I know this. Reply was in response to numerous complaints, comments and talks of leaving the ATT TV. There is no Directv anymore (in name or as a good product with appropriate support team)-mods might want to think about changing thread title. If it’s wanted by the mods, I won’t post my story to conclusion.

Just got off an online chat with DirecTV about getting me setup with their 4K. Was hoping they could simply send me the new receiver and I would install it. Nope. Apparently that's too easy. So the install is next week. Hate having someone's grub hooks messing with my system. Looking forward to the Masters in 4K HDR tho.

I agree. I could upgrade my system myself so easily. It seems like no matter what you want to do it requires a truck roll. They could save themselves a lot of headaches if they offered self installs again. Oh well.......

Yep. Now I’m beholden to their install window for a simple client swap. No wonder prices keep increasing.

If you're upgrading to 4K, it's not just a simple client swap. You might need to have your LNB switched out.

If it's just replacing a DVR with the same model, they typical will drop ship those.

Agreed....I had to get a new LNB, plus the guy knew his stuff and did a very smooth, quick setup...was impressed, i.e., thought I could do it myself, but might have had trouble....

My last two installs after moving into new homes were very impressive. The tech the first time was really good and the second time I had four of them working together in the late afternoon and they were even better. They all came from their last jobs in the area to help their buddy finish before dinnertime. Plus it was 108 degrees out so they shortened the suffering.

Yes, it seems the independent contractors that do the DIRECTV work in my area (Southern New England), are very good and knowledgeable; I'm reasonably tech savvy, but let them handle the DIRECTV "kludgy" signal path/wiring/networking......

After the firmware update a couple weeks ago, I have no problems with my Genie 2 and 2 C61k's. I would not go back to my previous HR44 and HR24.

I've had installers both ways. Some you can't say enough good things about them, and then others couldn't or wouldn't dither a dish. Some of them take a lot of pride in getting the best signal they can, and then the others if they get a signal that's good enough. It's all in the peaking of the dish. The rest of it is just repeating the same wiring, or new wiring. The last thing is the call in and clean up.

Tipping helps. In Detroit, the guy gave me his cell number so I could just call him when I needed anything. Dish peaked as good as it gets. And I wound up with some free gear.. multiswitches and so forth.

I understand you prefer to have separate DVRs, but that doesn't mean there are issues with a Genie 2 setup. Myself and many others here are very satisfied with it.

I just don't want people coming here for advice and reading your posts thinking there is something wrong with the Genie 2 setups.

if you have ever had a unit go bad you dont want all your eggs in one basket

i have had 2 hdd's fail over the years.

with a genie 2 setup i would have been without service for days while a replacement was sent out

with a tuner in each unit, i can just move them around
it doesnt have to be a dvr. an h25 would work just as well as a second receiver and client

add in that each mini takes a tuner away from recording and people with 5 or 6 tvs lose the dvr functionality if those other tvs are in use.

the entire system is flawed, and its often a downgrade if you go by tuners and recording ability

Do you have 2 refrigerators? Directv no longer manufactures receivers because of cost. The HR24 was a great receiver 8 years ago but has become long in the tooth. My HS17 and 2 c61k's have performed flawlessly. The mini's are here to stay. The HR54 was a bandaid (no 4k output). The only option for 4K upgrade is a HS17 and c61k's for each tv.

So, redundancy is not always necessary and sometimes it can be wasteful instead of efficient.

For example, take a look at your computer keyboard. If it's typical, you have two Shift keys and a Caps Lock key to make letters capitalized when you type. Since you only type in lower case, you'll never need those keys and they are wasting space!

A few weeks ago I was experiencing momentary black/skip about every minute or two. I changed up the chain of handshakes in my process stream and it went away. Turned out that the C61 and one of my components didn't like each other; I think. Also cleaned up my wiring and that could have fixed it too. So you never know.. My rec is to change wires and see if that makes a difference.

Try Genie 2 reboot by pressing red button on side/back. Take 5-10 minutes to come back and refresh everything.

Installer/tech just left. It was a simple swap of one client for a 4K client. Took less than 5 minutes. However, it took over 30 minutes trying to close out. He had to call DirecTV twice. 5 minutes for the swap, 30 minutes for the paperwork. Lol. Better him than me, I guess. I have the client sitting on top of my Oppo. He was a little rough putting the new 4K client back on top of it. Made me cringe. I was like, c'mon, this is a collectors item now. At the end of the day, I have 4K. Bring on The Masters.
I WANT MORE and Terminader like this.
