Designated Survivor on ABC and Netflix

Designated Survivor ABC HD Sep 21, 2016

It's not 24, but it's not all that much of a departure, either. Kiefer Sutherland returns to TV as a low-level cabinet member (the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development) who suddenly becomes president after a terrorist attack during the State of the Union address kills everyone else in the line of succession. Not only is he unprepared for his new position, but he must also face an immediate military showdown with Iran, which is threatening action amidst the chaos in America. Kal Penn, Maggie Q, and Natascha McElhone also star. The series comes from screenwriter David Guggenheim (Safe House).

Well, in the teaser, Kiefer looks like somewhat of a dork .. I'm sure the plot involves him growing into the job ..

We'll have to see but I can't help but think he will be more hands on than previous POTUS's.

This looks like a combination of his two basic character roles.

So I expect it to be ... "DAMMIT! JAKE? JAKE?"

Greatest mother of all crossovers....

Bauer (Who was out of the country at the time of the attack) shows up to help Kirkman.
Kirkman grows into the role of President, and Bauer guests frequently to help him out.

Fairly well paced first episode and it kept me interested, but I'm not sure how they can keep the premise going beyond one season without it just becoming a version of Commander in Chief. A movie or mini series about a conspiracy and the trials of an amateur president would seem a better fit. I'm willing to give Kiefer some leeway though so I'll stick with it for a while to see how far the conspiracy goes.

Kirkman gave such an out of place Jekyll and Hyde performance with the Iranian ambassador however I'm not ruling out that he had everyone killed.

I got sucked in, was not intending to watch. I guess I'll watch again to see where things go, my take is a home grown terror plot. I think the General is a red herring at this point. Who knows Kirkman may the a sleeper and actively involved.

I wonder if the show will just stick with Washington turmoil or expand on the fact that every state senator and representative probably needs replacing too?

That seems kinda important at some point.

Looks like the new president needs to quickly replace his staff and military advisers, including the nut-job four-star general. Guess the general's co-conspirator is the W.H. chief of staff. Please, not an entire season prying bad guys from endless federal departments. (Shades of '64's Seven Days in May). Could become a nice series, though. -- John

Good pace to the first episode. Not sure if additional episodes will have the same pace. Pilot episodes are packed full of action to sell the show, but tend to get really bogged down as the writers have to stretch everything into 22 episodes. We'll see. Good, so far.

Enjoyed the premiere and will stick around, but couldn't stop thinking "Jack Bauer would round 'em up in 24 hours."

I thought it was an excellent start .. and, if memory serves, Season One is a 13 episode Season ..

although the rebellious son side story was a little off beat, this looks like an Everyman Guy is given the keys to the Oval Office and we will watch him evolve .. I'm definitely in for now, anyway ..

I hope they dial back the "cliche" factor on the General/Joint Chief of Staff in future episodes. In an otherwise very believable pilot, his behavior was off-the-charts in terms of "that wouldn't happen in real life...would it?" attitude.

I was underwhelmed by the pilot. I'll give it a couple more episodes before pulling the plug.

Would be so much cooler if he was still playing Jack Bauer character in this new show! I mean....going from CTU to President makes sense.

The actor playing the general must specialize in playing nut jobs since he was Frank, the nutty hunter in season 7 of Supernatural.

Overall, I liked the pilot. Will continue to watch.
