Sony LED 950G or OLED A8G

So I'm in the market for a new TV. My 11 year old Sony Bravia LCD is getting darker by the day.

I was ready to buy the 950G LED 55" model for $1100. This model comes with the new X1 Ultimate processor. However I saw that they dropped the price on the OLED A8G model to $1500. The A8G comes with the older processor, X1 Extreme.

Question: If I purchase the OLED model and seeing that the picture quality is that much better with the newer OLED technology, would I not notice the advantages of the newer processor(Ultimate) in the OLED TV that much?

I don't mind spending the extra $400 if it's a good choice to do so. Is OLED with the Extreme processor that much better than the LED 950G using the Ultimate processor?

Which model would you purchase and why?

Viewing info:
10 feet from TV
Mainly Straight on viewing
Room lighting: a little brighter than dim. Not dark, not super bright.

Thanks for your help

From the mouth of sony themselves, X1 xtreme works almost the same as X1 ultimate on 4K tv's. X1 ultimate was designed with 8K tv's in mind by sony. The best you're going to see on a 4K tv is slightly better blu ray upscaling with ultimate, otherwise nothing really.

With picture quality, A8G with xtreme will look better than a 950 with ultimate, however if you're in a bright room, the A8G isn't among the bright tv's in the market, it is comparatively dimmer than the 950 side by side. Its contrast is much better than the 950, it being an oled. If you're not watching in a bright room, I would suggest buy the A8. Even if during daytime you have some natural light, at night it won't be an issue.

The TV will be in the living room so I don't want it to overpower the room. I am going larger with a 55 since I'm coming off of a 46" set. I don't need to change the piece of furniture that it will sit on. I'll still be able to place the bookshelf speakers on either side of the TV for 5.1. Also when looking at these higher end sets price becomes a factor when going above 55. I'd rather pick up some other toys with the extra cash

Thanks for the detailed response. This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. It made my decision to go with the oled, A8G.

As for lighting. Watching TV is mainly done at night with occasional use during the weekend days, which is all with natural lighting. If on those occasions when we sit to watch a movie during the day we usually pull the shades anyway.

Thanks again, it's very much appreciated.

I was wondering the same thing, but as it relates to upscaling Cable TV (Comcast) when watching sports like football, basketball, soccer, etc.

I have the 65" Sony 950G which has the X1 Ultimate Processor and after one day am not too thrilled with the way football looks compared to my old plasma. Would the A8G OLED look better when upscaling cable TV content (720p, 1080i, and 1080p) for sports even though it has the X1 Extreme Processor?

Looks like there's been some drops in XBR65A8G recently to about $2299. Is this about as good as it's going to get or should I wait for BlackFriday/CyberMonday? Does anyone know how low the A8F dropped to last year?

New to 4k and I am confused with the port situation. What does it mean that only 2 of the HDMI ports are full bandwidth HDMI 2.0 on the A8G?

I plan on using one of the 2 ports to connect a sound bar that leaves me with one full bandwidth port. I have a Xbox that will connect to the second. I also have a 4k cable box, can I connect that to the other ports and still get 4k?

What that means is only the full bandwidth ports will support upto 18 gbps bandwidth, which is needed for resolutions like 4K 60Hz 4:2:2, 12 bit chroma. If all your hdmi devices are not going to be used for HDR, the other two ports will still be able to display standard 4K. A 4K cable box (which doesn't do HDR) will connect fine to the other hdmi ports.

Well 10.8Gbps ports can't do 4k 60Hz, so even the cable box might not be happy with it.
