That's the point - we don't care how it does for ABC but how it works as a show for us, the critical AVS viewers. If it sucks but gets ratings and makes money, would you be happy?

Were many of us happy with how 'Under the Dome' turned out?

The thing I'm worried about with this show is whether it's possible to do a show set in a superhero universe, referencing superheros, yet not involve any of the superheros themselves? Otherwise it's just another "super-secret government agency" kind of show populated with the usual stereotypes albeit with more clever dialog than usual. And the villains can't be super-powered if the protagonists aren't super-powered, so what's going to make it special other than the afore-mentioned clever Jossian dialog?

Will the public buy in just because of Joss? They didn't with 'Firefly' and 'Dollhouse', both of which were exceptionally written and produced. Of course, his fanbase has increased exponentially because of the Avenger franchise. But still, genre shows have a rough time of it, and ABC is not going to be satisfied with 'Arrow' level ratings.

I certainly hope he does a better job than he did with the first season of Dollhouse, that was a total trainwreck in my book. The second season was good, but that was closing the barn door after the horse bolted.

The first season of Dollhouse was horrific in terms of premise and stories. The pop star episode was almost Disney channel level.

However I can't blame Whedon for all of that fiasco as Fox had their hands all over the production screwing it up.

So yet again we are back in a situation where quality comes down to how much network interference there will be. How much of Revenge, Scandal and Grey's Anatomy will ABC want to wedge into the stories?

You got a beef with the topic, take it up with the OP!!! Wait...tongue.gif

As someone else mentioned, if it can't work on ABC/Marvel it can't work anywhere. My concern is that they'll try to make the show work. It will just stay on regardless of how bad the show is, being the TV lynchpin of the ABC/Marvel Universe. Hopefully that won't happen and it will be all good.

Huh?

My point was... IF it is a show that viewers like but doesn't make money, it stands a better chance to stay on-air with ABC than any other network... due to the licensing/ownership/etc.

Obviously I don't care if the show stays on IF it is a horrible show... but that's not what I said.

It goes without saying that a show that makes money stays on air (usually) because it makes money...

The worry here is that it might be a good show that doesn't score a huge audience... and any other network would pull it the second it stopped having ratings... whereas ABC is in the best position to let this show breathe and stay around... especially if Disney looks at it as a way to advertise their movie franchise year-round.

Ah I see, thanks for the clarification. We'll have to hope that ABC doesn't screw it up.

Yeah... it is true that we have to worry about the network mucking around... I'm just thinking/hoping that their desire to use this to upsell movies will keep their hands out of it. As long as they are happy with what Whedon is doing in their movies, it seems like they would let him do what he wants with the TV show too.

Joss Whedon would be a king on BBC America.

Who would want to be king of a failure of a network? A network that ruins what imports it does get and fills the rest of the schedules with overexposed syndicated content and an endless loop of Top Gear and Kitchen Nightmares.

HBO or FX maybe. At least they still have some respect for the potential of scripted drama.

If ABC is true to form, they will move it around the schedule then pull it from the air with unaired episodes in the can...

This show could very well be a huge hit and have tons of viewers.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the ratings settled to around 7-8 million total viewers. I mean I really had to convince my mom to even give this show a chance. She watches scifi stuff like Once Upon a Time, Eureka, Wharehouse 13, SG1 and loved Firefly. But somehow that superhero content turns her off.

I thought about what you said about your Mom and her choices in sci fi. Could it be that here are no stand out female superheroes? It's cool she watches those shows!

I don't know she just thinks superhero stuff is just all action and nothing else and says they can seem cartoony she hates cartoons and won't watch them on tv and even hates when they are on tv even if she isn't watching them (yet she wants to see many of the Pixar movies and Dreamworks animated ones).

Hard choice, SHIELD or NCIS, I think I'll DVR NCIS and watch SHIELD live

It's hard competition, also The Voice is on so ratings could be bad

I know. Don't forget on my9 a Yankees game in their playoff quest; unless the yankees lose by an insurmountable margin i'll watch Agents of Shield live on my crappy ABC 5.1 HD feed. The last time a Marvel show succeeded it was The Incredible Hulk, which aired back when cable was in its infancy and the Superman series dominated the comic book box office. The only shows that Marvel has made money off of are its cartoons on Disney XD, which are among the highest rated on the channel (one reason why Disney cancelled Tron Uprising). Utlimate Avengers is a good example of a show based on a comic book. Well made, animation awesome. Also, Marvel Mashups featuring pre-Disney marvel cartoons.

Weak for the first ep. As diverse as the Marvel universe is, it was like an episode of Heroes.

"Hero of the week" looks like the dude (Darnell) that Nikki was married to, yet has the power of Peter Petrelli. Previews for next week look better, but I'll bail if it's another stinker.

I enjoyed it. I'll hang around. I like the back and forth chatter, good shows to me are about the chemistry and the way the characters interact and I thought this one got off to a good start in that regard.

For the credentials this show has I thought it was an extremely boring pilot. Predictable resolution with Chekov's Gun, unoriginal character roles and a dearth of witty dialog to keep a cast-off villain from Heroes bearable.

As unoriginal as Sleepy Hollow is that show at least has some charisma and a few laughs. This show is only a Marvel license away from a formulaic Bones/NCIS procedural.

The agents at S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters must really like The Avengers because it is always playing on screens in the background. I bet come November they'll all be big fans of Thor: The Dark World. Of course this is the only way well ever see actual superheroes in this show. I'll keep watching for now but, that's my main concern, how long will it hold my interest when all they can do is talk about the real superheroes.

I enjoyed it. I thought the voice over at the beginning was too Heroes-esque. Sure, it wasn't too original, but I liked the quips they would throw out.

I thought it had rather trivial writing with any lack of star quality on the show. Not sure it will make my DVR list. May give it another try but not high hopes. Disappointing with such a build up that it was run of the mill stuff when you get down to it
