Van Helsing on Syfy HD

Who knows, it might be good it might be terrible. Either way there is a commercial free sneak preview of Episode #1 on Syfy Sunday night(7/31/16) at 10:01 pm ET after Sharknado 4.

I was expecting a period supernatural show kind of like the movie. Looks like just another cheap and lazy modern show with some demonic dressing and post apocalyptic angst to add to the list.

Pity, a period show with steampunk influences could have been both different and had potential. Instead I envision lost of unwashed people wandering through the woods and abandoned warehouses, shooting bad guys that look conveniently human most of the time.

Usually the pilot is the one that pulls out all the stops to lure you in. Van Helsing didn't even bother with one stop.

Set almost entirely in one building of about three rooms, barely any action, insignificant monsters and effects and characters so flat they could have been slid under the door. Another sombre, unfun and lazy B-movie effort from Syfy.

Stargate used to get a lot of flack because every world they visited appeared to be a medieval village but at this point that would be a refreshing change for Syfy shows. At least SG made an effort to have some fantastical variety instead of just pointing the camera down the corridor of whatever disused location they can find.

I also said it might be terrible and I'm definitely leaning heavily on the terrible side after that wasted 45 minutes. How does something like that make it to air? I expected a little camp, this seemed lifeless and nobody was likeable, it was terribly disappointing.

Camp would have been a big improvement.

I really miss the fun adventure shows Syfy used to have. Even if they suffered from being too silly at times, a sci-fi romp with fun characters, epic action and witty banter would be a nice change. Everything has to be grimdark now.

At least there is Ash VS Evil Dead.

Watched this last night. While the pilot wasn't the best, I'll stick with it awhile longer. Might need a couple episodes to find its groove.

Have you not seen what else is on SyFy and other networks? many of their shows are on the cheap side. I saw the pilot and wasn't impressed. but I'll give it a couple more episodes.

Well, honestly Syfy has been doing a lot better lately as far as the series they have going. I will also give it a few more chances, the promos actually look like it might be decent, but that pilot was pretty meh.

I had missed the original pilot airing in August, but caught up Friday with the two Episode "premiere". While the first episode was a bit of a mess, I thought they did a nice job providing the backstory in Episode 2. I'm in for at least a few to see where it goes.

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't watch the pilot in August when I first recorded it. I doubt I would've stuck it out for the next. A lot of the first episode didn't make any sense without the context of the backstory. I'm all for mystery, twists, and gradual reveals, but to watch the pilot episode without context made for too many "what the hell is going on" developments.

I'm in, though. It's basically The Walking Dead with vampires. And at least 10 times more interesting than Fear the Walking Dead so far.

Yep, good show.

Loved the use of In the Year 2525 at the end of the episode. 1969 was the year that record companies started releasing 45s in stereo. My copy of that song is from WPGC in Washington DC, where I was in the service and was taking photos for the radio station every now and then. Many DJ copies of 45s had stereo on one side and mono on the flip side.

Got all caught up, we are digging this show. Sure it has issues but I like the concept and where they are going so far. Fun ride for something made for the SyFy channel.

Ain't that the truth. And, they already got Vanessa taken captive by vampires. It seems a little early to go down this overly used plot path. Per the preview, next week it looks like we're getting the hostile base takeover episode courtesy of their rescues.

I'm caught up and enjoying this as much as any other new show right now -- and certainly more than the shows I've dropped this year (Arrow, Flash, Supergirl). My only complaint would be the lack of humor. I'm not really a horror fan per se, but I do really enjoy these kinds of shows when they don't take themselves too seriously, like Buffy and Tru Blood. You can still have plenty of suspense and scares and gore amid a few laughs, or just some witty dialogue. I guess that's simply not what this show is, so it will take some very good story lines and interesting characters to keep me engaged.

From the Hot off the Press thread:

TV Notes (Cable)

‘Van Helsing’ Renewed For Second Season By Syfy
By Nellie Andreeva, Deadline.com - Oct. 14, 2016

Four episodes into Van Helsing‘s freshman run, the new action-horror series has been renewed for a second season by Syfy. Production on the 13-episode second season is expected to begin January 2017. The announcement was made by series producer Nomadic Pictures and distributor Dynamic Television.

“We have a wonderful and terrifying road ahead planned for Vanessa, her allies and her enemies,” said Van Helsing writer/showrunner Neil LaBute. “I think this is a world and a story that can be sustained for many years and I am inspired to do so thanks to Syfy’s obvious trust and commitment in the storytellers, cast and crew.”

After a catastrophic volcano eruption, the last remaining underground vampires rise up through a dark, ash-filled sky to overtake America. Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton), a descendant of the legendary line of vampire hunters, awakens from a three-year coma to discover that she’s not only immune to the bloodthirsty predators – but also has the ability to make them human again. Van Helsing is a re-imagination of the timeless Dracula brand and stars Overton, Jonathan Scarfe, Christopher Heyerdahl, David Cubitt, Vincent Gale, Rukiya Bernard, Trezzo Mahoro, Aleks Paunovic, Laura Mennell, Tim Guinee and Paul Johansson. Episode 5 of the series’ first season airs tonight.

Van Helsing is produced by Nomadic Pictures, which also serves as the studio, with Syfy as co-producer. Executive producers are Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev from Nomadic Pictures, showrunner/writer LaBute, Simon Barry, Evan Tyler (Industry Works), Dave Brown and Zadoc Angell (Echo Lake Entertainment), as well as Daniel March (Dynamic Television). Dynamic Television is handling the worldwide distribution for the series, excluding first run U.S. television and Canada.
