Yes, but that's a qualifying heat race, not qualifying as most auto racing groups understand it. That approach is interesting, but it doesn't result in the absolute fastest possible lap for qualifying.

Unlike bicycles, auto racing tires have a very short "window" where they are the absolute fastest - one or two laps at most, beyond which time they get progressively slower. Meanwhile, cars burn off fuel at a rate sufficient to result in steadily increasing laptimes. Thus, a 100% maximum lap requires both near-empty fuel tanks and brand-new tires; a one-lap banzai run with fresh ultra-softs and just enough fuel to meet minimum weight entering the pit lane is the ideal setup. This is the dead opposite of a heat race situation, where the fuel weight drops as the tires degrade.

Reading about the last time F1 went there... it was not much of a success.

The combination of Vegas and F1 strikes me as a poor fit. And the very idea of swapping historic Monza for the desert gives me a headache.

Penske on IndyCar aero:

http://www.motorsport.com/indycar/ne...penske-682541/

Substitute "Formula 1" for "IndyCar", and most of his arguments are also a pretty good fit for F1. The solution to better racing in F1 is not MORE aero, it's less, but for some reasons, that seems to allude most of the decision makers in F1.

It keeps a significant number of people on the payroll, along with denying the obvious. The drivers have stated issues behind a car for quite sometime. The strange thing is over in MotoGP they are starting to complain about drafting behind the Ducati Desmosedici, which has aero winglets on the front fairings.

I recently saw that the winglets are now banned on MOTO2 and MOTO3 bikes.

As much as I would like to see another U.S. F1 race, Vegas bombed before and would probably bomb again. I had always hoped to see another race on the East Coast (too bad about N.J.). Selfish of me, being from N.Y., but I console myself by attending the Canadian F1 race.

Agreed. As a US resident, I am more likely to go to a Monza F1 race than a Vegas F1 race. In fact, I've been to many places in Italy, but I've never been to Vegas.

I honestly can't imagine why Monza would be cut. The podium ceremony alone is a good enough reason to keep it on the schedule.

Normal, periodic Bernie extortion of the old guard tracks. Seems like in recent years, Spa, Silverstone, Monza……they have all been rumored to be at risk.

F1 takes on gaming.
More than 30 pages of mods for three racing simulations, two of them licensed Formula One video games, have been taken down on the demand of F1's rights holder, enraging some in the sim racing community.
The mods were listed in a forum thread at RaceDepartment, a racing news and community portal, and concerned the racing games Automobilista, F1 2013 and F1 2014 on PC. Many of the mods updated the liveries and decal positions for real-world cars licensed to appear in the two F1 titles.

The sim racing site Pretend Race Cars inveighed bitterly against the move, calling it "a power tripping exercise on F1's part," though conceding the takedown demand was "technically justified from a legal standpoint." Formula One World Championship Limited owns the rights to the cars and teams participating in their championship series.
PRC noted that Codemasters' F1 series ships each year with a fictitious livery for the Williams team, and users manually edit the vehicle's design so that races conform to reality. F1's stance here effectively forbids that, though this would really only catch the racing body's attention if a mod was shared.
All of the mods appear to have been available for free, but F1's interest in taking them down has little to do with someone making money off their intellectual property, and probably more with making sure the latest version of its licensed game, F1 2015, is the only option for up-to-date liveries and racing teams.

Multiclass sports car racing has been producing a superior show to F1 for a long time. The worst ALMS race I attended was still more fun the best F1 race I attended.

That's because you did not come all the way down to Melbourne to watch the last F1 race.

Niki Lauda tells us that it was "most exciting grand prix that I have seen for three years at least......it was the best grand prix of this era."

It was rumoured the dominant champions of 2014 and 2015 held fire on its full performance potential over the winter, and Red Bull’s Helmut Marko charged even after Melbourne that Mercedes could actually have “lapped the field”.
The suspicion is that, amid the political goings-on, a close battle between Mercedes and Ferrari will calm suggestions the current ‘power unit’ era has been an abject failure.
But when asked if Mercedes was really worried about being beaten by Ferrari in Australia, F1 legend and team chairman Lauda insisted: “I was very worried.”
“We almost lost to them, did you not see it?” he is quoted by La Repubblica, whose reporter agreed that the gap between the two top teams in Melbourne appeared to be small.
“Ferrari threatened to win the race, there is no ‘but’ about it,” Lauda charged.
As for claims Mercedes is exaggerating the closeness of the gap for the sake of the show, he answered: “Rubbish. The truth is that there was no gap at all between the two cars. It was only the red flag that saved our life otherwise they would have won.
“It was the most exciting grand prix that I have seen for three years at least,” declared Lauda. “I think it was the best grand prix of this era.”
And we all know that we can trust Niki.
He knows what he is talking about.
In fact, he is almost as reliable and honest a straight shooter as Bernie.
