye with a strong change in 2 tochechnye some color. Appeared adjustment (gamma) for 20 points as the Panasonic plasmas, very convenient. Same in US models there are many languages, probably more than 50 languages, which will please people from other countries.

I was really interested in this projector. I had an LG PW800 before, which was almost perfect for me. Except for two really annoying problems.
1. The high-pitched squeaky noise of the fans.
2. Issues with sharpness. It was not possible to get the picture sharp enough in the center or in the corners.

The issue with the sharpness was so irritating to me, that I had to sell it. This was last year. I thought that it is a really cheap projector, it had issues, let's buy a more expensive one.

Since then, I am on the mission to find a replacement. I would like to buy a better LED or Laser-based projector, but it seems all LG models are suffering from the same issues with sharpness, no matter how expensive they are.

I had high hopes for HF80ja, but after I've read the Russian forum linked above, it seems this projector also has the same problems with the lens.

I am really disappointed.

Are all HF80jas affected? Or can you get lucky and find one which can deliver an evenly sharp picture?

Or is there an LED/Laser projector out there, that doesn't have this problem? (I heard XGIMI is the same.)

Might be interesting for future buyers:
I've contacted LG and asked about HF80 and sharpness. They replied really quickly and confirmed that it not possible to get all four corners sharp. They said that HF80 has the same problems as other LG projectors have.

Mark,

We have yet to see a real professional review of the 4K LG. Anxious to see your always complete analysis.

I just laugh when I see people saying they want things to be clear so they want 4K but then insist on turning FI off and watching at 24 fps. It's really quite absurd. Motion blur trails make the difference between 4K and even 720p nil, as soon as stuff's in motion: namely foreground objects like people who are moving, or action scenes.
