You are forgetting 5G wireless (AT&T's bread and butter)...it won't be long before there isn't a single person in the US that isn't "within reach". Not saying this is happening in the next couple of years...but it will be sooner rather than later. Satellites are VERY expensive (and risky). AT&T bought DirecTV for the distribution agreements (and customer base horsepower) not for it's satellite business.

It is almost assured that you will not find a DTV CSR who has the competence to recommend to you the best way to get you what you want to suit your particular needs.

the extra c61k is because the hs17 has no output

I suspect the R&D team for DTV is no longer active, so the HS-17 should have a shelf life for a number of years before anything else comes along. I think they had server in mind but didn't take into account all residential customer setups. I can't think of a technical reason why they couldn't include the output rather someone had the idea that the mini's fit best in today's setups of wall mounted TV's etc. So the HR design didn't streamline those setups etc. Just a guess.

guess more and wider ... see "HS17-100" thread at dbstalk; most likely new video compression standards kill the one box DVR, it would be easy to separate particular program [eg stream] from sat mux and route it to decompression [by any algo, any resolution, any color space, etc] to easy replacing/designed client/mini

i dont hink that was the reason
the form factor the hs17 is just stupid
if i put it where my current unit it, it will block part of the tv
it wont fit on any of the shelves.
so it would be on the floor, no other place

im sure my pets would never knock it over

Maybe like Steve Jobs "NeXT" case design and so on, thought it was going to revolutionize the industry, agreed it' silly, not rack friendly, not TV stand friendly, but it's floor friendly or shelf. The footprint could be smaller for sure, no idea but I am don't doubt the HS-17 development team has been disbanded anyway. Project was probably in the works 5 years ago as well, such a long development cycle with an ever changing industry such as AT&T taking over.

Any tips for getting on demand to work outside of the usual box resets? Box says I’m connected, I can use the apps and the Speedtest shows max bandwidth. Waited 24 hours from resets...nothing.

I assume you are talking about parental controls? On Demand isn't all pay per view. It's also for watching a program you might have missed. DirecTV Cinema is the paid movies. So your comment about parental controls doesn't apply here. I assume that's what you were trying to infer... You're not the easiest to understand.

On hour genie, do a double red button reset.

1. Press the red button
2. As soon as the blue screen comes up, press the red button again
3. After the genie is back up and running, do a RBR on client box (if you are using one) as well

Anyone having issues tonight? All my locals are very bad, freezing and dropouts, unwatchable "cable" channels seem fine. Checked signal levels, all 90's or better, thought the last wind storm might have messed up the dish, but no.

Mine were okay Wed. night; but I had those problems Tuesday night. They must be rotating the issue between geographical areas. :-)

Yes, everything was fine on Wed. night. Very weird, anything I recorded Tues. was unwatchable, last night's recordings were solid.

Signal issues, upstate SC

Gorgeous day, sunny, clear, 68F ... local channel drops out, audio and video.

Symptoms have occurred multiple times over the last few days, different, but AFAIK, only on locals.

Viewing satellite "meters", all show green and good. I see others elsewhere are seeing similar issues; what can be done to help?

call DTV CSR and complain - more complains, more attention from DTV

I've learned not to do that - the standard response is "we'll send someone out to look at your dish" or something to that effect. The problem is never on their end, unless it's a major outage. That is why I usually post in the forums and see what is going on.

I also check this site, look at the map and read some comments, look like there are local issues right now...

But...since you are saying you have blanking on a 930D with DirecTV (and that is with a C61K correct?)...it very well could be that this problem is more widespread and many (myself included) assumed it was related to Sony's DV update since I have only been looking at X1E TV threads (930E, 940E, Z9D, A1E) looking for the problem. So if your 930D just recently received a firmware update and you now have blanking the problem may be associated with some modification that was made elsewhere within the OS of the TV.

Edit: Of course we could also be talking about entirely different things. I am referring to the situation where randomly while watching an SDR program on DirecTV (although it is not limited to DirecTV...but it seems to be the most prevalent), the video "blanks out" for a brief moment looking like a almost instantaneous black screen inserted. The duration of each blanking event can also vary but most are pretty much split second and the events are very random following no particular pattern.

I have suspected DTV was causing the blinking problem for me. I have only had my SONY 65Z9D for three weeks. But on my old SONY 55HX929 for the last 6 months or so I have had the blinking problem. I had an old DTV HR22. I just got done (yesterday) installing a HR54 the 4K client and dish. I hope that helps with the blinking problem. I needed a new set up any way...

I should add my blinking problem hasn't involved a black screen. It's been a disruption in the picture lasting a split second. The only way I can describe it would be as if you pulled out the plug while the TV was playing but could insert it fast enough so the screen doesn't go black (if that made any sense). Or like a blink with your eyes....

(edit) For me the problem was a lot worse on certain channels. Like espn with baseball. Switching over to a MLB package channel same game. No blinking. TNT with basketball also caused blinking. So did HGTV & DIY. But those 2 channels I have not had a problem with in a couple weeks....

In the Land of the Blind. The One Eyed Man is King......

Anthem AVM60. Oppo 205. Krell KAV 1500. Krell Resolution 1. Krell Resolution C. Paradigm Studio 60V5. Paradigm Prestige 15B. SVS PB16 Ultra. Sony XBR-65Z9D....

Below was posted by DirecTV on the AT&T Community Forums today, 20 April in the New Guide and Menu thread:

DirecTV posted this update today ....

Update: 4/20/18 - The latest update I have for everyone is that it looks like the first improvements will begin rolling out as early as later next week. The first changes will be increasing the font size, as well as changing the font color and contrast. Please note this is only the first update, so there is more to come. Also, as with any major update, times and dates are subject to change. However, I promised I would share information as soon as I had it, so I wanted to let you all know. Please keep the feedback coming.

I had 3 recordings that I deleted after viewing what I could view, and anther live ... all "locals" but I don't know which. downdetector has several reports similar over the same time frame. My locals are WYFF (NBC), WSPA (CBS), WLOS (ABC). We also have Fox and PBS (and others) but I didn't watch or record anything on them that had the issue.

I got DirecTV because I was mad at Charter Spectrum ... grass is always greener on the other side ... when my contract is up, I'll go back to the cable, if for no reason to get enough internet speed to stream. ATT's internet is very slow compared ...
