Thanks for your reminder, it saved me from myself. Earlier this morning, I deleted a bunch of Game of Thrones reruns from my TiVo's To Do List but must had also inadvertently deleted the Season 7 premier. Anyway, it's back on my To Do list so all is well again.

I've seen a lot of movies like that. Most anything with Melissa McCarthy or Will Farrell (in recent years) comes to mind!

We've been rewatching Season 1 this past week or so. We kinda binged the whole series over the last 2 or 3 years, but it's amazing how much I'd forgotten. Or how many people and plotlines come into play for the later seasons. Well done for sure!

I would love for HBO to release subscriber numbers to see how much of an uptick in paid subscriptions HBO gets during the weeks that Game of Thrones is on the air...must be massive...

It's really annoying to me that he hasn't finished book 6, when he's put out a new book in that poker series he writes. I think a lot of book fans are pretty angry at him.

I can't wait for the show to start back up. It's definitely one of the best shows ever produced. Film quality cinematography and effects, awesome sets, locations and costumes. Political intrigue, backstabbing, murder, revenge. Oh, and dragons! What's not to love? The cast has also
done an excellent job of bringing the characters to life.

George is apparently a big Mets fan. When he shows up at games, you can hear book fans shouting at him to stop goofing off and get back to work.

By the time the series finishes, will only but the diehard book readers care about the book he puts out?

Didn't he basically give the show the outline of how he was going to finish?

Sure there will be more details on every plot line and some minor ones the show won't cover.

But once people have a general jist of the fates of the main characters ...

As we've mentioned before, what you see on screen and what you read in a (as yet unwritten) book do not have to be the same.

The TV show may go from A to Z based on notes about the ending, but it doesn't mean every other letter in between will be identical.

Right but once people find out what happens to Dani, Arya, Jon, Jaime, Cersei, etc., does it matter if the book takes a more circuitous route to reach the same endings for these characters?

Some will but most of the people who were drawn into this saga by the show will be content, not to read the books.

That's assuming they reach the ending!

If the show kills some characters earlier or lets them survive to late in the game then that doesn't mean Martin will. If the last person sitting on the throne in the show is Sam in the final episode, that may be the only thing true to the intended ending. Plenty of alternate fates for the others though.

The books are *very* different than the series though. Many, many more characters, and people are dead on the show that are still alive in the books. Things happen on the show in different ways because they can't (obviously) tell the same story. It would cost too much. But they've also changed the story of certain characters so much that it completely changes the essence of who they are. So while it may reach the same destination, the path there is very different. The show has grown so far apart from the books that it's basically a different story now (like Dorne, for instance). I love the TV show, but I also love the books, and I really, really want to read the last two books, because I want to know what happens to the characters left out of the series.

I'm glad I stopped reading half-way through the first one. For one, I didn't particularly enjoy his writing style, even though I'm a huge fan of fantasy novels and have read hundreds of them, including trashy D&D stories (I used to read a book a day, every day, all through high-school).

Next, I'm not entirely convinced he will finish the series before passing on. That happened to the Wheel of Time series when Robert Jordan died. I had lost interest before the last battle anyway (too many "wool-headed" cliches), although now that his son wrote the final book I might be into actually reading what happens in the end.

As far as I, and probably most people, are concerned, the TV show is now the authority, by virtue of it marching on towards the end before the books. If they ever get there. It must really suck for Martin to realize this, I think he's likely got writer's block and no amount of outside pressure can open those faucets.

Jordan's son did not finish the Wheel of Time. His widow turned over RJ's notes to Brandon Sanderson.

Sanderson, IMO, did a great job of rapidly finishing the series in three novels, and I highly recommend you pick it back up if you have the time

While I consider Sanderson to be one of the best *and* most productive Fantasy authors, he is starting to slow down with his own 10 volume magnum opus. He is releasing Book 3 this fall and already admits he has to take much more time between novels than originally planned.

Writing is hard work. I'm glad I stuck to IT.

Thanks for the tip! I mixed up, it was for the Dune novels that Frank Herbert's son took over the mantle.

I can't wait for Season 7 to start!

I just have yet to finish the last episode, but did some binge watching myself as well. Last year I enjoyed Battle of the Bastards on my 50" TV, and mild surround sound. Re-watching it in 7.1 Dolby-MA with 6000w and 90" screen made the scenes that much more brutal. Especially the horse-man collisions.

I agree both that the TV show is now the definitive medium for the Game of Thrones story. I also agree that it has diverged from the books in many significant ways. I think the chances of George R.R. Martin actually publishing the last two books in his Song of Ice and Fire series ranges between slim and none. For these reasons, I have avoided rereading the books. As matters now stand, the less I remember them, and it's less all the time, the better.

Although the Blu Ray's are the shizzle above all shizzle, it's just impossible to wait until a new season gets released .. so, although I have to work with Spectrum HD or HBOgo, even at that, piping it through 7.2 and 130" is still quite satisfying ..

We'll be going Roku via HBO Now, as we only have internet at our place. My research (on this forum mostly) says that I can get 5.1 DolbyDigital+. Which is better than stereo. Hopefully HBO Now won't be laggy like last year's premier.

However, we'll be returning from a large family event a few states away Sunday night, so I'm not sure if we'll get to seeing the premier or not that night. Despite the "NO SPOILERS" tag on this thread, I will be avoiding it and Facebook until I can see the episode.
