Episode 5 was good overall. Didn't care for celebrity bit again and the bit with weighing the cars.

No test track, lap board or American. Did anyone miss them? I didn't.

The rest of the episode had plenty of car content and general bantering, and that's all the show needs. Three guys in cars annoying each other in nice locations.

Still think the "tour" aspect is pointless. It makes for fun trivia in the studio but I would have actually liked to see some driving around Rotterdam. The North Africa stuff was good though and I did enjoy the constant berating of Jeremy and the Alfa. I thought the weigh scale was good too because it seemed like a genuinely unscripted disaster which was quite funny.

Batlleships was a good idea but it went on slightly too long.

all that could be net congestion between you and AWS and geting a different browser page selection from all that .... or something else but the HDR is a decent production

^^^^^^^Maybe not .... I just spun up ep.1 and no TV browser page HDR identifier but it shoved my Sony into HDR mode and its playing HDR maybe its an ep. 1 thing and the rew/play /pause control pop up says HDR - Ultra HD

I thought the Battleship sendoff was pointless and dumb, personally. But they've always had skits like that.

Some okay/good moments and the gift segment was quite funny but the show felt like it had a lot of filler this week.

The car sequences were good - except the continuing presence of The American - but the chocolate test was a waste of time (not even Finnish chocolate for some local flavor) and I'm not surprised Hammond's ice cream comments are under fire. I just couldn't understand why it was even mentioned. It wasn't funny, just a very awkward tangent that made no sense other than just coming across as slightly homophobic. Even more dumb by the fact we know they all like ice cream (like you know, almost every person on the planet) and have seen them eat it on the show.

Not up to the usual Christmas standards. The show doesn't really appear to be making a lot of use of the additional budget because it's basically just Top Gear without guests. With the usual amount if good features and bad features. If that tent is the major cost it is not paying off in any way.

Yes - his BBC Four and BBC Two stuff independent of Top Gear/The Grand Tour (and which appear to be continuing post Top-Gear) are always well worth a watch. I'm not a huge TG/GT fan - but love his other stuff.

Yeah... I've never been more jealous of anyone in my life. That was a great segment in a very good episode. My only complaint would be that Ford GT vs Ferrari P3 segment should've been given its own entire hour. Its one of the best stories in sports history IMO.

The Namibia special was pretty good. 1st part was a little slow, but the second part had more in it. Not the most exciting or entertaining "special", but solid. I personally really liked the old Africa special. But there really isn't a lot to do in Namibia. Just a lot of desert. But dear god was it gorgeous in 4K hdr. Stunning quality.

Definitely on par with previous specials. Not great, but entertaining enough. I agree the first part was the lesser, with just desert and desert and more desert. It's more difficult to hide the staged sequences too when you can see them following the same tracks from earlier runs. There were plenty of funny moments on both though and they didn't need any staged bits to make the reactions feel real.

The specials are more in keeping with the show moniker too. At least this episode felt like a tour and not just the same old show with one extra letter in the acronym.

Watching this made me think they should use the specials as the basis for next season. Just pick adjacent countries each episode and drive across one to the next like a version of Long Way Around/Down. They could pitch the studio tent at the beginning of each drive for news and local banter and introduce the cars they will use. For fun one of them is randomly chosen to drive a car with local history and the other two get to decide what it is. Depending on the country it enables them to use road, track and terrain segments as well.

I agree. although Clarkson and his peeps aren't everyone's cup of tea, they tickle me to death. Better yet, the show looks beautiful in UHD HDR. I look forward to each new episode

Random mixed bag this week. The NSX and Excellent were good segments but the electric gym felt like filler and something unused from Man Lab (and might have made a good show at full length) and the bug out vehicle like an extra from the Top Gear Apocalypse special with some military goofing.

Plus the semi-regular pointless features.

Since it was announced Dunsfold is being sold I've put on my foil hat and started thinking the only reason the show has a test track segment is so they can sell it back to Top Gear for next season.

Catching up on the last few episodes (have the latest to go), and they were the best yet. Although the ending of the special was a little over the top, in general it reminded me of what made the original TG so great. Just three idiots doing stupid things in cars. If you had it in 4K HDR, the scenery was just fantastic (something missing from the start of the season). Hopefully last Friday's (and this Friday's) episode will be just as good.

I remember being warned about this episode by Clarkson after the special forces waste of time. It wasn't as bad as that and the episode started out well but I was bored long before the end. Felt more like a holiday trip on Amazon's dime.

The segments that were a waste of time before were still a waste of time. The American, celebrity stunt, the same dumb fake fight they had before ...

This was one time I actually hoped there would be payoff to the celebrity joke and Brian Johnson would actually be a guest. He was always fun on TG, so yet again wasted potential.

The trimaran was cool. They should have had a feature on that. Maybe have everyone racing the trimaran or at least just have got them onboard for a ride and a look around.

The Celebrity Death has really run its course now. The problem is the BBC said they can't interview stars and put them around a track as it would be too similar to their old show. So when you look at it that way, at least they're having some fun getting back at the BBC. Better get used to it because they will NEVER have a star on the show for an interview or around the track bit. Not going to happen.

Really, I don't see how the rest of the show isn't the same as Top Gear. They have a studio with an audience, they talk about cars, they make films about cars, reviews, a test track, challenges, races. It's a car show, after all. There's going to be some similarities.

The other major issue still and this has been mentioned before is that the films don't take place in the tent location's country. It would be better if they filmed those segments in the country they're visiting and aired them in the same episode. Really, timing wouldn't be an issue. They don't have to show the films in the tent that week and shouldn't, just to keep things secret until the final finished episode is released.

I for one actually liked "celebrity brain crash this week". That was good fun with the football versus soccer thing* Of course I would've liked it better hand Brian Johnson actually been interviewed. They can still do interviews if they like, they just can put them in a car on track and compare their times with other celebs.

*Trivia: It wasn't that long ago that it was called soccer even in Britain. And the term football originated as a term for ball games played on foot, rather than on horseback (probably).

They don't need to put them on the track. Brian Johnson was on TG before in his awesome Bentley and let May take it for a spin. Even Jay Leno has made an appearance just showing off his garage. They don't need celebrities on a lap board, just get them taking part in a segment.

I'm still hoping that they are aware of how drawn out the gag is and are intentionally stretching it so they can flip expectations before the season ends and have a surprise guest, but based on other segments I just think they don't care about the feedback and will keep doing it because they think it's funny.

I'm not convinced by that link. I've had friends in the UK for a very, very long time and never heard any of them call it soccer at any time.

The sport as it is today began in 1888 with the Football League.

http://www.fl125.co.uk/history/1888-1914

So Clarkson has history on his side with naming conventions. If anything he was right about the ball. So we should call it American Rugby.

Soccer is derived from AsSOCiated Football I believe... It's been usually just called "football" since the 19th century. My 1905-born grandparents both called it football certainly...

Actually it started, more or less, with the formation of the Football Association in 1863. Before that there were many different varieties of football played in the UK, and across the world. That form of football... soccer, was codified then. While the people that wanted to keep on carrying the ball went with the Rugby football rules.

This was apparently a popular magazine in the UK until the 1970's:

So, someone called it Soccer.

I guess the name "Football Star" was already taken.

I'm still hoping that they are aware of how drawn out the gag is and are intentionally stretching it so they can flip expectations before the season ends and have a surprise guest, but based on other segments I just think they don't care about the feedback and will keep doing it because they think it's funny.
No, the BBC has already told them they can not have stars on the show so it will likely never happen. They laid out strict rules or they will sue. The lawyers sit down and it gets really silly because they said James can't use the word "c0ck" and the Nambia episode they had to say: "for legal reasons this scenery doesn't look like $h!t" or something like that, because in the Top Gear Botswana episode they say: This scenery is Beautiful. They told them they couldn't do that because it's too similar. lol

I didn't realize the "killing" of a celebrity each week was a knock against the BBC. I also thought non-compete type agreements weren't allowed in the EU (yes, I know, the UK isn't a part anymore, or won't be, but they were when these agreements were made).
