The Chi ShowtimeHD January 7th, 2018

I watched the 1st episode which is available On Demand .. it was quite compelling and I'm looking forward to the Series ::

The Chi is an American drama series created by Lena Waithe about life in a particular neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. The pilot was directed by Rick Famuyiwa. It will premiere on Showtime on January 7, 2018.

The South Side of Chicago carries daily danger, and the smallest and simplest of decisions can have life or death consequences for the residents. Life continues as the kids prep for school and their parents shuffle off to work. The young adults of the area are trying to scrape a living for themselves, while the elders sit on their front porches and observe the goings on. The South Side has the potential to crush dreams, and this coming-of-age series focuses on Kevin, a preteen who embraces the normal rites of childhood, Brandon, who makes a leap of faith to succeed in love and life with Jerrika, Emmett, who seeks guidance from his mother, and Ronnie, who is a drifter struggling to be loved. All of them are linked together by sheer coincidence as they seek redemption.

That trailer gives it a bit of "The Wire" feel to it.

Great pilot.

Kima from The Wire was the hysterical mother of the son killed.

These are just my opinions.

At the start I thought that was a girl on the bike. Then once the proper gender became clear I thought he would be one of the major players on the show. Bad guess. And another major player, who I felt the same about, seems in peril. I can't take anything for granted on the show. Great program.

Interesting that they might draw in people who are normal people, not gangbangers, into crimes of revenge.

As opposed to depicting a city or community besieged by gang violence. At least the first two episodes seem to be about characters who are not in the gangster life.

In fact, I thought one of the previews was one gangster telling a character something like "this life isn't for you."

You would hope the guy who's aspiring to be a chef doesn't fall into it but seems kind of inevitable.

Saw the pilot. Not sure if I'll continue or not. Its premise seems a bit weak.

Like the show well enough but of all the shows on Sunday night, it's not the one I anticipate the most.

Three old OG gangsters take out the young crew in the dead of the night, like assassins out of a spy movie.

Don't know if I buy that or that crime is perpetrated in the hood with such finesse.

I'm in for the duration on The Chi. The acting is convincing as is the storyline. And I really enjoy the music as well. The song played at closing of the last Ep is a new yet unreleased song by Peabo Bryson.

I think, therefore I am single.

I like the show. I can't remember any of the characters names, but the guy who moved in with Kima from The Wire is hilarious.

the problem with the Golden Age of TV is that every prestige show feels they can now take 12+ months between seasons...apparently the longer you take equals better quality...Stranger Things will be 1 year and 9 months between Seasons 2 and 3...Homeland will be at least 1.5 years between seasons...etc

Yes, it's somewhat similar to what you see in Europe with some shows taking up to 2 years or even more before they return with a new series of episodes.

I was disappointed to read that neither Sonja Sohn(Brandon's mother) or Steven Williams(the OG who bought the house) are in the show anymore, both being very talented actors.

Not necessarily a bad thing that this season will focus more on the younger cast, if only out of necessity.

But wasn’t the OG and his crew a part of a major story line when season 1 ended?

That's what I thought too and I'm wondering if it will even be mentioned or are they moving on as if it never happened? They did mention Brandon's mother as taking off to the Bahamas(I think?) so maybe they'll acknowledge the missing gangster as well.
