Yeah. I wonder if the writers had a plan to kill him off temporarily to surprise us in the season finale, or did they scramble to bring him back due to the viewers being upset.

Has to be the former, the eps were shot months ago and doubt they would have the time/budget to make major changes like changing the finale to bring a character back due to upset fans.

IDK, maybe I am getting tired of The Flash, but it is usually not a good sign when you fast forward through half of the season finale. I completely agree with your thoughts.

For a while there I thought I was watching the Matrix lol.

At least the season finale was better than most of the season - low bar there.

The problem with these season long same villain arcs is that are heroes have to be extremely stupid and inept through most of the season as they continue losing to the villain until the finale. it is painful to watch. If they were written intelligently, DeVoe would have been really stopped in the Christmas finale and we would have moved on to something else.

Regarding newborns - no one wants to see lizard babies on TV

I am glad that Ralph was part of the plan for defeating DeVoe and was saved .

Yeah and the multiple DeVoes animation was just as bad as the Agent Smiths one. Some of them looked like they were floating on air as they ran.

Even the animation of Flash punching the satellite was bad. And they showed it twice!

True about newborns. But that baby was almost as big as DA Cecil Horton and she delivered without an epidural.

And I know it’s not going to matter but someone explain to me why DeVoe needed to keep Ralph alive again even though he took the powers of all the other bus metas and they died?

He just needs the most recent one because he is using his body, so if he went to another body, Ralph would have completely died.

Funny as well, not sure if you watch Supernatural, but for the fight scene in the season finale it was very "Matrix-esque" as well. Maybe this just happens to coincide with WB releasing The Matrix on UHD lol

I couldn't get into Supernatural. I did see its pilot and Scooby-Doo episodes though. I guess I need to watch that for its Matrix scenes as a fan. A Smallville episode also copied Matrix's visual scenes.

I agree that they should more quickly find a way to end these villain arcs sooner in all the DC shows. I'd rather see 3-4 episodes (maybe more) on dealing with issues/villains and then moving on to another. Would make the season more appealing in my view.

For me, this season's story arc was extremely tedious. But for some reason I still watch. I like the DC shows on the CW.

Or shorter seasons with less episodes, but more quality episodes. Look at DC's Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning.

I think the biggest problem with this season was the fact that we had no clue what was going on the entire time. The "mystery" of what DeVoe was up to was not intriguing, and the revelation of his plans came way too late, so the whole season was basically just Barry whining about how he wasn't fast smart enough to figure out DeVoe's plan.

But it's TV, which is lower budget. And then the Matrix movie was around fifteen years ago. That is why they both look so bad. For fifteen years ago, what they did in the Matrix movie was cutting edge at the time.

I'm really tired of the "Big Bad". I'd rather have a couple of "Semi Big Bads" that ran for only part of the season.I found this arc tedious and I almost had to force myself to watch.

I'm starting to dread next season. It seems that when the main characters have babies, either the series loses focus and its audience, or the baby gets forgotten later in the season or in the next season.

I'll give next season a chance, but not with high hopes.

They actually explained all this... for a change... seriously, they actually plausibly explained this one bit of the season!

DeVoe's intellect was constantly growing... so each time he took over a new Meta's body, he was burning through them... which is why he kept having to hop from one to the next. IT was a bonus that he was also absorbing powers along the way. He saved Ralph for last because... Ralph's power was literally the only one who could contain DeVoe's constantly growing intellect.

So, once he was in Ralph, that was it... no need to keep hopping. Ralph was going to be his forever body... and the bonus was he could look like himself again.

All the other people died when he left their bodies because he had burnt them out... they were not there anymore... so they died when he left. Ralph would always have been okay if DeVoe left because his body and consciousness were immune to being burnt out by DeVoe.

It was ALL that, plus knowing Elongated Man is a known character in DC, that made it obvious Ralph would be saved by the end of the season.

‘The Flash': Chris Klein Joins Season Five as DC Comics Supervillain Cicada
By Ross A. Lincoln, TheWrap.com - Jul. 21, 2018

The CW’s “The Flash” has found its big bad for the show’s upcoming fifth season — Chris Klein (“American Pie,” “Election”) has signed on to play the supervillain Cicada, it was announced Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con 2018.

Described as a grizzled, blue-collar everyman whose family has been torn apart by metahumans, Cicada now seeks to exterminate the epidemic — one metahuman at a time.

First introduced in DC Comics in 2001 and created by Scott Kolins and Geoff Johns, Cicada is an apparent immortal who murdered his wife during a thunderstorm sometime in the early twentieth century. Filled with regret, he tried to kill himself, only to be struck by lightning, which gave him a vision that he’d live forever and bring his wife back to life. Years later, he formed a cult that murders people saved by The Flash, stealing their energy in order to prolong his own life.

Per “The Flash” Season 4 logline, after out-thinking The Thinker, you’d hope that Barry Allen aka The Flash (Grant Gustin) might have some down time to contemplate his future with his new wife, Iris (Candice Patton). But with their speedster daughter from the future, Nora (new series regular Jessica Parker Kennedy), already grown and a part of their lives, they’ve now got to face Central City’s newest menace — the DC Super-Villain Cicada!

“The Flash” season five premieres Tuesday, October 9, at 8/7c on The CW. The show is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Todd Helbing, Sarah Schechter and Eric Wallace.

So... no discussion at all this season. Wow. I haven't been online as frequently as I used to, but I almost couldn't find this thread!

Can't believe that nobody is at least psyched to see the 1990s Flash on the Elseworld's event that starts Sunday night!

I don't know anything about Elseworld. I didn't even know it was a crossover until I looked at the guide. And I saw they swapped the nights of Supergirl and the Flash.
