Did I ever mention that Fox sucks. If not FOX SUCKS! Ya, I know, Fox isn't the only network that sucks. They all share that distinction.

'The Goldbergs,' 'Schooled' Renewed at ABC
By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter - May 11, 2019

ABC is doubling down on The Goldbergs and Schooled.

The Disney-owned network has renewed The Goldbergs for a seventh season and picked up its 1990s-set spinoff Schooled for a sophomore order. The news arrives after a particularly long round of negotiations into late Friday night between ABC and producers Sony Pictures Television, which also included pickups for rookie drama For Life and multicamera entry United We Fall.

In its sixth season, the 1980s-set semi-autobiographical Goldbergs, starring Wendi McLendon-Covey, has been a major asset for ABC. The single-camera comedy from Sony TV is ABC's No. 3 overall comedy, ranking behind only Modern Family and Roseanne spinoff The Conners. With the renewals, ABC and creator Adam F. Goldberg will keep their hourlong block of comedy as is.

With Modern Family returning for its final run next season, The Goldbergs is increasingly valuable. The Goldbergs — a 1980s-set semi-autobiographical comedy based on Goldberg's childhood — has been a cash cow for Sony, netting a rich syndication deal with Tribune and SVOD pact with Hulu.

Schooled, meanwhile, has a great backstory. Former Sony TV heads Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht fought to save the series after ABC initially passed on the pilot back in 2017. After initially shopping the series (Hulu passed), Sony and Goldberg pressed former ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey to air the pilot as an episode of The Goldbergs. Ratings for the episode ticked up and the comedy was retooled to add The Goldbergs favorite AJ Michalka (Lainey) as its new star before ABC handed out a 13-episode series order. Goldberg created the series alongside The Goldbergs' Marc Firek. Bryan Clalen and Tim Meadows also reprise their roles from the flagship on the single-camera spinoff that originally starred Nia Long, Missi Pyle and Ana Gasteyer.

Ratings: S.H.I.E.L.D. Returns Down in Demo, But Up Sharply in Viewers
By Joe Otterson, Variety.com - May 11, 2019

ABC’s already-renewed Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. opened Season 6 on Friday night with 2.34 million total viewers and a 0.4 rating, down in the demo from both Season 5’s average (2.1 mil/0.5) and finale (1.9 mil/0.5) — all of which aired an hour later, leading out of Once Upon a Time — while delivering its biggest audience since 5×08.

TVLine readers gave the premiere an average grade of “B”; read post mortem.

Elsewhere:

FOX | Last Man Standing (4.7 mil/0.8) and the freshly cancelled Cool Kids (3.4 mil/0.6) were both steady with their finales, while “on-the-bubble” Proven Innocent (1.7 mil/0.4) ticked up with its freshman closer.

CBS | MacGyver‘s season finale (5.4 mil/0.6) and Hawaii Five-0 (6.6 mil/0.7) were both steady, while Blue Bloods (8.4 mil/0.8, TVLine reader grade “B-“) ticked up with its finale “wedding” — and copped its largest audience since Feb. 15.

THE CW | Dynasty (454K/0.1) added a few eyeballs while clutching onto that 0.1.

NBC | The Blacklist (3.9 mil/0.6) dipped in audience while steady in the demo.

MY DAD WROTE A PORNO
HBO, 10:00 p.m. ET
SPECIAL PREMIERE:
This comedy special, taped before an audience at a London theater, stars Jamie Morton, James Cooper and Alice Levine, who preside over what amounts to a sort of book reading with lots and lots of humorous asides. It’s based on a podcast that’s already compiled four seasons of material, and generated a successful international tour. Here’s the gist: Morton’s father once wrote a series of bad porno books (that particular phrase, by the way, comes courtesy of the Department of Redundancy Department), under the pen name Rocky Flintstone, about a saucy young woman, Belinda Blumenthal, who sells saucepans. (I told you she was saucy.) On the podcast, Morton and his two friends read enthusiastically from the books, laughing and joking all the way about the tackiness of both the plots and the prose. For this special, the trio go from bad to worse, presenting and performing a reading of a “lost chapter,” an unpublished work, that was part of the Flintstone canon but never brought to print. It is, indeed, terrible, and brings to mind the famous case of Naked Came the Stranger, the 1969 bestseller, a soft-core bestselling novel purportedly written by “demure Long Island housewife” Penelope Ashe. That book actually was written by a couple dozen authors, each contributing a chapter, under the playful eye of Newsday writer Mike McGrady. The difference: Naked Came a Stranger was written intentionally to be very, very bad, while the Flintstone stories earned that verdict honestly, like Ed Wood’s famously awful movie, Plan 9 from Outer Space. All that said, HBO’s My Dad Wrote a Porno special isn’t nearly as funny as its concept. It’s unusual enough, though, to sample, especially on a slow TV night, to judge for yourself about how long you enjoy traveling down this Rocky road.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE
NBC, 11:29 p.m. ET

This week, the guest host is Emma Thompson, who brings more versatility and talent, as well as more of a sense of humor, than most actors who step on the SNL center stage. Musical guests: the Jonas Brothers.

SIGH... Okay, FINE!! I'll keep it. It's not as if I need the space. HTPCs are unlimited in that regard.

Might as well ask the group.. keep or delete "Proven Innocent?" We watched the first 2 or 3, and banked the rest. I'm not going to bother asking about "Lethal Weapon." That's getting deleted.

Walking the fine line between jaw-dropping and a plain ol' yawn.

I thought it was poorly written. I quit after 2 eps. For The People was a much better show.

Obituary
Peggy Lipton, star of 'Mod Squad' and 'Twin Peaks,' has died at 72
By Bryan Alexander, USA Today - May 12, 2019

Peggy Lipton, the actress who rose to fame in TV's groundbreaking 1960s series "Mod Squad" and starred in the 1990s series "Twin Peaks," has died at age 72 of cancer.

The news was confirmed by her two daughters Kidada and Rashida Jones, from Lipton's marriage to music producer Quincy Jones.

"We are heartbroken that our beloved mother passed away from cancer today," the statement said. "She made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side. We feel so lucky for every moment we spent with her."

The statement called for privacy for the family and continued: "We can't put all of our feelings into words right now but we will say: Peggy was, and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond. She will always be a part of us."

Lipton played Julie Barnes, one of a trio of Los Angeles undercover "hippie cops" on the counter-culture "The Mod Squad" with Michael Cole and Clarence Williams III. The show aired on ABC from 1968-1973.

She was nominated for Emmys and won a Golden Globe in 1971 for her performance. The show addressed issues such as the Vietnam War, drugs and domestic violence.

Lipton married music producer Quincy Jones in 1974, and focused on her family and two daughters. The couple divorced in 1989.

Lipton appeared in the 1979 “Mod Squad” TV reunion and made a cameo appearance in a 1999 movie version of "The Mod Squad" that starred Claire Danes (as Julie Barnes), Omar Epps and Giovanni Ribisi.

In the 1990s, she played the role of Norma Jennings in the TV series "Twin Peaks." She also played the same character in the show's 2017 revival.

'The Goldbergs' Creator Moves From Sony to ABC Studios With Big Overall Deal
By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter - May 12, 2019

EXCLUSIVE: Independent studio Sony Pictures Television is losing a key comedy showrunner.

The Goldbergs and Schooled creator Adam F. Goldberg — fresh off renewals for both series — is leaving his longtime home at Sony TV and has signed a four-year overall deal with ABC Studios. Sources estimate the pact is valued in the mid eight-figure range, all-in. The deal will begin in June when Goldberg's Sony pact expires. He will move from his longtime home on Sony's Culver City lot to a larger office at Disney in Burbank. Sources say Sony low-balled Goldberg (Imaginary Mary, Breaking In) and did not expect him to leave the studio. Once ABC Studios came calling with a sizable offer, Sony then attempted to re-up the showrunner, who opted to leave after being strongly pursued by parent company Disney.

"It’s a dream come true getting the opportunity to collaborate with Patrick Moran and ABC Studios for the next four years," Goldberg told THR. "I’ve been a lifetime Disney superfan and they now have all of my favorite childhood franchises under one roof. Every week of The Goldbergs I write about how Marvel comics, Star Wars, The Muppets, Tron and Indiana Jones shaped who I am today. These properties are my true passion and baked into my DNA. I cannot wait to use the extensive Disney library to continue to make family friendly TV that parents can enjoy with their kids. Patrick and ABC Studios have been a fantastic partner on Schooled and I cannot wait to continue to collaborate with them for years to come."

With his move to ABC Studios, Goldberg will remain creatively involved in both shows (with his home movie taglines on The Goldbergs expected to continue). While The Goldbergs is 100 percent owned by Sony TV, spinoff Schooled is a co-production with ABC Studios and Sony, making it easier for the showrunner to remain at its helm. Goldberg took a back seat running the flagship this season as he focused on launching and co-showrunning Schooled. Both shows are housed on the same floor and Goldberg shuffles between both writers' rooms. Schooled has been a strong midseason performer for ABC this season. The network next season will already say farewell to its signature comedy as Modern Family, which will wrap its run with an 11th final season.

Goldberg's pact is the latest sizable overall deal in the past few months as competition for top showrunners continues to sizzle after Netflix inked Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes to massive nine-figure deals. Broadcast-based studios have been aggressive in courting proven hit-makers as Disney, Comcast and Warners are all launching streaming platforms in the next year or two in a bid to directly complete with Netflix. Goldberg follows Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Preacher, Future Man, Black Monday) as top content producers to leave Sony. The latter producing duo departed Sony last month for a massive film and TV pact with Lionsgate. Meanwhile, Sony recently inked drama showrunners Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon (Homeland) and comedy producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse) to sizable deals as the studio looks to bolster its ranks. The Goldbergs — a 1980s-set semi-autobiographical comedy — has been a cash cow for the studio, netting a rich syndication deal with Tribune and SVOD pact with Hulu. Sony retains 100 percent ownership of the flagship series.

Sony TV has faced an uphill battle of late as broadcast, cable and streaming platforms increasingly shift their focus on owning their programming. Sony is an independent studio that has only a stake in its niche streaming platform Crackle. Sony's top showrunners with overall deals at the studio include Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad), Norman Lear (Netflix's dearly departed One Day at a Time), Graham Yost (who is also shopping his overall deal elsewhere) and David Shore, among others.

Goldberg is the latest showrunner to land a rich overall deal. Universal TV re-signed The Good Place creator Mike Schur to a five-year, nine-figure pact after losing Mindy Kaling to Warner Bros. TV (who signed a six-year, eight-figure overall). Fresh Off the Boat showrunner Nahnatchka Khan also moved her overall from 20th TV to Universal TV. And This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman inked a massive nine-figure pact to remain with Disney's 20th TV.

Goldberg is repped by WME, Circle of Confusion and attorney Bruce Gellman. The deal has been in the works for months, well before the war between the Writers Guild and agencies.

CBS will release a black-and-white version of Jordan Peele’s Twilight Zone on May 30th
By Andrew Liptak, TheVerge.com - May 11, 2019

In April, CBS All Access launched Jordan Peele’s reboot of The Twilight Zone, the latest in a string of remakes of the franchise, and the latest anthology-style show to come from a streaming service. Now, CBS is releasing a new version of it, this time in black-and-white, which harkens back to the style of the original.

The first couple of episodes of the new series cut really close to the original — so much so that reviewer Samantha Nelson noted that they’re a bit weaker than they might have otherwise been. Some viewers complained about another aspect of the show: Peele’s version was in color, a departure from the originals, which came in black and white. Some fans noted that they were adjusting their TV’s settings so that the new episodes would look like the originals.

Now, the black-and-white version will debut on CBS All Access on May 30th, and CBS released a trailer that shows off the change, which also provides a good overview of the series itself. Presumably, the original colored version of the series will also remain available.

Prior to the show’s launch earlier this year, executive producer Simon Kinberg told Vulture that “we did consider doing the whole series black-and-white, because we were so obsessed with the original show,” but ultimately didn’t want to copy its style too much. “The black-and-white felt like it was a step too far. It wasn’t honoring it, but a carbon copy of it.”

It looks like they had a change of heart, and decided to go full black-and-white. Peele’s rationale? “‘Cause... come on.”

Fox Picks Up Tate Taylor Southern Drama ‘Filthy Rich’ Starring Kim Cattrall To Series
By Nellie Andreeva and Denise Petski, Deadline.com - May 11, 2019

Fox has ordered its fifth drama series for the 2019-20 season. The network has picked up Filthy Rich, a soapy drama from The Help writer-director Tate Taylor, Imagine Television and 20th Century Fox TV, with Kim Cattrall to star and produce.

Filthy Rich, which is being eyed as a companion for hip-hop family drama Empire, was one of five Fox drama pilots which generated strong buzz consistently throughout the pilot process. The other four, Prodigal Son, NeXt, Deputy and Untitled Annie Wiseman/Jason Katims, were picked up to series on Thursday.

As we reported at the time, the reason Filthy Rich, which co-stars Gerald McRaney, was not picked up to series with its peers was that details were still being worked out. They had to do with writer/director/exec producer’s Taylor availability as his film schedule may not allow for the series to be ready for fall.

This marks a happy ending for Filthy Rich‘s two-year journey to the screen. The network originally bought the pitch last development season with a put pilot commitment. It did not go to pilot, and Taylor went on to direct the movie Eve starring Jessica Chastain. Both sides remained high on the project, which led to a meeting last December between Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn, Collier and the Imagine team where the drama got a pilot green light on the spot, ahead of the traditional pilot season.

Written and directed by Taylor, Filthy Rich is a southern Gothic family drama in which wealth, power and religion collide – with outrageously soapy results. When the patriarch of a mega-rich Southern family, famed for creating a wildly successful Christian television network, dies in a plane crash, his wife and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will, threatening their family name and fortune. With monumental twists and turns, Filthy Rich presents a world in which everyone has an ulterior motive – and no one is going down without a fight.

FoxAubrey Dollar, Corey Cott, Benjamin Aguilar, Mark L. Young, Melia Kreiling, Steve Harris, David Denman and Olivia Macklin also star.

Taylor is executive producing with his producing partner John Norris via Wyolah Films alongside Imagine’s Grazer and Francie Calfo. Overseeing for Imagine TV are Anna Culp and Jillian Kugler. Cattrall produces. The series is a co-production between 20th Century Fox TV, Imagine Television and Fox Entertainment.

FILTHY RICH
Studio: 20th Century Fox Television, Imagine Television, FOX Entertainment
Format: One-hour drama
EP/W/D: Tate Taylor
EP/NW: Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo, John Norris
P: Kim Cattrall
Anna Culp and Jillian Kugler will serve as the project’s point executives for Imagine Television

Allison Tolman Pilot ‘Emergence’ Moves From NBC to ABC With Series Order
By Joe Otterson, Variety.com - May 11, 2019

The drama pilot “Emergence” has been ordered to series at ABC, though the project had originally been developed at NBC.

The series, which hails from ABC Studios, centers around a police chief (Allison Tolman) who takes in a young child (Alexa Swinton) that she finds near the site of a mysterious accident who has no memory of what has happened. The investigation draws her into a conspiracy larger than she ever imagined, and the child’s identity is at the center of it all.

In addition to Tolman and Swinton, the series also stars Owain Yeoman, Ashley Aufderheide, Robert Bailey Jr., Zabryna Guevara, Donald Faison, and Clancy Brown. Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters will write and executive produce. Paul McGuigan directed the pilot and is an executive producer.

Sources say that ABC was somewhat dissatisfied with its own development slate this year and moved on “Emergence” after NBC passed on the project. This year also represents a transitional one for ABC, with current network head Karey Burke taking over for Channing Dungey at the end of 2018 and Dana Walden assuming her post-21st Century Fox-Disney merger role as chairwoman of Disney Television Studios and ABC Entertainment in March.

“Emergence” is also one of only three series orders thus far that is solely under the ABC Studios banner, all of which are set up at ABC. The others are the Cobie Smulders drama based on the “Stumptown” graphic novel series and the “Black-ish” prequel “Mixed-ish.” The studio does have two co-productions on tap for next season with Sony Pictures Television, namely the legal drama “For Life” and multi-cam comedy “United We Fall,” both of which are also at ABC.

You Can Now Stream Big Little Lies for Free on YouTube
By Sadie Gennis, TVGuide.com - May 11, 2019

HBO, you are too good to us sometimes. The network has now made the entire first season of Big Little Lies available to stream on its YouTube channel. The catch? You only have this weekend to watch all seven episodes of the Emmy-winning limited series drama's first season ahead of its Season 2 premiere on Sunday, June 9.

Based on the book of the same name, Big Little Lies stars Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoe Kravitz as a group of California mothers who are harboring dark secrets under their idyllic facades. Originally just intended to run one season, fans were somewhat surprised when HBO ordered an additional installment of the summer hit, which will find the women struggling in the wake of last season's big cliffhanger. Season 2 also marks Meryl Streep's return to TV, so if you didn't already have a reason to catch up on Big Littles Lies, you do now.

However, the HBO series clearly isn't for everyone based on the YouTube streams. Since the network made the entire first season available for free on Friday, the series premiere has been viewed 26,000 times, but the second episode hasn't even hit 6,000 views as of writing this. Maybe viewers were just taking a break to savor the delicious Monterey drama, or maybe it just failed to live up to the two-year hype cycle surrounding the series.

But if you want to take this (free!) opportunity to see if Big Little Lies is for you — or if you simply want to refresh yourself before Season 2 — stream Season 1 on YouTube now. Or if you subscribe to HBO, HBO Go, or HBO Now, you can obviously still stream the drama there. There are so many choices we can't help but feel a little spoiled right now.

Big Little Lies returns Sunday, June 9 at 9/8c on HBO.

‘The Baker and The Beauty’ Ordered to Series at ABC
By Joe Otterson, Variety.com - May 11, 2019

ABC has ordered the drama project “The Baker and the Beauty” to series.

In the series, based on the Israeli series created by Assi Azar for Keshet Broadcasting, Daniel Garcia (Victor Rasuk) is working in the family bakery and doing everything that his loving Cuban parents and siblings expect him to do. But on a wild Miami night he meets Noa Hamilton (Nathalie Kelley), an international superstar and fashion mogul, and his life moves into the spotlight.

In addition to Kelley and Rasuk, the series also stars Carlos Gomez, Lisa Vidal, Dan Bucatinsky, Belissa Escobedo, Michelle Veintimilla, and David Del Rio.

Dean Georgaris serves as writer and executive producer with Becky Hartman Edwards and director David Frankel. In addition, Keshet’s Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Peter Traugott and Rachel Kaplan executive produce along with Assar. The series is produced by Universal Television and ABC Studios in association with Keshet Studios.

ABC’s other drama orders this season thus far include the “Stumptown” adaptation with Cobie Smulders, the legal drama “For Life,” and “Emergence” starring Allison Tolman. On the comedy side, the network has the multi-cam “United We Fall” and the “Black-ish” prequel series “Mixed-ish.” “Grey’s Anatomy” has been picked up for both Seasons 16 and 17, while fellow Shondaland shows “Station 19” and “How to Get Away With Murder” have also been renewed.

IMHO, this is just plain stupid. The other reboots were in color and I don't remeber reading about anyone bitching back then. I suppose they (the bitchers) are going to complain about it being in DD5.1, when the original was in mono.

All of the episodes going forward better be in color.

What's wrong on offering it in both formats?

It's just a stunt to stir up some buzz for a show that isn't getting any. Wouldn't surprise me to know this all got cooked up in a PR boardroom. Kinda like the phrase "by popular demand."

Walking the fine line between jaw-dropping and a plain ol' yawn.

Nothing, as long as they do it. I was just pointing out that it was stupid to bitch about it in the first place, considering that the other reboots were in color as well. And to give in...?

Surprisingly, the last season of Lethal weapon was very good.

And I enjoyed the Passage as well.

Some fans noted that they were adjusting their TV’s settings so that the new episodes would look like the originals.
WTH!?!? Why the heck would anyone do that?

and

Quote:
Prior to the show’s launch earlier this year, executive producer Simon Kinberg told Vulture that “we did consider doing the whole series black-and-white, because we were so obsessed with the original show,”
I'm glad they didn't do that. I would not have watched it. Although I am behind. I have only watched the first few episodes.

It's already bad enough that CBS AA doesn't have UHD or HDR.

The CW is a Horrible Network

Sunday night's episode of Charmed was only 38:46 in length. The CW is the worst network when it comes to episode length. Management needs to be tarred and feathered.

I thought my Samsung notebook had a non-replaceable battery but after research found it could be replaced...with a little work.

It was a fun spy show that got next to no push from ABC. I enjoyed it as well, but I would have been surprised had ABC decided to renew. It seemed more of a USA Network show (from a few years back when they were doing Burn Notice, Psych, White Collar, and Covert Affairs).
