The Marvelous Mrs Maisel on Amazon

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel on Amazon Prime is smart, funny and irresistible. Available in 4K and HDR, great audio too.

I binge watched the whole thing in one night, it was very well done. When I get 4K I will rewatch it. Very well done period sets and clothing with only a few inadequacies, have to commend the set decorators. Only blatant issue to some who are sticklers on appliances is the wall oven in the pilot episode, it was late 60's not late 50's.

Looking forward to see how the show develops. If I recall it is supposed to progress into the '70s.

I just finished viewing this and found it very well done. The art direction, costuming, etc. really worked their magic to embody the period, (though somewhat romanticized). It seemed to me, the presentation is almost stage like and inhabited it's own encapsulated world without need, or encroachment of major world events as other period stories have done.

The actors all did a great job, especially Rachel Brosnahan. Even those like Jane Lynch who had relatively short screen time hit all the right marks and were well cast.

I loved The Marvelous Mrs Maisel too and binge watched it over a couple of days. Rachel Brosnahan as Midge was amazing. She is a formidable talent. The entire ensemble cast was wonderful. I particularly enjoyed Alex Borstein as Midge's running mate, Susie. Tony Shalhoub, who played Midge's father was terrific too. Highly recommended, 10 Stars out of 10!

I just finished episode 4 and was bummed to see that there are only 8 episodes in the series. It's been nominated for two Golden Globes, including for best comedy and best lead actress. So that definitely bodes well for a second season. It's a fun entertaining show that's perfect for the holiday season, especially for those needing a break from real family drama.lol

Same here. Rachel Brosnahan is incredible. She was very good in House of Cards and Manhattan but this role is a career maker for her. The entire cast is outstanding and the writing is world class. As someone who is Jewish and grew up in NYC in the 1950's (although not in a swanky Upper West Side Apartment building but rather in an attached two family house in Brooklyn) the religious and cultural references had me smiling throughout. The different economic stratas did not detract from all of the similarities. The setup for season 2 was perfect. Can't wait.

Oh, I had to get used to the idea very quickly that the period references are actually a mish-mash of 50s and 60s, from the vintage appliances (that you spotted) to the choices of music as punctuation. The show doesn't approach the period "truthiness" of MAD MEN, but I suspect that's not the objective. As long as we are willing to coast on a relatively free-form nostalgia wave the point is made that times have certainly changed for women (and everyone else for that matter).

I love the show just the way it's presented. So happy there will be more.

The show does make very specific historical and cultural references that don't line up: the presidential election (Kennedy vs. Nixon) discussed in episode 2 or 3 took place in 1960, but Lenny Bruce's arrests for obscenities did start until 1961, and he wasn't arrested in New York until 1964.

I'm sorry this show is not getting more buzz. I finished it last night and think it was one of the funniest shows I've seen on TV for years, and her stand up is better than most things I see on network TV at night. I do understand the difference between going on every night, 5 days a week and this scripted show was only 8 episodes, but it is quite hilarious. It is well worth a watch.

Just finished ep 7 (it was late, we were tired). Will finish up, tonight. I also spotted some things that were out of the timeline. Current Fire Extinguishers, didn't see a cord on the pay phone
Spoiler!
and a few other things. I also liked when Alex Borstein gave us a Lois Griffin cameo of sorts..

Walking the fine line between jaw-dropping and a plain ol' yawn.

And the winner is ... The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel! (Golden Globe trophies for best lead actress and best comedy). I see a very bright future for Midge and the actress Rachel Brosnahan.

Fence sitters officially have no reason for not moving this to the top of their must-binge queue.

As cynical as I am about the Golden Globe Awards, I really did love this show and deeply admired the performances of Rachel Brosnahan in it. It was a star making turn, I think.

On a whim I have rewatched Season 1 of The Amazing Mrs. Maisel over the past few days. It was at lest as much fun this time as it was the first. One of the main reasons I find the show so appealing is that Midge and her contemporaries were about the same age as my wife and I were at the time. Also, American professional class values of that era were pretty similar, regardless of location. Midge's mother tickles me to death and in some ways reminded me of my own. I admit, though, that none of my contemporaries ever opined in my presence that Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were innocent.

From the remove of the 21st Century, watching the persecution of dirty talking comedians, like the real Lenny Bruce and the fictional Midge Maisel, by overzealous police officers, prosecutors, and judges was unsettling.

The music in the show is almost as much fun as the writing. It always heightens the drama. For example, I was moved by Barbra Streisand's wonderful but sad down tempo performance of Happy Days Are Here Again, while the recently separated Midge is remembering happier times with her husband. The show is riotously funny but not infrequently melancholy too.

We are supposed to get a ten episode second season this year but so far as I know no exact start date has been announced. I await its arrival with bated breath!

This show looks terrific in UHD HDR, as do most of the Amazon shows, which have been given that treatment.

Thanks for the heads up telling us that The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has been renewed for a third season. That's great news! Until I read the piece to which you linked, I didn't know that the show had just won a Peabody Award. Richly deserved!

Quite the marvelous night for Mrs. Maisel: 5 Emmy wins, including for best comedy, best lead actress, best supporting actress, and best writer and best director nods for one of the showrunners.

If you're in the Amazon Prime app anyway watching Jack Ryan, you might as well finally check this out. It's simply (and still) the best Prime Original right now.

In addition to all the other great comments, I especially love Alex Borstein's portrayal. She is the funniest part of the show IMO.

Also love Luke Kirby's Lenny Bruce, especially his voice work. Amazing show.

Nope. I just saw Amazon's FB post about the Emmy wins. A lot of people in the comments were asking the same thing, but Amazon was only responding with "soon." During the Emmy speeches, the showrunner said they had wrapped filming on season 2 a couple of days ago.

It's been about a year since we watched this, so it's way past time for S2. As good as Brosnahan was, Tony Shalhoub had me cracking up. I was taken back to the early 90s when Tony played Antonio Scarpacci in Wings. What a hilarious show that was. Thomas Haden Church killed it.
