I don't live in UK so I get the 1080 60i version.

I'm pretty sure my TV was reporting 2160p50 from Amazon Prime (I'm in the USA). I'll check tonight. The only way you'll get 60i is if you live in a 60Hz country that is showing it on an actual TV channel. Might be one? Not the US though. The 50 to 60Hz conversions are obvious and ugly to me (Ie on PBS Masterpiece theater), though the process has gotten better. I know Netflix shows everything at its native refresh rate.

ETA: My mistake I think. You meant TG not GT. If you watch on BBC-A, yeah its a framerate conversion to 60i which considerably drops the quality.

BBC America is 60i, the only way I've ever seen TG. How it's filmed isn't relevant unless you're watching it in the original format.

Top Gear is mastered 1080i25 (aka 1080/50i) with most of the 'film' segments having been shot 1080/25p (so they have a 'film' look) - though there will be some off-speed stuff conformed to 25p. The studio items (and for most series the 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' laps) are shot 1080i25 native (i.e. 1080/50i native) with 50Hz motion - which is much smoother.

If you are watching in the US or another 60Hz (formerly NTSC or PAL 60 - aka Brazil) territory then you will be watching a conversion. This can do some quite odd things to 25p - interpolating motion artefacts >25Hz motion that 50Hz viewers won't see with a regular 2:2 25p to 50i transfer.

Grand Tour is shot 2160p - and I think 23.976p - for everything. The studio has the 'film look' judder. (I guess it could be 25p - but I'd expect Amazon to go 23.976p for a worldwide show)

Quite a lot of us ARE watching it in the original format...

Top Gear is shot 1080/50i and 1080/25p - though some audiences will be watching a 60i conversion (likely via Alchemist or similar For.A FRC)

All of which I already know, but my review is based on what I view at which is 60i for US. If I lived overseas I would talk about the 50i broadcast.

Another good episode this week. Two in a row, hope they keep it up. Just get rid of the stupid celebrity bit and I would be happy.

Track segment was good, tent segment and conversation street were good. celebrity bit was still a waste and the film segment was good.

Is The Grand Tour too popular for Amazon ? I tried to watch it last night around 8pm (EST) and the picture quality was horrible. I'm not talking about SD quality either, but much worse. We have 60 Mb/s internet and I did a speed test after I stopped the stream and got 60 Mb/s on the nose (from Netflix's fast.com test site).

It happened to me as well. I was attempting to watch the UHD feed and it looked awful.

Watched it this evening, all was well.

----------------

As for the episode, it was great. I laughed out loud at what seemed like half the episode. My wife did as well. She acts like she doesn't watch but she was and laughing right along with me.

This week was very funny and James in the river made me laugh a lot, but only reinforced my opinion that the show is trying too hard with Top Gear-style gimmicks. Go to a location. Put the three of them in any cars traveling around that country. Some studio banter. That's the show.

It seems like they are scaling back on the useless parts but they should just get rid of them completely. The celeb gag feels like an overlong way to have a payoff in the last episode in which a celebrity actually turns up at the studio for whatever reason. If that's the case I still don't think it will be worth it.

At this point I would be fine losing The American too. Staggeringly unfunny. The show could lose the lap board and test track as well and I wouldn't miss it. You would gain the same insight just racing two cars at a track local to the area.

The things they do aren't "Top Gear" bits, they're Clarkson/Hammond/May bits. They have every right to do them. Everyone knows this is really just "Top Gear 2.0" (or whatever version is suitable based on when they took over TG).

I completely agree about the stupid celebrity bit. I thought they might do it for a couple as a joke, but now it's downright lame.

Comedy test driver, a test track and the lap board are Top Gear Bits. Which is why Top Gear still has them.

For some reason the show thinks it needs those. It doesn't. The show only needs CHM. If they are not actually involved in a segment the show can dump it. At this point they are just hanging on to a formula they do not need and already exists elsewhere.

Suspect the reality is that shooting at the same track has some major health and safety benefits. The long shadow of Richard's terrible crash still hangs over them I think.

I had not been aware of Richard Hammond's terrible 2006 crash in a jet car until I Googled it after reading your post. He was lucky to survive.

I got behind on the show but watched Episode 3 earlier today and have started Episode 4. I continue to love the guys' schtick and the 4K HDR video is startlingly beautiful. I like it so much, I can even live with the Dead Celebrity of the Week nonsense.

What I have taken away from The Grand Tour so far is that the rebooted version of Top Gear, starring Chris Evans, was truly bad.

I'm very happy with this show overall. The three guys have such chemistry just like they did when they were on Top Gear. The celebrity death thing...for some reason I found it somewhat funny in episode 4. Maybe it will get so ridiculous that it will be charming. The American driver is terrible though! He's not funny, and his personality really annoys me. If they lost him and just had more of the guys driving it would be perfect. I'll keep watching and hoping for more seasons. This show is why I got amazon prime.

That car was a POS. American drag racers can go that speed in a 1/4 mile with 10 times the safety devices. Electric, diesel, and even motorcycle vehicles go faster than Richard did in a "jet" car. Good for them that they're in the US.

Safety devices were not the problem. Someone not checking the tires for a nail was the problem.

Some of the biggest advancements in motorsports safety come into play after a crash has begun. That thing didn't even have a HANS device.

Enjoyed the 4th episode, I lold more than a few times. While I agree on their track driver (could deal with just silence), it's more about the results. The celebrity bit is so quick, that it is quickly forgotten.

I too have easily tolerated the Celebrity of the Week silliness because each segment is short. I even enjoyed The American this week. When he was driving the horrible BMW and said, "BMW, British -Motor - Works," I howled.

Mike Skinner isn't even that exceptional of a driver by professional standards. Or from the South. Which makes his character even more dumb than he is actually portrayed.

Rosberg just retired, Amazon should get him on board. Then at least he can just be intentionally dismissive of all cars for the legitimate reason they are not F1 cars.

I thought it was a decent episode, but the eco-car thing was a bit silly. When the did the electric car in TG, it was something that was actually usable (although ridiculous). But these things had no chance of really reaching their destinations in tact. But I have to say the GT3/M4 clip was the best "review" so far.

From every interview I've ever seen, Jenson Button is far more comfortable and personable on camera than Rosberg. I'd honestly be a bit surprised if JB doesn't end up in front of a camera somewhere.

Wasn't he rumored to be up for a Top Gear role?

Rosberg said he wants to go to Hollywood, so this would be a way for him to get involved even if it involves driving around some weird track in the middle of England on camera.

In any case either would be a better choice. They cannot be any less funny and they are both actually used to driving around corners turning both left and right.

Yeah, then he got another years drive at McLaren. I seem to recall him doing a segment with C Evans last season though.

If I thought that Rosberg retired from F1 because he really thinks he has a future in Hollywood, I would have advised him not to quit his day job. Rosberg has the charisma of a tomato.

lol

Yeah Jenson would be perfect. Extremely likable right off the bat, and a great speaker with a nice dry wit. Some of his radio transmissions this year were legitimately funny. He'd have to want to though, he sure doesn't need the money.
