Not so easy to get legal rights to deliver IMAX versions on home video. If it was just a matter of transferring the IMAX masters to 4K disc, then all it should take is flipping a switch (as you said). But so far only 2 studios have given legal permission: Sony and Paramount. And so far only Sony has released titles (that too, only via streaming). I guess studios have to consider which movies to release as IMAX Enhanced, since those discs will be competing against their own non-IMAX versions on home video. Wish that getting studio cooperation was as easy as flipping a switch.
Don't you think they should have secured some studio support before they launched the format?

They did (Sony & Paramount), just not enough.

This has planned obsolescence written all over it.

I just checked Fandango on my X900 and there is an IMAX Enhanced section with 11 Sony movies.

Spider-Man: Far From Home
MIB3
Venom
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
Chappie
Pixels
Inferno
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter
Life
Alpha

If you search for "IMAX Enhanced" you'll also see:

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Only the Brave
Ghostbusters (2016)

along with some other movies that aren't actually IMAX Enhanced.

I'm wondering if these have all been formatted for full-screen 16:9.

Should vary by movie. For example, the theatrical IMAX versions of two of the Spider-Man movies (Homecoming & Spiderverse) kept their 2.39 aspect ratio while Far From Home opened up to 1.9 for selected sequences. Guessing the IMAX Enhanced home video releases will be faithful to the theatrical IMAX versions.

Don't feel bad .. no one does. This is a badge assigned by IMAX and partners that is supposed to insure that you get as close to the original IMAX experience as possible ... In terms of picture quality and color.(and sound) IMAX enhanced equipment ensures that the extended ratios and color assignments are accurate.

Sort of a new THX standard but with IMAX material as a baseline source and comparison.

I'm.waiting for more info too ... I just purchased a surround processor that is IMAX enhanced ... Although for me that was a lucky addition ... Not a purchasing influence.

Some more titles on Fandango:

The Angry Birds Movie 2
The Walk
The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Note that you actually have to search for these since they don't show up in the Imax Enhanced category. There are also a few Imax documentaries that aren't actually "Imax Enhanced".

Watching IMAX enhanced on O-led

I spotted a 4K blu ray on amazon with the IMAX enhanced logo and just come to know that my oled is IMAX enhanced capable.

q1. What about the 4k blu ray player playing the IMAX enhanced blu ray, does it also need to support IMAX enhanced or will any 4K blu ray player with HDR capabilty be able to play an IMAX enhanced disc?

q2. Is IMAX enhanced going to be a separate encode on the disc which I'll need to select from the top menu or will IMAX enhanced be embedded into the normal HEVC/HDR encode of the disc? When the disc start playing, how can I check whether I'm getting IMAX enhanced on my tv or not?

A1 - the disc is just sending what's on the disc, it has no idea whether it's IMAX or not because the IMAX audio/video is packaged in standard containers (DTS:X for audio and HDR10 for video)
A2 - there is not a separate "IMAX Enhanced" video stream. The HDR video on the disc IS the IMAX Enhanced version, it just means it was regraded to their standards, there is nothing proprietary about it. On the video side all that's happening is the TV is engaging a specific picture mode preset that's "IMAX approved", just like a THX picture mode available on certain displays.

So the IMAX Enhanced Blu-rays use HDR10+. But aren't the only IMAX Enhanced displays from Sony right now? They don't support HDR10+ so there isn't even a way to fully experience this format yet.

Does Imax enhanced allow for use of all 4096 x 2160 pixels on Sony SXRD panels vs using only 3840 x 2160 pixels?

No. IMAX Enhanced media does nothing special and nothing new. It offers no technical enhancements beyond the BDA disc and UHD TV specs.

The only thing is that they use masters prepared for their large projection systems, which can mean switching aspect ratios and heavier uses of digital noise reduction and edge enhancement (added edge noise to create the illusion of sharpened detail on lower resolution sources).

On the audio side, their 12 channel fixed theatrical mixes are encoded as fixed 11.1 DTS: X.

One small correction: Audio on the IMAX Enhanced discs is encoded with a proprietary version of DTS:X. The majority of A/V receivers will decode it as standard DTS:X (or DTS-HD Master Audio if the AVR is not capable of DTS:X), but newer receivers that are certified as IMAX Enhanced will decode extra metadata and apply a special IMAX DSP mode that boosts the bass and overrides your speaker crossover settings. That DSP mode can only be activated on discs with this metadata.

Sure, but the underlying tech is no different from normal disc or broadcast specs.

The blanket audio system calibration override could also be seen as a negative aspect of the IMAX Enhanced program. It does not take into consideration a particular home system's capabilities.

They (IMAX and Xperi) want you to purchase IMAX licensed gear (electronics, amps, and speakers/subs).

It's different in that it has proprietary metadata that non-IMAX Enhanced discs do not.

Agreed. The bass boost is also kind of obnoxious. I do not like the IMAX DSP mode and have turned it off.
