Barry on HBO

Premiering right after Silicon Valley this Sunday.

We've all seen the promos, about a hitman who falls into acting.

Alex Berg is involved. He has been involved with Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Silicon Valley.

The pilot ROCKED!

Not a hilarious show for a comedy. More like a dramedy but I guess Winkler and the Fuches character will provide some of the comedy.

Gene has a nice ride. The acting coaching business must be pretty lucrative.

Wondering, those who are enjoying Barry, if you are also watching Get Shorty. It's on EPIX, so I doubt many have heard of it, but I think it's even better.

So, wow. Can't believe this slipped by me. Pretty rare to go from laugh out loud funny to very serious and back again. Monster cast. I watched the whole first season today. I'm way in.

Yeah, watched it last year & really enjoyed it as well. Really difficult to get the mix of humor and drama just right, but Hader kills it. So to speak.

Anthony Carrigan as a Chechen gangster who just wants to have fun is a scream. We all know shows that try to get it right but keep missing the mark (*cough* Orville *cough*).

That said, a couple of S-2 reviews I've read say the writers, including Hader, are struggling this year. More drama (pretty much given how last season ended); less humor. Not sure how I feel about that, but we'll see.

Yep, definitely more "dramatic" but still great IMO. The half hour time slot really helps. I'm really surprised this hasn't gotten more traction on this forum.

Yeah, right? We're still on the first page!

Really enjoyed the opener. Didn't really go into Janice's death very much. Barry killed her and disposed of the body and that was that. Hank's scenes were gold - the happy-happy montage, but then showed a harder side we really hadn't seen yet.

However long it lasts, Barry will be trying to leave his former life behind but is unable to shake it completely.

Seems early in the series for the cops to be so close to catching him, unless they only plan to d9 two seasons.

Bill Hader's Barry renewed for season 3 at HBO
By Dan Snierson, EW.com - Apr. 10, 2019

Reluctant hitman and aspiring actor Barry Block is being called back for an encore performance.

HBO announced Wednesday that it has renewed Barry for a third season. The dark comedy starring Bill Hader as the aforementioned Barry began its second season March 31.

Created by Hader and Alec Berg, the critically acclaimed series nabbed three Emmys last fall, including one for Hader in the lead actor category, and one for Henry Winkler, who plays acting coach Gene Cousineau, in the supporting actor category.

The cast also includes Sarah Goldberg as Barry’s girlfriend and fellow acting classmate, Stephen Root as Barry’s (former?) handler, and Anthony Carrigan as the affable Chechnyan mobster who needs Barry’s killer skills.

To be fair, no one knows if Janice is dead, I suspect not even the writers.

She's dead, Jim. Otherwise, Barry would have had to wound her (we heard gunshots) and then treat her wounds, then stash her someplace and continue to feed and care for her.

She's not merely dead, she's really most sincerely dead.

Wow, that episode last night! That was one amazing half hour of TV. Most realistic hand-to-hand combat scenes since maybe the first season of 'Daredevil'. Nice trick in having Barry in a ski-mask so his stuntman could do all of that action with a steady, single-camera shot. And one crazy reveal after the other! First, the guy had a houseful of martial arts trophies which Barry slowly notices (uh-oh). Then just when you think Barry has him talked into leaving town this amazing fight erupts. Then his "feral mongoose" of a daughter. And the final bat-poop crazy scene in the drug store.

Maybe the best ep of the series, which is saying something. And no Hank or Gene or Sally, either.

That episode was totally insane! Throughout the episode, until I watched the making-of featurette, I thought Ronny was played by Jon Hamm. Doh!

Speaking of the featurette, Hader talked about how different the episode was (he wrote and directed it) and wasn't sure how it would be received: people would either love it or hate it.

I don't know how anyone who watches this show could hate it. My hope is they don't just forget about the girl, and she pops up at inopportune times, on some kind of revenge mission. I'd love to see her and Hank in a fight.

I, too, was convinced that the actor was Jon Hamm. I knew it was going to be something special right when I saw all of Ronny's trophies. After the beginning, I actually expected the rest of the episode to be just a fight inside the house.

Love this show. Bizarre in the best sense.

Wow, Sally's monolouge there was incredible. Of the three shows I watch including Billions, GOT, I enjoyed this episode of Barry the most.

I have no idea how they are going to get out of that cliffhanger. Fuches has gone from the guy you love to hate to "just hate". Rat bastard.

Barry last night was definitely a great way to unwind after an exhausting episode of GoT. I could've done without more fire (the school bus ), but it was a great balance of the acting stuff, action involving the organized crime groups, and the intrigue involving Fuches and Barry's past.
