Succession on HBO

Premiers this Sunday.

Apparently the characters have been compared to the Murdoch clan, as the children of a media empire vie to take over for the patriarch.

The creator is some English guy so I'm not familiar with his previous shows.

Reviews should be coming in this week.

Lot of lukewarm reviews out there.

Some reviews compare it to Arrested Development and refer to dark comedy, like it's not a straight drama.

I haven't seen this but was thinking, for me anyway, HBO is in a dry spell, other than Westworld, which I watch but I'm kind of lukewarm to, and GoT there's no original programming of theirs I like atm. If not for Bill Maher and Jon Oliver I wouldn't even have a sub.

Well it's suppose to be an hour drama.

I guess we have to hope the acting is good, see if the writing will catch up.

I'll give a look mainly because of Brian Cox. He is one great actor.

I did watch the premiere episode last night. It was a bit slow at first but it grew on me. It's got an interesting assortment of cutthroat characters from Big Daddy to his current wife (number 3) to his brood of "successors". This might be a pretty good ride.

I was impressed with the pilot and looks like a story about wealthy trailer trash.

These are just my opinions.

Won't be long before FOX News attacks HBO for putting this on the air--it's obviously a thinly veiled portrayal of Rupert Murdoch and his family. It's dark satire that a lot of people won't "get" unless they know the story of how the Murdoch clan strong-armed their way to take over so many newspapers and TV networks all over the world, started the FOX TV network and FOX News in the U.S., and all the "SKY" channels (and lots of print media) in the U.K. IIRC, the real Rupert Murdoch is now suffering symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease, and while that probably makes Murdoch-haters gleeful right now, ain't nothin' funny about that.

Still, the portrayal of his idiot son struggling to make a name for himself amidst the family of bored rich schemers who pretty much hate each other is hilarious, and I couldn't stop laughing at the way everyone piles into helicopters to go everywhere. This is obviously going to be a series that gets a lot of mileage from the theme of "the super-rich are not like the rest of us," Well, duh!

I really didn't see the overt satire here thus didn't really see the comparison to Arrested Development -- what I remember of that show.

Then again I don't know about the Murdoch or any other real life rich family which might have gone through some internal struggle over the family empire.

Technically, I have to say...I've never seen more OLED banding in a single episode of TV in a very long time...no idea what it was about the way this show was shot but my TV did not like it

Overall, I found it entertaining...but not in the way that Billions is entertaining. I'll keep watching

Billions has all these obscure cultural references, while Kendall mentioned Weekend at Bernie's.

Quite ironic since Axe is suppose to have had a hard-scrabble upbringing while these Roy kids presumably had the best education money could buy.

Yes Billions is clever with the quotable quotes but it's not really the way people talk.

Succession is the way real people talk, if you're talking about people living at a trailer park instead of people living in some Hamptons mansion.

That was a real quick 2nd season pick up. HBO probably didn't give a frig about the viewership numbers nor reviews and just wanted to keep telling the story about the Murdoch media empire. Hopefully they'll veer away from the sibling rivalry focus and dish out more dirt on the corporate scum baggery especially when it comes to how they want to control political media narratives as hinted in the commercials.

Andy Greenwald and Chris Ryan talked about this show for about 15 minutes in their The Watch podcast.

They said the creators don't care what genre it is, comedy, drama, satire, etc.

They also said that they don't care if any of the characters are likable, going against the grain of TV consultants.

The reasons to watch the show are the performances by the actors, particularly the guy playing Kendall. They also like the performance of Matthew McFadden, even though Tom is such a despicable character.

They said Kendall is suppose to be like Donald Trump Jr. but he may be the only character who shows any kind of self-awareness.

I don't think this is the first show to have unlikeable characters. Veep is brilliant but every one of the characters do something douchey at least once.

The last 2 episodes without Brian Cox were like watching Deadwood without Al Swearengen. Hopefully the 4th episode pulls it around because I'm not watching another windowbater scene again.

What IS it with the filthy rich peeing on the inside of the highrise windows??? Two different family members have now done it in the series. And that butter-is-too-cold outburst, WOW! The full-throttle "bi-polar" scene of the year!

Well Roman didn't just pee and he did kind of clean up after himself.

Logan is marking his territory against what he sees as his would-be usurping son.

Kendall wasn't going to talk about Roman retiring but someone put it into the teleprompter that he would be, which made Logan force himself up to the podium to give that speech.

There's a theory that Logan himself put that in, so that he'd have a reason to preempt Kendall's speech.

In the pilot episode, Logan and Kendall talked about how running the empires is about swinging the big dick. Kendall can only try, talking trash to rivals, only to have it blow up in his face. Logan seems to still be able to pull it off.

These characters are not sympathetic at all -- Kendall has some vulnerability -- but the performances of the actors make them interesting.

I thought Kendall put it in but it was a joke...at least thats what I took away from the conversation at the end. It just wasn't marked joke in the teleprompter

No the theory is Logan or Marcia did it to reassert his dominance. Logan can barely stand up but you can see Marcia kind of egging him on to go up and pull the rug out from under Kendall by announcing that he's coming back.

The opening credit sequence shows home movies of the kids and family growing up. There's kind of a sad vibe to it because despite all the money, Logan was cold to his kids, unsupportive.

Not exactly, other than being about rich people in NY.

Some see it as drama, some as satire (or the Murdochs). There's one interpretation that it doesn't fall into any genre.

So far, any draw seems to be the acting, whether they can make unlikeable characters interesting enough to keep watching nevertheless.

That doesn't track...Kendall specifically mentions that he's planning to do a joke twice earlier in the episode. Once to the Lead Counsel Jeane and once to his younger brother.

The joke just wasn't include in the text for the teleprompter and Alan assumed that Kendall was going to try to force Logan out the door for his own benefit. Marcia saw the opportunity when Alan (back-stabbingly) raised it to Logan at dinner.

At least that's how I read/saw it...Kendall seemed genuinely shocked that Logan did the speech and that's when he mentioned it was going to be a joke about Logan never retiring...
