Hey now, there are some totalitarian countries where the dogs are even more desperate to get out than the people....

As far as "The Terror", maybe the menace is more a result of the insanity caused by the lead poisoning I mentioned above.

Really enjoying this so far. The attention to period detail is remarkable. But I can't help thinking it must have been a real bear , pun intended, to shoot in those cold winter conditions. Don't know how much of it was actually on location though.

Don't think much if any was shot 'on location'. One of the flaws I've noticed is they forget to 'enhance' the breath from the actors a lot. Some times it's not there at all and other times very minimal. I would think if it's cold enough to freeze a telescope to one's eye, it would be cold enough to see your breath.

Yep, and despite the show being set in the frozen Arctic north, the wind hardly ever seems to blow.

But the thing from episode 5 looked like a polar bear (with mutated face). And when they were both on the mast, it didn't really looked that big.

It's some kind of bear-like "spirit animal", the Eskimo girl's dead father or some kind of spirit entity that watches over their people, I'm guessing. I've already erased the episode where the exploration party looking for leads shot her father. Can't remember if the crew member was killed before or after the shot was fired. If after, then it's all about vengeance. If before, then maybe it has to do with the expedition trespassing on sacred ground or something like that. Perhaps Francis did something up there he shouldn't have done on one of his previous expeditions?

Yah the crew member was killed almost immediately after the father was shot. The creature also left the daughter a seal to eat, but didn't attack her even though it was at the entrance of the igloo and could have easily gotten her. Yup sounds like it's protecting her and her people, their land or both.

Interesting show. It moves very slowly with a lot of talking and not much happening but then they have spurts of great moments and the dialogue between the captains was awesome. Since we really don't know what happened and just have a few pieces of evidence, I hope they don't go to far down the supernatural element while still keeping up the suspense. That was one hell of a job those men took on/signed up for. Wow, takes a special kind of person to know they would be stuck in the ice for a year or more with nothing really to do.

In the death scene for the father, some of the subtitled dialogue from the daughter made reference to a 'third party' (by name, I think) that she indicated she would not be able to control. In hindsight, I guess this was a reference to the 'Thing' (pun intended). I erased my episode too, so this is going from memory.

Is it realistic to have so much provisions on two ships for ~160 men, that could last for years?
Ok, they don't need water, but all the food...
And then the stuff they need for heating/burning, all the candles, the oil, the instruments...
And when I saw in episode 6 how much unnecessary stuff they had to build the scenery for that carnival?
All and everything incl. the men and their bunks on just two ships?

Well since it is what they did, I guess then yes it is realistic. They supplemented it with fish and such I believe but yeah, they talked about like 2 years and 3 if they rationed heavily so they came prepared, everything was geared towards knowing they would have to stay there that long so they came prepared, even though their food storage was one of their downfalls.

I'm liking the show so far, but I hope they don't veer off into the supernatural. Keeping it all a mystery keeps the tension up, and I can suspend my disbelief somewhat, but I hope they don't go too far.

Although unrelated to bear (or whatever it is) attacks, the show makes me think of The Endurance and what they must have gone through. Interesting RL story for those who haven't read about it.

I took it for granted that their attacker is supernatural.

It's certainly inferred in the show, and some characters may be starting to believe it's supernatural... but that's where I hope it stays, inferred. The best suspense/horror isn't what you see, it's what you don't see.

I'm basically saying I hope it remains a mystery and more psychological rather than 'Boo... here is a 20ft spirit bear with 8 arms'.

There's one good thing about not having every episode available immediately like Netflix, there's some threads here I can't read anymore because I'm on episode 1 and they're now filled with spoilers.

^ with the www in play, many series have all episodes available weeks and even months ahead of USA air dates (Strike Back comes to mind).
The last season was actually finished (IIRC) in GB before the first episode of that season aired here.

All 10 episodes of The Terror were dumped on the www last week FWIW, many here have probably watched the complete season already.

You nailed it! It did take me back a bit to when I was 13 when John Carpenter's "The Thing" came out. Good spooky fun, no airtight story but good fun.

My wife and I are enjoying this so far. Impressive considering my wife is repelled tv/movies about old timey times (especially with ships) or anything with the word "star" in it.

I'm not sure they will be able to keep this story and great mood on track for the full 10 episodes but I hope they can.

I love how slow the show is. The show is in no rush to explain things which makes the big moments even more exciting.

It did seem like learning that everyone's being poisoned by lead sealing in canned food is what flipped out the quiet, reasonable doctor Stanley, setting him into a kerosene tent-burning and self-emulation rage. Came across a similar theory here. Read somewhere there's cannibalistic horror to come .

The lead is one factor but I think mystic stuff is also going on. We do have some kind of demon bear running around that can only be controlled by someone that cuts out their tongue.
