this show sounds interesting...sounds like an adult Harry Potter...who would have ever thought that SyFy would actually have 2 really good non-cheesy sci-fi/fantasy shows on at the same time- The Expanse and now The Magicians

Looks like they're leveraging the floating sex harness for both shows.

I saw Ep1 pilot last month and enjoyed it, so I am onboard for Ep2 tonight.

"12 Monkeys" isn't too shabby either.

I now believe there is really hope for SyFy. I am enjoying The Expanse, The Magicians and really looking forward to the next season of 12 Monkeys.

I agree with those who say 'The Expanse' and '12 Monkeys' represents a big quality jump from what the Syfy Network has been trafficking since the end of BSG. But what I don't need is another "pretty teenagers with powers (and romantic angst) save the world" show. I'll be passing on this one.

Do you watch the 100? I hear some support, but after one episode each, I was thinking that I would pass on that one and may watch this one (later, since I don't have SyFy cable). I guess magic is the appeal for me to put up with the angst.

Nope, for the same reasons. I'm not the target demo. There's just too much other great stuff to watch in this era of "peak TV", and they're not making any more hours in the day.

v/r,

It took me a few episodes to get into The 100. It's much less teen angsty then I thought it would be. Plus they do add some "adults" to even things out.

Yes, it's very well done, it could easily have been on Syfy instead of The CW as the teen/YA relationship plotlines are very minimal.

So that teacher survived the attack by the monster. That surprised me.

Still enjoying this series. Even though the main character can get on my nerves a little, I see that as him(actor) doing a good job with his character.

Yes, upon watching the scene in the first episode I automatically assumed he was dead, I figured he was just one of those characters you see in a pilot but they end up being killed off before the second episode. And was Anne Dudek(the investigator) ever seen in the first episode? I wonder if there was some re-tooling done between the pilot and the second episode.

I'm not surprised that question came up. I rewatched the pilot before the second episode. Confirmed as Ph8te posted, when he asked her about being the Paramedic

Don't know if I'll keep this one. Didn't like HP...don't like depressed college dude. If there's evidence that he becomes more competent and confident that may change, but I'll watch this thread to find out.

I don't lurk as much as I used to and I NEVER listen. Comes from being old and cynical.

That's some magic: The dude with the ability to instantly teleport himself--plus the vehicle he's in, plus passengers--anywhere. Imaginative writing I guess. Maybe next week they'll introduce a student with "Q-like" abilities--the Star Trek character with seemignly unlimited powers. -- John

Best part of this episode was young Jessica Alba. Hopefully she'll be in more scenes.

Her name on the show is Margo. Her real name is Summer Bishil. I agree she was looking good last episode.

I read all three books, so I am interested to see this adaptation. My girlfriend and I are in for the season.

The books were by no means classic literature, but the story was good, and it looks like the show realizes that and is taking liberties. I'm hopeful that it can find its feet. As with all world-building, they need to clearly define the rules of the world so that things like "magic teleporting car" don't seem out of place.

While I like the show, I'm finding it more difficult to like the lead characters, Quentin and Julia.

Clearly if the dude is going to magically remove his dad's brain tumor, and needs extra energy, he'll have to call on the FORCE. BTW, anyone know what "upstate-NY school"' they're shooting at? --- John.

(Note that I am only skimming the thread here because SyFy means I have to wait or pay, so I have only finished the first book and the preview chapter of the second)

The first book was exactly like that for me.

More safe than sorry on book spoiler tag:
Spoiler!
but I am not sure you are supposed to like them. Or maybe YA are supposed to relate to them ... implying I will probably want to put a boot up their 4th points of contact.

The pilot was shot in New Orleans in the "Round Table Club" and on the campus of Tulane University. See http://www.nola.com/tv/index.ssf/201...leans_pil.html and http://www.tulanehullabaloo.com/news...b5fcdd963.html

The rest of the series is being shot in Vancouver, with some scenes at UBC (the University of British Columbia). See http://yvrshoots.com/2016/02/renewed...for-magic.html

Episodes of The Magicians are available on the SyFy Web site within a day or two. When I missed an episode I used the SyFy plugin for Kodi to watch it in hidef with no advertisements. Unfortunately, the one I watched included English subtitles which were badly timed.

Thanks, but the website, Hulu, etc. generally require a SyFy cable provider login/subscription. I only have lifeline/basic cable to make the internet work. I could find one of "those" sites, but realistically if I thought it was worthwhile, I would go ahead and pay Amazon or VuDu (Haven, Defiance, and Doctor Who). Otherwise, I will just wait for it (Continuum, Dark Matter, Warehouse 13, etc.). I guess I did have to shell out for the last season of Warehouse 13 for some reason.

Since this generally means I'll wait-out the first season, hopefully this, The Expanse, and maybe Dark Matter won't pull a Sleepy Hollow, I wouldn't want to pay for that second season...
