Some they do, I do think its not many and Dark is a anomaly as far as the dubbing. Wishful but I really dont think this will be dubbed at any point after searching. This was released in the UK in November and I still cant find a safe place to view a trailer with subtitles, strange, but Sky who produced it has a very tight reign on it. Some things may be lost with translation due to dialect and some cultural idioms, which I guess is to be expected. It would be intersting to know what is missed out on, but Im not taking up German any time soon, if it was a little more age appropriate Id have my son watch, he's on his 2nd year of German.

Just watched the trailer. I'm in. Love Kinnamann & Purefoy. Some of the critics' criticism is reminiscent of really expensive misfires. Sounds like there's not a lot of character development in characters who should be more interesting then they're written.

It's an interesting time to be in the entertainment business. There has been this explosion of media providers which are engaging in this kind of arms race with original programming. Netflix is literally throwing billions at it, and others like Amazon and Hulu are struggling to keep up. And then there are the premium cable networks, and all the cablenets that are all chasing fewer and fewer eyeballs.

There has never been a better time to be an actor or otherwise involved in the film industry. There's a gold rush in the business, and if you're appropriately young, exceptionally attractive and moderately talented you should be able to find a gig on one of these hundreds of productions. Lots of waiter and server jobs that used to be the province of struggling actors have probably opened up.

But really good screenwriters, producers and directors are harder to find, and the talent pool must be getting stretched pretty thin. That may have been the case here.

Did the reviewers base their reviews on the entire season I wonder? Two other expensive shows, Marco Polo and Sense8, got off to slow, rocky starts before finding their groove, but unfortunately not a big enough audience.

I'm still hopeful and plan to read the first book before watching season 1, though I'm a bit behind on my reading and it may be a few weeks after the premier that I finally check this out.

According to this reviewer, it's going to be a bloodbath:

Quote:
The sheer amount of blood and gore depicted is overwhelming. Episodes that would otherwise be riveting meditations on the purpose of death are marred by scenes that feel like endless nesting dolls of pain and suffering. This is not a show for the faint of heart, or the weak of stomach.

Altered Carbon showrunner teases epic series, addresses controversies

On Friday, Netflix will release its most ambitious series yet: The cyberpunk noir thriller Altered Carbon is an R-rated mind-bending sci-fi series starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as Takeshi Kovacs, an elite warrior who is revived after spending 250 years in a cryogenic prison, awakening a new body (or “sleeve”) and tasked with solving the murder of a wealthy and near-immortal mogul (James Purefoy)...the result has elements of familiarity (Blade Runner, Black Mirror, The Matrix, Westworld…) yet the sum of the parts is something both original and daring

already the show has had some pre-release controversies which showrunner Laeta Kalogridis (Birds of Prey, the upcoming Alita: Battle Angel) tackles with plenty of insight and empathy in this spoiler-free Q&A below...“We took a lot of risks,” Kalogridis says. “There isn’t any good art without risk and we definitely put ourselves out there.”...

Watched the first episode. It's tripped out. The 4k HDR is fantastic. In fact, I found myself mesmerized by the visuals. I had to rewind it a few times because I missed what they were saying. Lol. One episode in and so far so good. Buckle up. This looks like a crazy ride.

I just finished watching the 1st episode and the thing that really jumps out to me is that the production values and visuals are insane...INSANE!...thy spared no expense in creating this futuristic world...Blade Runner 2049 didn't look this good...the 4K/Dolby Vision looks stunning...right up there with Game of Thrones in terms of lavish visuals...best looking sci-fi show ever...the storyline and characters are also interesting...complex mythology that requires time to absorb...one tip is to turn on the subtitles if you don't understand some of the whispers or dialogue as they seem to provide important info (I turn them on as needed and then disable them again)...really amazing start...if the rest of the episodes are up to this standard then this will be a classic

really great job directing by Miguel Sapochnik (Sapochnik directed some of the biggest Game of Thrones episodes)...proves that he has an amazing eye for framing shots and visuals...show has me hooked and makes me want to buy the books

Through the first 4 episodes so far and I'm loving it. It looks spectacular and makes me wish I had waited to watch until I had my 4K display, though it still looks fantastic on the trusty 1080p plasma.

The showrunner comments of the look of the show in that article you posted above,

Quote:
I once heard the budget on Altered Carbon was $150 million. If anything it looks like more than that. But if true, that would make this the most expensive first-year show of all time. How close is that number?

Not. Not even remotely. I don’t know where that number came from but it’s complete bulls—. I’m flattered it looks like that. When you have really gifted heads of departments — production designer, props, costume — it doesn’t give them their due to not recognize that they took a much lower budget than that and made it look like that. We have a really healthy and ambitious budget but not history-making. What we did have that was history-making was a group of people aligned around the idea that we wanted to create something that didn’t look like anything that had been on television before. Netflix really backed our vision for scope and scale and that was a huge deal because you can’t realize this sort of thing unless the world feels real. But I would love to have that budget. I think you should call Netflix and tell them we should have that budget if we get another season!

Working on it, I can't make up my mind on whether to go for the 2017 Sony A1E or wait for the 2018 models in April and see what LG has to offer with their supposedly improved processing.

I have to say though, I'm getting pretty antsy to just do it now.

I watched the first two episodes last night with "all the pixels".

My concern though was the visuals distract from the storyline. It becomes like a circus act with "and now this amazing device from the future". Maybe more on the story and less the visuals? This is why I like some of the budget constrained series out of the UK and Europe as they are more about story and less about visuals. But Americans like their visuals I guess.

I also noticed that it seemed to borrow from "Total Recall" than "Blade Runner."

I couldn't resist watching the first episode last night (on a 10-year-old 32" LCD no less - don't ask) even though I had planned to wait until I finished the book (I'm only on p.75). It's already apparent that like The Expanse series, Altered Carbon will be worth "double-dipping," as there are things I liked more about the book and things I liked more about the TV show. Speaking of double-dipping, I'll definitely be rewatching this first episode on my living room plasma at some point.lol

Watched the first 15 minutes on my computer monitor just to see what it was like. Plan on watching the whole series soon (in the theater). One thing I know so far for sure: Joel Kinnaman is insanely ripped! Doesn't even look like the same guy from 'The Killing'. It's amazing how far these actors will take body-modification for a role.

My bro-in-law loves the book. Says it's the best sci-fi novel he's ever read, that the writing is exquisite. I'm still in Book 6 of 'The Expanse', and I want to get caught up (there are 7 now, with one more to come) before I start on another literary adventure. But like Zook says, this might be worthy of a vid-lit "double-dip" eventually.

Watched the first 3 episodes last night. AC is spectacular looking. Probably the best looking HDR content on Netflix.

If you didn't know what this series was, you would think it was a scene out of Blade Runner 2049.

I watched the 2nd episode last night and I was happy to see that the spectacular eye candy visuals were still on display- maybe more so then the pilot episode...I know a lot of shows blow their budgets with mega-expensive cinematic pilots but then the other episodes are a noticeable step down in terms of budget...doesn't seem to be the case with Altered Carbon as it looks like every episode is going to be a big budget spectacle...I will say as far as the story that I didn't like the Ortega cop character in the 1st episode but starting with Episode 2 she grew on me and am now on board with her character...only negative I'll say is that the title 'Altered Carbon' doesn't really roll off the tongue and they could have come up with a better title

since I don't have a man-cave (although I do have full light control in my TV room) I like waiting until it gets dark to watch all my critical TV viewing as it looks better on my OLED (and previous plasma)
