'The Magicians' on Syfy

Quote:

The Magicians is based on Lev Grossman’s best-selling novels. The series centers on Quentin, a brilliant grad student chosen to attend
Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy, a secret upstate New York university specializing in magic. He and his 20-something friends soon
discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real – and poses grave danger to humanity.
The Magicians comes to Syfy in January 2016

Special sneak peek Wednesday December 16th 10/9c

So it's like a cross between Harry Potter and Twilight?

mr266 12-16-2015 08:15 AM

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll check it out.

Minus sparkly faces, and the addition of instances of the word "s**t", but yeah...

At least most of the characters don't look like they are in desperate need of a sandwich...

My DVR is set to record the sneak peak episode tonight. Now watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat.

I liked the first episode, seems to have some darkness and seriousness that something like the Librarians doesn't have. I'll be back for more in Jan.

I'm all in ... this looks great to me!;)

Waboman 12-17-2015 01:31 PM

I agree, guys. Enjoyed the pilot I did.

oink 12-17-2015 01:34 PM

Sort of a mash-up of Lewis Carroll + Harry Potter + Narnia.
Whatever the case, it was fun.:)

JoeNc 12-17-2015 02:21 PM

I agree, it was good, like keenan said, as long as it keeps its darkness/seriousness
I'll continue watching.
Glad it is more 'adult' orientated and not silly....

ended on an interesting note too.....

So I thought the headmaster was powerful. It turns out he really wasn't.

Yeah, he was no Dumbledore.

Sharp1080 12-17-2015 05:42 PM

"Eye" can see why he wasn't so powerful!

Enjoyed the intro, especially without commercials (SyFy needs to do this more). Even though I saw the connections to HP and other series, this seems to be on the darker side of things which interests me. Looking forward to the double episode (nice that we don't have to wait long for the next episode). Of SyFy keeps this up, I may need to expand my DVR.

This series is based off a very good book trilogy by the same name (although I felt the books run out of steam near the end).

They are taking significant liberties with the plot, however. One example being the books have the kids joining Brakebills for college, vs. "graduate school". I'm guessing that's to make the dark themes more palatable (which are prevalent throughout the books...it makes for interesting reading if you read them right after Harry Potter).

Because I still have GoT thread scars, no more spoilers unless people are interested.

I was expecting one of those SyFy crummy productions, and wow it turned out to be a gem. It's a fun show and has plenty of potential.

Keenan 12-18-2015 04:52 PM

The hope is that they'll keep up the quality of the production in the ensuing episodes.

XSSIVE 12-18-2015 07:55 PM

Glad I decided to give this one a shot, looks like it could have some potential.

steve1106 12-18-2015 10:06 PM

Wow. This was actually a good start for a SyFy series and I was sorry I watched it without the family.

taxman48 12-19-2015 05:11 PM

Local paper the NY Daily News panned it, saying its all smoke and mirrors:

Watched this. Was reasonably impressed with the production value. I'll be back.

However, the pilot felt sort of rushed / incomplete. Like they threw too much out there at once which left all of it a bit shallow. The after college visit Julia side story portion could have been left for a future episode allowing the other bits to be looked at a little deeper.

They're actually pulling Julia's story in from book two, as she more or less disappears for the rest of book one. But yeah they could have waited an episode or two before starting her story back up.

Amazon has free-to-buy pilots for Shannara and Magicians, and extended bonus material for Colony. Not sure if Prime-only but I don't think so...

Phantom Stranger 01-12-2016 02:06 PM

The pilot was one of the best I've seen on Syfy in several years. I know that isn't a high bar to clear but the production values and writing seemed on point. This is definitely an adult Harry Potter with bits of Narnia and other fantasy material meant to spice it up.
