Marvel's 'Legion' on FX

The Marvel series is based on a character from the “X-Men” comic books.

The eight-episode first season of Legion will air on FX in early 2017

Quote:
Legion follows David Haller, a troubled young man who may be more than human. Diagnosed
as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange
encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears
and visions might be real.

So Marvel is now spreading their seed to cablenets like the FX Network? Is there no end to their thirst for media domination?

Soon they will conquer Disney and Sony and rule the world. We'll need some DC Superheroes to save us.

This looks really good to me. I'm looking forward to this show. And just for Archi so Marvel doesn't take over any more cablenets we'll have herr Eichorst infest Feige with the strain.

2017 might just be long enough for my eyes to stop rolling at another superhero show. It might also make me more optimistic about watching another after going through the diminishing returns that the rest of them ultimately rely on to keep them going; as the creators flip-flop around trying to keep the story straight and the villains fresh and worthy enough.

Things always look cool and exciting when they start ...

Yes, shiny new objects always look cool and exciting, but for me, who is just about about ready to dump all of The CW's superhero shows this new one from an "edgier" channel will certainly get a look-see from me.

I think the genre is starting to become saturated. I've been paring back my superhero shows, having had enough of 'Arrow' & 'Flash'. Gotham is hanging on by a thread. This one looks pretty derivative. Like you guys, I am intrigued that it's on FX. That would bring it closer to the Netflix Marvels in tone and style, minus the f-bombs and occasional nudity. Which, I suspect, is the whole idea.

I pulled the plug on Arrow after this last episode. I think I'd rather watch a Peppa Pig marathon than another episode of Arrow. But y'all know I'm a glass is half full guy and Legion looks good to me. I'm in.

One of the things that is not exciting me about this is the fact it's another regular-looking hero with psychic abilities. It's the go-to power for any show looking to save money on effects and it's a trope that has been done so much on television now on so many, many shows that I'm not sure anything fresh can be done with the idea.

That's the underlying problem with superhero TV. Money. With the inability to have a unique and effects-reliant hero on screen each week and so many of them now you eventually have to keep going to the same old cheap bag of tricks. Dudes in masks with martial arts skills. Throwing around people by squinting at them. Standing in front of bullets and flinching as they bounce off. Holding out your hand occasionally so the FX team can add in a super-powered beam ray that is used so infrequently it makes it unnecessary.

At this point I'd take a remake of Hulk just because he's green and can be on screen for a long time. Except with a slightly bigger dude as Hulk and less scary hair.

Agreed. I dumped Flash, Shield and Gotham this year, really can't take much more at the mainstream network level. But I'd love to see FX riff on something like Deadpool (not that it will happen), and maybe this series will be good enough on an edgier network to be worth a watch.

The Legion character is an Omega level mutant and considered quiet possibly the most powerful mutant ever.

Curious to see how they do this in the show and where they go with it.

It can be a kludge, but it can also be done brilliantly. David Tenant's Kilgrave was one of the most intriguing and disturbing villains in TV history, and he never needed special effects.

The Marvel Netflix shows in general have been great examples of what you can do with writing and character development without spending big bucks on special effects.

Interesting first show. Its going to be somewhat confusing for a while. Lots of references to things although they might just be fun references: Syd Barrett? Clockworks Psychiatric Hospital?

Liked Aubrey Plaza's character while she lasted. I think she is going to continue in some respects.

What a jumbled mess. I barely made it through the episode.

It seemed as if it was aimed at people who know the character from the comic books, but I've never read any. I knew nothing about the main character going in and expected at least some cursory information so I could grasp what was going on, but got nothing.

I did a quick skim of the wiki after the show and now it actually makes some sense. I wish I'd done a bit of research before watching the first episode. The wiki's description of the character's ability actually sounds like it might be interesting, so I'm going to stick with the show for a bit to see if it takes off.

My daughter and I got pulled in within five minutes and ended up watching it with commercials which is something we never do. She was lost as to the character's background so I gave her the short version (his father, comics background and powers) and X-Men Age of X "book" to learn more about the character.

We really enjoyed the first episode and will tune in again.

Just a few things to know before going into this show, though i too have never heard of the character before.
Do not get high before watching, as it will surely ruin your buzz. Also be aware of a nasty gross looking troll with blazing eyes, that pops up from time to time, for some unknown reason. he is one scary mo-fo.

Also, if anyone is on Thorazine, take it before watching this show, or you may have a flashback of being inside once again.
