I hope the documentaries they do count as films for the new format and not just the road trips. Stuff like the history of Ford cars in this last episode, the one on Senna, Jim Clark, James' film on the 917 this season, etc. are quality programing to me. I'd rather see those than a road trip episode like the one of them in RVs in Nevada this series.

Especially emotional ending for Clarkson since he's been doing this since 1989 starting on the old Top Gear having been in motoring entertainment for at least 30 years.

Clarkson on Top Gear and love of James and Richard:

Really, what made Top Gear the most special was the trio of Clarkson, Hammond and May, each of their personalities working together or against each other. It was a perfect formula. Grand Tour continued that for a little while longer and now just in specials. Unfortunately, Top Gear really hasn't found that same magic. What they need are three personalities that blend well together. It won't ever replace Clarkson, Hammond and May but they have to start somewhere. Two new people replacing Matt Leblanc and Rory Reid, we'll see.

At first I thought he was faking it but after 30 seconds or so, I do believe it was honest and truly an emotional thing for him.

Yeah, it definitely was. His departure from 2002's debut of the revamped Top Gear which was mostly his creation with producer Wilman, was an open wound of sorts having to leave his "baby" behind. The continuation of these guys onto Grand Tour meant it could carry on with mostly the same format, but now the studio parts are over as he feels the time is right to take a step back so I can imagine there's a lot of emotion going on there saying goodbye to what they've done for so long and maybe a little guilt too for letting down the fans. Did you hear that one guy when the news broke: "Don't Stop!" or something like that.

At least they're not completely finished carrying on with specials. One day it really will come to an end, at least they're letting us down gently.

A behind the scenes feature on editing with producer Andy Wilman:
