Just some interesting observations from the last episode. Maddie leaves for college in a $40-50K Volvo SUV (couldn't tell if it was an XC60 or 90, maybe the mom's insurance payout). Bosch's house, with that view, has to be expensive. He has very nice audio equipment, which is not generally cheap. He wears a Rolex Submariner, which is a $10-12k watch. But he drives an old Jeep Cherokee that might be worth like $800.

Just curious if anyone knows what a realistic salary for a Marine Vet/LA detective would be.

You're missing a big part of Harry's story. He was a writer on a cop movie, and that paid for the house. Otherwise he lives on the cop salary. Mattie's insurance money was mentioned once or twice

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about the writing thing that was mentioned earlier. My apologies.

Bosch got a payout from a movie that they did about one of his old cases.

It was touched upon in the first season and even more so in the novels but Harry bought his house from proceeds from consulting work on a police-type television show. Maddie's mom was a professional gambler, add to that a decent life insurance policy naming Maddie as sole beneficiary and I can totally see it.

Edit...we all answered at the same time.

it isn't a part of the book series , an interesting plot change .. also the exclusion of "the Lincoln lawyer" and his huge role in the latest Bosch novels... movie rights i would guess... in the novels his house was a "fixer upper"(earthquake damage) iirc...

I'm pretty certain that the early books in the Bosch series included information about Harry receiving a nice sized payout for consulting on a script that was based on one of his cases (there's even a movie poster in his house from the fictional movie) and he used the cash to buy his aerie in the canyon.

That is correct. He consulted for Black Echo which coincidentally happens to be the title of the first Bosch novel. The house he buys is later damaged in an earthquake and has to be demolished. He rebuilds it and moves back in.

There's even a "The Black Echo" movie poster prominently displayed in Harry's living room, visible repeatedly in many scenes through all five seasons, to remind us (and presumably Harry's visitors) how the house was financed.

In the books, Harry's house was damaged by an earthquake after Harry had lived in it for a while. One of the books spends some time describing Harry's problems with getting his house repaired and approved by the building inspector.

Just finished S5, still really enjoy this show. I try to wait a day or two between episodes to savor it since it’s so long between seasons, but it’s hard not to just binge straight through.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Jacqueline Obradors. I was a fan from the NYPD Blue days (just finishing up a rewatch for the first time since the original run) and was very happy to see her resurface on Bosch.

the story is following the books more closely now , a good thing imo.. i miss the Lincoln lawyer tie in, but that's Hollywood...i'm not to familiar with Jaqueline Obradors, i'll have to pay more attention(i never watched NYPD blue)...

I'd like to see Mickey Haller too, but, everybody associates that character with Matthew McConaughey and I doubt he is available.

Her developing role as Detective Ortiz will be interesting...sort of a female Bosch in her unique policing. I suspect her propensity for cutting corners will eventually get her in trouble. Maybe a Harry & Christina hook-up is in the cards. A previous co-worker relationship didn't go too well for Harry. Maybe he should stay away from such. And maybe I should re-watch. I binge-watch too fast sometimes.

Maddie's expensive Volvo SUV was questionable for me, too. Sometimes producers slip commercials into stories without too much thought for story-line. Jus' sayin'.

Jeez, I didn't even know S5 was out until Tuesday night. I've finished it. I don't know if anyone caught this but; there is a very cool, two-part, Easter egg during the last scene of the season.

Spoiler!

Such a cool show!
