Bosch on Amazon Streaming

Bosch season 1 was just released via Amazon Streaming, free to Prime members.

There's nothing new here, its a standard detective drama. What it brings to the table are 1st rate production values, an outstanding cast with writing that does them justice. PQ and AQ are also excellent. This will be a popular show simply because its so well done.

Lets see if anyone recognizes Veronica Cartwright.

bargervais and Speed Racer like this.

Oh to be a retiree in a snowstorm. Hey I am! I swallowed the whole thing yesterday. Watch 3 episodes, shovel, three more, dinner, Final 4, then Bed. I was enthralled. I have been on patrol (in my head) it seems like forever. This was indeed a great procedural. I used to imagine Scott Wolf as Bosch but "The Smoke Monster" did a very good job of portraying the emotionally aloof detective. The nuances and foreshadowing were superb. The high jingo (office politics) that is such an integral part of the Bosch world was definitely present. If you have Amazon Prime, get your moneys worth by peeking at this. If you hate then stop after 1. It is good from the start and easy to tell if you like it.

I binged this yesterday. What a great show!!

I really ought to act more like a woman of my advancing years, but I’m growing old disgracefully.

Just one episode left for me.

I recommend this highly. Great casting, writing, etc.

Yes, another police procedural, but this is pretty well done.

One of my gripes though, is that our TV characters are not allowed to live in modest dwellings! I guess this isn't anything new though. Even Rockford had his trailer right on the beach at Paradise Cove in Malibu

I read the book some time ago, and this representation is very different...and better. Connelly must have had second thoughts and embellished the story when producing his vision.

I like the result and hope for more. Very well done IMO, and well cast.

I am a big Connolley fan as well. His brother is in charge of network security at my company, which got me interested in trying him out years ago. I have been very pleased with this series, and love the cast and all the familiar faces.

I am about 6 episodes in, and hope to finish it up by this weekend.

People are comparing Bosch with True Detective. Is it really on that level?

I thought it had some of the overtones of True Detective and of Wallander, but not the polish and superb acting of TD. It is going to be a long time before we see the equal of the character portrayed by McConaughey. I thought the resolution in Bosch was much better though. TD's ending was very weak and left me flat. Bosch's end obviously was designed to leave room for other seasons.

Good article by Maureen Ryan about Amazon originals, from the HOTP thread,

Why Is Amazon Making Pretty Good Shows?

To expand a bit on my earlier post about the TD/Bosch comparison, I love the books, I really like Welliver in the title role and being from LA myself it's nice to see the city and how it's changed, and the production values are top notch, but the show itself is not really any different than many other cop procedurals on broadcast/cable TV, it's not memorable in other words. True Detective, to me anyway, is quite memorable, so much so that I think the creators are going to have a really hard time coming close to what they did in the first season with the upcoming second season.

That said, unless Bosch falls off a cliff quality-wise I'll be watching every episode they make.
Spoiler!

I didn't think so, thanks.

Your comments got me to thinking that maybe I should have put that in spoiler tags, which I have now done. I'm not sure what the proper protocol is for streaming video content, probably best to stay away unless you've seen all of it, or maybe not, use spoiler tags, I don't know...

I watched the 1st. episode as some sort of test twice over the last year and a half and was pissed that there were not more. I enjoyed the series very much and have read dozen or so of the books, was this from one of Connelly books or something just for video? I have a memory of the garage but cannot but it with any of the books. I would very much like to see this move forward, maybe one of the networks pick it up. The time frame at 40 to 43 minutes would fit in the hour format, or was it something that they already turned down?

I watched the first two episodes because a bud of mine compared it too Southland. I being a huge Southland fan was disappointed but the show itself is still pretty good, just wish I wasn't hyped up for it prior of watching lol.

If you are talking about Connelly, the answer is his books FAR exceed TD.

This is what I was thinking. There is no way any character was played as well as McConaughey played Rust Cole. Maybe the best acting performance I've ever seen. McConaughey is brilliant and his career is going to hit a whole new level if he stays his current course.

I really enjoyed this series and would recommend it to anyone who likes police/detective shows. I would rate it above the typical network show. The performances are good, but comparing them to McConaughey in TD is not exactly fair, how many performances are at that level?

As for comparing it to Southland, they are two different styles. Southland gave me more of a documentary/ride along feeling. Bosch is more like a feature film, IMO. Although one of the actors is in both.

And I did see that Veronica Cartwright was listed the credits, but I didn't spot her. Which character? Not the mom?

Yup, she was Raynard/David's mom. I recognized her right away as I had seen here in something else recently and she looked familiar so I looked her up then.

Finished it over the weekend and really liked it and hope we get more of it soon.

Norms, Dupar's and Musso and Frank, now there is some serious LA iconography, eaten many a meal in all of those places, makes me a little homesick for my old stomping grounds.

I lived near from that Norm's in West Hollywood for many years. I like it as much as Denneys for breakfast.

Veronica Cartwright was recently in Resurrection. I don't remember her looking that old. Maybe it was makeup?

Bosch was very well cast, fitting the character from the novels well. The core mystery of the young boy's murder was from "City of Bones" but otherwise there was lots added and some significant changes. I have no problem with the TV series adaptation as it was done in the author's style. My wife and I enjoyed the series; I'm glad because it's so difficult to find something we both enjoy together.

I tried to watch. Gave it two episodes. I'm just not into procedural cop shows. I wasn't sure what it was until I watched. I started Marco Polo on netflix instead.

That's where I saw here, Resurrection. She's 65 years old and unless I'm mistaking her for someone else she does appear to have aged rapidly, but then again, I really haven't seen her in anything in quite a long time.
