Altered Carbon- Netflix original

another impressive looking Netflix series coming early next year...looks very Blade Runner-ish...Altered Carbon imagines a future in which the most discerning (and presumably wealthiest) human beings can live forever, transferring their now-portable conscious selves into an endless series of vessel bodies-- or, in future corporate marketing-speak, "human sleeves"

the series is based on Richard K. Morgan's books of the same name and follows protagonist Takeshi Kovacs as he investigates a murder...the twist?...human consciousness has been digitized and Kovacs was dead for a few centuries prior to being resurrected to take the case...this type of death and resurrection isn't cheap, and as such, only the well-heeled have access to it...when the deceased in question is the world's richest man, the question of just what mortality means comes into play...

I've had Altered Carbon on my Goodreads "to read" list for a while. Maybe I need to get to that series sooner than later. (I prefer to read the book first.)

Set for NetFlix release in February 2018. Said to be their most expensive series yet. Can't wait.

that's cool that Miguel Sapochnik (of Game of Thrones fame) is directing the premiere...even more reason to be excited for this...Netflix is really stepping up their game recently and is not just relying on those Marvel superhero shows to carry their lineup

That worries me. If it doesn't get a huge "Game of Thrones"-like following/buzz within a couple of seasons, it will likely get cancelled like Marco Polo and Sense8.

for the people that have read the books, do you think they can adapt 1 book per season?

Yes, absolutely. But it will be interesting to see what they do about casting, since Kovacs is resleeved every book.

Hopefully this is as good as it looks. I really need Netflix to get up to 50 or so really good shows. They drop the whole season at once and I cant watch one a week, I finish a season a week. Right now im out of things to watch, cant wait.

Always thought these would be good books. However, do we get a new lead actor every time Kovacs changes bodies?

good question...I'm guessing yes if they want to stick to the source material...I mean the whole premise is about changing 'sleeves' so keeping the same actor wouldn't make any sense

There's a lot more to it than that. I'm just hoping it isn't all action as that's not how the novels read.

MP, Sense8 and the Getdown spent all their money on sets, locations, and royalties. They forgot to spend money on writers, stories, and plotlines. If Altered Carbon makes the same mistake, it deserves cancellation.

The first seasons of Marco Polo and Sense8 unfortunately got off to slow starts, introducing many characters and storylines, which got confusing and prevented the shows from hooking a more sizable audiences--or at least audiences that prefer not to be mentally taxed too much. IMO, once Marco Polo and Sense8 got going (mid-way through s.1), their stories and plots were as good as any of Netflix's top originals.

I don't think slow starts are an excuse for a show underperforming...Game of Thrones was not a fast paced, ratings juggernaut during Season 1...yes it had its moments of spectacle but it was a slow burn, character driven story which knew where it was going and was taking its time setting everything up...Deadwood and many other top shows also were a slow burn...if Altered Carbon does the same it'll be fine...too many people want instant gratification nowadays

Fortunately, HBO stuck by GoT. I do understand the business decision behind the cancellations of Marco Polo and Sense8: big-budgeted shows that didn't generate huge buzz or awards recognition that was expected (albeit we'll never know what the actual viewership is for any Netflix show). I don't think the gap between seasons (or the lackluster Xmas special for Sense8) helped those shows either. But it saddens me to think that Iron Fist is getting another season.

Iron Fist is getting another season because it's part of the bigger Marvel intellectual property...all those Marvel shows should be considered 1 giant interconnected series...Sense8 and Marco Polo never got the critical acclaim and buzz which could have offset its overall ratings numbers...Netflix shows are made to be binge watched at any time so I don't think ratings matter all that much...Altered Carbon is apparently the most expensive Netflix series ever based on a beloved source material so I don't see it getting a quick axe...2 seasons at a bare minimum but most likely this will become to Netflix what GoT is to HBO (Stranger Things might have more widespread broader appeal though)

my fear is that Altered Carbon becomes a niche show for the hard core sci-fi crowd...much like the excellent Blade Runner 2049 underperformed at the box office despite it being one of the smartest sci-fi movies

reviews are out and unfortunately aren't as good as a lot of people were probably hoping for...visuals are getting high praise but the story isn't getting as much love...I'm still planning on watching regardless but I'm disappointed that it's not getting stronger reviews...

Well thats disappointing, it won't keep me from watching. Good visuals can help immensely if the story is so-so.

Sorry to get OT, Babylon Berlin starts in a week and Netflix still doesnt have a trailer up, which I find kind of strange. I can only guess they havent encoded subtitles yet since I have scoured the net and not one trailer with subtitles let alone dubbed. Making me wait I suppose, the buzz on this show is pretty good, the sordid bits I think are helping drive it.

will there be a dubbed English version along with a subtitled version?...does Netflix always offer both for foreign language originals?
