Wow! That is an awesome area! The JTR's have to be sick!

Great looking room! Am I correct in assuming another S2 would fit perfectly to the left of your center channel? biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Lke you read my mind bro smile.gif Start with an S2 and if I need/want another, I have the space for it. Literally had the contractor build it specifically with that in mind.

Amazing......what an upgrade. This is a serious room with some serious gear! Congrats.

I think you need a 2nd S2 to balance it out biggrin.gif

My wife got some of the moving budget and spent it at Pottery Barn. Need to refuel the cash tanks wink.gif

carp 12-14-2012 10:31 AM

I didn't know JTR made in-wall speakers!! wink.gifsmile.gif

Seriously, I love the way you setup your surround 888's. I've wondered if I would ever upgrade to larger surrounds but I don't want to take up so much space, you've solved that problem.

Yeah, I didn't know how to mount 75lbs surround speakers so I had the contractor build those boxes and lay them into the wall so they mounted flush. I do have good ideas once in a while biggrin.gif

Really, really great room Frohlich !!!
congrats.

capricorn kid 12-14-2012 09:53 PM

It is a must for you to balance the front stage out.....you NEED to get some balance with another JTR S2 in the left space. How can you sleep at night knowing you have a HUGE gap in the front. eek.gif
Excellent space !!!

pcweber111 12-14-2012 10:18 PM

Personally I think she did good. That's a pretty cool sink and I like the island. You have almost the same table as me too.

This is what I love about AVS. When I show my friends my HT they think it is overkill...when I show it to AVS members they think I need more speakers....I fit in here better smile.gif

This is my first projector so I am a little bit of a newbie in this area. I will say that color, motion, sharpness,etc... are all excellent and I am a pretty critical viewer. The only small complaint I would have are black levels but this is likely because my last TV was a 65 Panasonic VT series plasma and their black levels are approaching KURO levels. That is a small price to pay for an image that is 4 times larger with excellent clarity and color . I am also a gamer and the lag time on the Sony is suppose to be best in class and have had not complaints to date with lag. Play a good blu ray disk and the image is truly stunning. smile.gif

Please keep in mind that is reflective of all projectors (compared to the best flat panel tvs like Panasonic VT and the old KURO). The JVC and Sony projectors are the best of the bunch this year according most reviews for black levels. So my critique isn't saying the Sony has bad black levels...just that projectors can't compete with the best Plasmas for black levels. The picture is honestly stunning to me and if it wasn't for the black bars on movies (i.e. just looking at content within the picture) the black levels and shadow detail are very good.

mmmh, I find it strange that nobody mentioned this yet, but you seem to be missing a S2?

Great setup. Like the sunk in surrounds. I'm assuming that the speaker pedestals are customs and so is the component rack. Very well done. It's sort of what I'm envisioning for when we move...I've already showned my wife. SHE'S the one who pointed out the "empty space" tongue.gif

cheers

Going to start a new thread about "stolen subwoofer - please help me raise cash for a new one" eek.gifsmile.gif

Yes, the speaker pedestals, speaker boxes for surrounds and component rack were all built by my contractor that finished the basement. We would shoot ideas back and forth and then settle on one we both though would work.

Frohlich,

From another 'Nati resident and Buckeye fan and alumni, just wanted to commend you on your theater and decorating style! Nice kitchen as well. Love the JTR setup and may have to hit you up to take a listen when I decide to upgrade.

Where in Cincinnati do you live now, if you don't mind me asking?

Any Buckeye alumni is welcome in my house anytime smile.gif I live in Kenwood somewhat close to the mall. When the time comes just let me know.

tbraden32 12-18-2012 04:39 PM

Just noticed the kitchen myself, love the two tone with the island standing out!

When you purchased the JTRs, did they spec the center for Triple8 for a reason instead if another matching Triple12 or was it for another reason?

I picked the triple 8 for center because of size. If I picked another triple 12 for center I could never fit a second S2 sub with the dimensions of my room . At some future point my second S2 will go between my left channel and center channel and mirror my existing sub on the right side.

You "halved" the distortion at a given level by doing that. Plus that you even out the room response by adding more pointsources. You'll quite easily notice the improvement.

Now ... about those two in the rear.... ?

4 S2's would likely destroy the wife's "woman-cave," creating a fault line right through the kitchen floors and shattering all valuables therein. You'd be paying the "honeyyyyy, what the..." price for a long time!

Its funny you mention that. Yesterday my kids and nephews were in the basement playing Black Ops and we were in the kitchen and you could feel plenty of vibration coming through the floor. Two might start breaking stuff in there wink.gif

I honestly don't know why I am getting a second sub outside of being addicted to this crazy hobby. The one S2 puts out a ton of clean bass and I have the dial around 25% of volume. On the flip side I am anal about the current empty spot and if I don't get another sub it will drive me insane ... more insane than I already am smile.gif

I have 4 subs for the same reason. The original two were is diagonal corners and the lack of symmetry was killing me. Being anal cost a lot of money!

I didn't realize there were so many Cincinnati residents on this great forum. Nice to see. I too am a JTR Speakers owner. I am fortunate to have both a Women Cave and a Women HT. But, I love Frohlich' kitchen island. Now, I just need a solution for dual subs to replace my SVS cylinder sub located in the corner, just not much room for them in my set up as you can see below.

Sorry guys, yes those are Q8s and Jeff built a custom T8 for my center channel so that it would fit into the space. Jeff was great about allowing me to return the S8 I purchased as a center channel and building one to fit my space.

Now I am looking to upgrade my SVS cylinder sub to dual subs, but I do not have much room and this is my main living room, so I have to be aware of esthetics. There is only 18" from the rear of the Q8s to the back wall, and even less space from the rear of the A/V stand to the wall. As far as considering in-wall subs, the wall behind the A/V unit is your typical 4" wall, and the other side of the wall is a finished wall that leads to the lower level. I know there are a lot of fans of the Submersive and other large subs, but they just won't work in my space.

I know I could have my home theater in the lower level, which is totally finished and very large. But, I know I wouldn't go down there to enjoy it on a daily basis, so it is the party room with a pool table, bar, and all my replaced A/V equipment.

Another challenge I have are the acoustics in my main floor, I didn't think about that when sitting down with the architect, wanting those 14' tall ceilings and no walls between the living room, dining room, kitchen, and breakfast room.

Up for suggestions of options for subs that would nicely complement the JTRs. Thanks!

Up for suggestions of options for subs that would nicely complement the JTRs. Thanks!

Yeah, finding a small compact sub is going to be hard. I know SVS has a new sealed sub that you could consider but even that might be too big for your space. All the stuff from JTR and Seaton have pretty big footprints. I have the JTR S2 (similar to Seaton F2) that you could perhaps stand on end (tall like a speaker...mine is horizontal on the foor). Would that work?

Now I am looking to upgrade my SVS cylinder sub to dual subs, but I do not have much room and this is my main living room, so I have to be aware of esthetics. There is only 18" from the rear of the Q8s to the back wall, and even less space from the rear of the A/V stand to the wall. As far as considering in-wall subs, the wall behind the A/V unit is your typical 4" wall, and the other side of the wall is a finished wall that leads to the lower level. I know there are a lot of fans of the Submersive and other large subs, but they just won't work in my space.

Hi Kathy, i think a Seaton Submersive F2 or JTR S2 take up about as much floor space as your current svs....they are not very deep. If you look at my avatar, you can get an idea of the F2's real-world size...plus, with the finish options, it should be able to blend well with that room as furniture. (Get the rosenut or walnut finishes).

Nightlord 01-14-2013 04:15 AM

No possibility to consider other form factors? After all (within reason) it's the internal volume that's needed rather than a particular shape. So building a box shape that suits the room better with the same volume and moving the element/electronics could perhaps be an option? Not so deep, but high (or wide) ?

Well after several delays from BMS delivering new 18 inch drivers to Jeff, they finally arrived today. Jeff said my second S2 ships out tomorrow and should be here by Friday...just in time for the weekend smile.gif

LOVE those big speakers. JTR? Never heard of them but just looked them up - WOW. Not like you (or anybody) needs it, but I'd love to see & hear you do a triple 12 for the center and throw in another double 18 sub on the other side! :O

I know that NAD brick you have is a monster, but looking at your speaker specs have you ever considered juicing them up even more? (again, as if its needed but just wondering).

Dude the next time I blast my system and sit back to take in the sound/impact, I think a vision of your sound stage is going to flash before my eyes prompting me to wonder: how the hell must THAT system sound like!?!? Wicked setup.

You must not have read the post read above yours..another S2 (double 18 driver sub) is coming tomorrow. So that empty space you see should be filled with more BOOM BOOM smile.gif

JTR speakers are actually very sensitive speakers and will reach reference level on almost no watts ...can't remember the number but it is less than 20 watts. While getting new toys like an amp is always fun for people like us with HT addictions, with these speakers it honestly is not needed. They are so easy to drive. I think the Triple 12s are 101db sensitivity.

tezster 01-31-2013 09:46 AM

In truth, I think your wife should appreciate the second S2 as much as you do - it makes the layout of the front sound stage symmetrical, thereby making it much more aesthetically pleasing to look at. The interior decorator part of her brain should approve.

That's funny but its so bloody true! My wife is self proclaimed/self aware borderline OCD when it comes to symmetry. She could care less about the sound and bitch non stop about the cost, yet an empty space like that on the left would gnaw away at her more than anything.

Frohlich I have yet to fully understand sensitivity and stuff like anechoic chamber, etc. Quickly looking at your speaker specs online I figured a 4 ohm speaker required TWICE the power of an 8 ohm speaker to drive, plus I thought I read online that these things could handle like 1600 watts? (?). Either way based on what you said about the speakers, that NAD amp sounds like its more than enough.

EDIT - and my wife is very pleased you pulled the trigger on another dual 18 for the left side :P

Frohlich 01-31-2013 10:33 AM

My wife was an angel and said I could do what I wanted in the new house...within reason of course. The empty space bothered me a lot more than it did her...since I spend way more time down in the man cave than she does. She is perfectly happy watching the 55 inch plasma above the fire place upstairs while I hang it in the basement and defend the neighborhood from snipers playing Black Ops or watching a blu ray. Matter of fact since this room was finished, I have probably watched more movies in the last month than I ever have (per day average). I have probably averaged almost 1 movie a day over the last month....though that is because I often watch 2 or even 3 on a weekend day. I am an early bird so I can get up at 7 AM on a Saturday morning and finish a movie before anybody else is even awake. And the way the house is laid out, you can barely hear the sound upstairs...even when I am cranking it pretty good.

Alright, my second S2 arrived this morning and is in place. I am done now for a while...that is my story and I am sticking to it smile.gif

VERY IMPRESSIVE....

Definitely makes things look more "complete" up front. wink.gif

Nightlord 02-01-2013 10:53 AM

Yes! Now we're talking. That'll do wonders to smoothing out mode excitation and cut the dist by a fair bit. It should be noticable well beyond risks of placebo. Might even make it more silent outside the theater at the same volume levels too!

BornSlippyZ 02-01-2013 01:02 PM

Very nice!

I ran out of room so I suppose I can't buy any more speakers wink.gif

I don't think it sounded too silent when I watched Terminator Salvation...forgot how much bass was in that soundtrack tongue.gif

Thanks. Just went through an upgrade cycle so time to stop for a while.

Love the setup... That's a mean looking front end!

There's a simple, aesthetic beauty in the use of symmetry. That second S2 makes this setup far more than the sum of its parts, visually. Performance-wise, I'm sure its already been more than the sum of its parts for quite some time. smile.gif

I agree about symmetry. The empty space the second S2 filled was driving me crazy eek.gifwink.gif

I completely agree about the symmetry. I got my first SUB12 today, and I'm already thinking I need another to go on the left-hand side of the TV. I like balance, or maybe it's just a little OCD in me.

Very nice setup by the way. Looks good.

I don't know why you think you're done.. You do not have Height and Wide Channels speakers.. So your theater is still incomplete.

Oh, way to wave alcohol in front of an alcoholic tongue.gif

I actually had wides in my previous set-up (room) and while they were fine, they weren’t that impactful in my opinion. I actually had turned them off one weekend to see if I liked it more or less and all I can say is it was different (turning off the wides). Almost seemed like the soundfiled became more focused again….in a good way. So when I built this room I could have easily wired for heights, for example, but chose not to. Just went with the traditional 7.1 set-up.

If I had to list out some things I would consider buying in the next 12-24 months they would be
1)new pre-pro like AV8801 with XT32 but I think HDMI 2.0 is right around the corner so I will likely wait a while
2)the JTR Noesis..not because I don’t love my current set-up…but because they are the new shinny toy from JTR. Again, I am in no hurry whatsoever and am very happy with my new set-up. Something to think about next Christmas smile.gif

audioguy 02-07-2013 02:23 PM

We may be related. I love the vacuum cleaner marks on the carpeting. VERY VERY VERY nice room. VERY !!!

The upgrade bug buries itself deep in the bone marrow and is very difficult to extract. I think we will see two Noesis (Plural: Noeses?) In your setup quite soon. (Hopefully, not followed by an attempt on your life by the wife). Ah yes, HDMI 2.0.....lets hope it has a new revision of HDCP that doesn't give my video gear seizures. Everytime I witness a handshake flash, I want to hold my equipment and tell it that everything will be ok.

Christmas bonus was spent largely on daddy’s HT toys and mommy's Pottery Barn addiction. Stock option pay out in Spring is going towards kids braces (times 2), family vacation, two golf trips that I have planned…you get the picture. Hard to justify yet another upgrade..not saying it won’t happen as I buy on impulse as much as the next HT addict…. but hard to justify at this point wink.gif

Nightlord 02-08-2013 11:34 AM

Where are you planning to tee up?

I completely understand. It’s difficult to justify any type of upgrade when there are other more important (based on familial consensus) things to do. Especially since you just had a huge upgrade. I remember your old setup with the in-wall speakers, and this is really a big upgrade. What’s awesome is, you already had great components, so you didn’t need to invest in new Pre/Pro or amp. Maybe you can walk around with bug spray, so when you feel that bug biting…….zap it!

One trip to Michigan in August is booked. My brother in law turns 40 and my two brother's in law, my father in law and I are going for a 5 day golf weekend. The other one will be in May with several co-workers but we haven't made reservations yet. Talking about heading down to Tennesse to play around Crossville.

If you need an extra for your Crossville trip, let me know! I am only 45 minutes away from there:D.

Sounds good Jeff. Lets stay in touch and perhaps we can work something out schedule wise. We can declare JTR speaker mulligans and leave my friends in the dust smile.gif
