Nice. I lack empathy, huh? Awfully quick to judge on little information for someone who just made a statement about acceptance.

I'm a big sci-fi/fantasy fan, and will watch pretty much any series that has a strong sci-fi/fantasy focus. But I'm not into most TV drama series. So the first few episodes, I almost gave up because it seemed like one of those series that sci-fi/fantasy was a weak back drop for what was really another genre. It's the reason I gave up on Outlander, since it's really a gothic romance that doesn't use sci-fi to built the plot much at all beyond the beginning of the series.

Now sci-fi/fantasy is a genre that has often been about promoting diversity and acceptance about other cultures and other ways of life. It's just typically not nearly so forward about it. Had Sense8 been less heavy handed in the initial episodes, they likely would have pulled in more viewers who were a bit uncomfortable with the messaging as is. Then it could have been spread out more throughout the series. That's why I said it depends on what their goal is. If it's only to preach to the choir--those who, apparently, like you are already completely open to the messaging--then they succeeded at that. But if they wanted to reach others, I don't think it was a success at all. Narrative is a powerful form of argument. But you gotta get people invested in the narrative in order to use it that way.

I wasn't specifically talking to you. It was generally, but I you are right. If you are expecting a straight up scifi you would be disappointed.

Well, I don't always have to have space operas, post apocalyptic scenarios, magicians and elves, or comic book heroes. But I did feel like with Sense8 that they sacrificed developing the sci-fi part of it a lot in order to push specific themes. And that doesn't have to happen. Look at Joe Haldeman's Forever War which has a powerful message about LGBT and inclusion (or more correctly, what it's like to be excluded). Sci-fi/fantasy is a great vehicle for exploring such subjects.

And I do think the Sense8s LGBT themes are important. I just wish they were a little more rhetorically savvy about attracting viewers who would most benefit from it. There are many Americans that are coming to terms with acceptance of LGBT, and this series had potential to invite more to become more understanding of the issues and problems in life LGBT faces. I think if the series had perhaps avoided the evil parent stereotype that they setup with Nomi's mother, and a little less on the gay sex, and they likely would have captured more viewers.

On the upside, Netflix did label it as a "gay and lesbian tv show." That, and because the word is most likely out about the content, means people inclined to be anti LGBT are not likely to watch the show and then rate it low on Netflix and IMDB. It should get the user ratings that it deserves. The question is whether or not it will get the viewership it needs to keep the show running. I hope so.

It took me about the middle of the 3rd and into the 4th episode before I got hooked or I guess started to understand what was going on, and finally figuring out who all the characters were, definitely hoping for another season. I would have sworn I read it was renewed, but I must have imagined that or some website got ahead of themselves.

Korean girl, Sun was probably my favorite character, but actually liked them all after I got totally hooked. Agree there was a lot of sex that really didn't do that much for the story, but I can live with it as long as the story is good.

Everyone keeps saying this....therefore, I have decided not to proceed to the 2nd episode.

You could always fast forward through them. There's more to the show than that. I think it's still worth checking out. Has a lot of potential.

If you find yourself needing to FF through certain segments of a TV show, you're better off watching a different TV show. There are lots of 'em to choose from these days.

She was also in a good, low budget, Korean movie about trying to rescue a little girl that was taken by a sea monster called "The Host" (also on Netflix). Despite a budget probably half of what SyFy spends for their usually awful movies, the effects are far superior.

... but IIRC, you won't see the full range of her "acting" like you might if she were on OITNB - if you're saying what I think you're saying.

just finished the season and loved it - it is for adults, it is graphic and sexual but it is all portrayed so well - the cinematography is a joy to watch and i loved how they demonstrated each person and how they used one of the others abilities -

to me the writing is top notch. i like that the sci-fi is not a huge focal point and really focus in on the personal lives of the individuals. there is just enough sci-fi to the point that one does not over power the other -

Good summation! After being skeptical at first because of how slow it started in the first couple of episodes, I was really happy with the way things turned out. This is now solidly in my top 5 of Netflix original series. The only real problem I had was with the ending ...

I still haven't gotten back to this. After watching Jupiter Ascending, it really put me off about trying to watch the rest of Sense8. Hopefully I'll try to get around to watching the rest of Sense8 before the end of August. But right now, even though I've had the time, I ended up watching other shows instead.

I loved it. I loved how there was no real hard SF explanation, just a general discussion about evolution (i.e., no technobabble). I love how all of the expected tropes of the genre got turned on their heads (at least a lot of the time). I kept expecting them to physically come together as the series progressed, but then realized the entire point of a sense8 is that physical proximity isn't necessary. I loved their story arcs. I loved the dynamics about sexuality and gender identity (even as some of it made me a little uncomfortable). I loved Sun and Lito the best--his polyamorous dynamic was wonderful and beautiful, and the woman in the relationship (I forget her named but LOVED her character) was an unexpected joy and totally not what I expected her to be.

And the editing...Jesus, it made my head hurt thinking about the continuity problems of filming the same scene on different continents and then seamlessly editing them together. Just wonderful.

For those of you who are SF readers, this struck me as a middle-stage Samuel R. Delaney novel in it's themes and ideas.

This show was a beautiful mess. I hated the Indian character and her story (even though she was the 2nd hottest actress) the most. I was glad she showed something towards the end.

The most amazing thing about this show was the music! The sound and dynamics (which were downright annoying with the low dialog and loud explosions) weren't as good as "Daredevil". However, the music was great!
