Really into this series. 3 episodes in. I also enjoyed 'FORTITUDE' which is quite different, similar to Michael Crichton present day sci-fi-fi.
Another show set Northwards is 'Bordertown' set in Finland just a couple hours drive to St Petersburg, Russia. Focus is on a quirky detective and his family plus a female Dirty Harry style former Russian FSB law enforcement agent. Enjoying all these settings especially since I was in these countries this June on a Viking* Homelands Baltic cruise.

* No there's no pillaging, looting and burning of hapless European port villages as one might think

Bordertown is a thinly veiled copy of The Bridge. Still I found the characters to be interesting and pretty well developed.

Only two episodes in and surprised by how many 'current events' Trapped squeezes in: a little soft-porn in the intro, the U.S-caused banking-economic crises; Chinese expansionism; not-in-my-backyard in reply; youngster school/home bullying (hope that picked-on kid in the Arctic storm survives); divorce and its affect on kids, Euro police/legal bureaucracy (Danish search warrant required); human trafficking with sadistic bruising, etc., etc . Terrorism from Mid-east refugees could come much later, I guess. Still, it's all woven together with taste, crisp editing, and shooting expertise and shows why excellent dramas get copied here.-- John

And wrt to Euro police/legal bureaucracy - worth remembering that Iceland and Denmark have a complex historic relationship, and that Iceland isn't part of the European Union (so isn't as 'integrated' into Europe as many other countries).

Iceland has a similar status in Europe to Norway and Switzerland - part of the European Economic Area, but not part of the EU itself. (The EU is what the UK has voted to leave with 'Brexit'...)

Interesting. Just watched an old file of Discovery's "Cash Cab" where a a rider was asked to name all Scandinavian countries. He managed to add Iceland in the last few seconds. -- John

Ah - did he lose because of that? Strict definition of Scandinavia is usually just Sweden, Norway and Denmark (and only the mainland bits and not their overseas territories) - so doesn't include Finland or Iceland (or the Spitzbergen bits of Norway, the Faroe Islands or Greenland)

If you want to include Finland and Iceland - it's better to use 'Nordic countries' or 'Nordics'

^^^He didn't lose. Maybe they've sharpened their definitions since that season 1 episode, though. A few networks replay Cash Cab episodes (~2005--2009) endlessly here--and Discovery markets them around the world.. -- John

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I thank the OP for the suggestion.

The only weak moment was in episode 8.

Spoiler!

I definitely look forward to season 2, if there's one. Season 1 was based in 2015. It's now 2017. So, I'm not super hopeful.

In addition to all the other consequences, I think it added the possibility of reconciliation, which made the decision to not drop the key off the dock even more difficult. He paid a huge personal price.

after finishing Trapped I might check out Fortitude even though it gets mixed reviews...Amazon Prime listed a bunch of 'recommendations' for me if I enjoyed Trapped...one of them is titled 'The Kettering Incident'...sounds like an interesting premise within a unique setting with a mix of sci-fi thrown in:

"Two girls disappear in identical circumstances in the wilds of Tasmania 15 years apart, and Doctor Anna Macy finds herself linked to both cases. To clear her name, Anna must delve into her troubled past and face some truths about herself and the otherworldly nature of this gothic land"
I finally got around to watching The Kettering Incident...I liked it a lot...was a little difficult to piece together who everyone was in the first few episodes but it eventually came together...the show is more X-Files then Twin Peaks as the story is weird and interesting...Elizabeth Debicki did a great job in the lead role as Anna (her career has also taken off as she is a very in-demand actress now)...the rest of the cast was also very good...the finale left a lot unanswered questions and after 2 years there still is no official word on a 2nd season so it looks like this might be it

the cinematography was amazing...the Aurora Borealis scenes were gorgeous...great use of the Australian landscape...definitely worth a watch

I have started watching Season 1 thanks to reading the posts about it here. Love it so far, thanks to those for mentioning it here. This is why I love AVS. I would never have noticed this gem (particularly a show that I need subtitles to watch) were it not for this forum. Kudos! I am about 7 episodes in and it seems brilliant so far.

Season 1 was excellent...hopefully S2 hits this Fall...this Golden Age of TV is great but it also sucks that we have to wait so long between seasons for a lot of these shows

You won't be sorry if you take on Trapped. When I started it, I had absolutely no idea what it would be about. No matter, I was immediately hooked and ended up loving the whole season. Bring on Season 2!

Season 2 trailer (not in English)...I miss the snow and blizzard conditions...the bad weather was a character in the first season...hopefully the show can keep the mood and atmosphere and not just become another police procedural...

Absent the snow, (which makes everything seem clean and shiny), the bleakness and grittiness of the place can also work for the show. The trailer sort of makes it seem like that's what they are going for.

I forgot to come back around to this thread after finishing season 1. I loved it. I am glad there will be a season 2, and I certainly will be watching. Thanks again for the folks here for pointing this one out. I wouldn't have thought to even glimpse at it had it not been for the posts and good reviews here. Well worth the watch!

I still think the snow/blizzard conditions added to the atmosphere and was almost a character itself...I hope they can still nail the storyline for S2 but they are taking a risk

BBC 4?...what about BBC America or Amazon for viewers in the US?!...from what I'm hearing about Season 2 they really made the story very region specific, dealing with Icelandic topical issues...I'm looking forward to watching it but it also seems like too big of a departure from what worked in the first season...I also think the blizzard/ice/snow setting was a major character unto itself and taking that away is taking away something from the series as a whole

DVD release is set for 4/1 in the UK, but so far no indication of a BD release.

Watching S-2 now on DVD. Its great. Available now from Amazon Global Store in a R-2 DVD set. PQ is average for DVD, I suspect it will look a bit better when streaming HD when that becomes available.
