Netflix Boards TNT’s ‘Snowpiercer’ Series
By Sonia Kil, Variety.com - Jul. 24, 2018

Netflix has boarded “Snowpiercer,” a TV series adaptation of South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho’s hit 2013 feature film. The series will premiere on TNT in the U.S. in 2019, while Netflix will carry the show outside America and China.

The futuristic action thriller series revolves around the remnants of humanity trapped inside a gigantic train after the world has become a frozen wasteland. It raises questions about class warfare, social injustice, and the politics of survival.

Co-produced by Tomorrow Studios, Turner’s Studio T, and Korea’s CJ Entertainment, the series is executive produced by Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements, as well as Scott Derrickson and Matthew O’Connor. The producing staff behind the original film — Bong, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Choi Doo-ho — have also joined the television adaptation as co-executive producers. James Hawes, director of the series, and showrunner Graeme Manson also share the role.

As previously disclosed, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly and Tony Award winner Daveed Diggs star in the series, along with Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Katie McGuinness, Susan Park, Lena Hall, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Sheila Vand, Roberto Urbina and Sasha Frolova.

Hawes joined the show earlier this month, less than two weeks after Derrickson, the pilot’s original director, announced he would not return for reshoots. Derrickson claimed that the decision was due to the series’ new showrunner, Graeme Manson’s “radically different vision” from that of original showrunner and series creator Josh Friedman, who left the show in January.

This is one of those things that would seem to be fine for a "high concept" movie, which it was, but I don't see how they can sustain the premise for multiple episodes of a TV series, let alone multiple years. The whole point of the movie was how the heroes fought their way from the back of the train (where the lower classes lived & toiled in misery) up to the front (where the privileged lived and enjoyed the fruits of the lower classes' labors), car by car. Is that really going to be the whole point of the series?

The movie was a satire, full of analogies. It didn't take itself seriously. What you saw wasn't exactly what you got. It made it's points well in a couple hours and got out. Basing a series on this is not a good idea. They will take everything at face value and make another dumb class warfare overlong drama out of it.

I can only imagine the train will break down or need to resupply, and they'll encounter groups of people around the world surviving without living on the train. Kind of like how on the 100, supposedly nobody had survived outside of the space stations when in reality there were large groups and pre-industrial-like civilizations.

This sounds as if it could be like the old Starlost series where the cast wandered from dome to dome, in the huge spaceship, hoping to reach the control room. In each episode Keir Dullea wandered into another dome with different human civilizations.

TNT Chief Addresses ‘Snowpiercer’ Showrunner Changes As Sci-Fi Drama Nears Airdate – TCA

by Peter White

February 11, 2019 3:50pm
Kevin Reilly has addressed the showrunner changes behind TNT’s long-gestating sci-fi drama Snowpiercer. The chief creative officer of Turner Entertainment, who is also president of TNT, said the Jennifer Connelly-fronted drama should soon see the light of day and that the network is “just playing with the timing of when it airs.”

He also addressed the showrunner changes at the show, which is produced by ITV-backed Tomorrow Studios, Turner’s Studio T, along with CJ Entertainment. This is after things got ugly between former showrunner Josh Friedman, who was replaced by Orphan Black’s Graeme Mason.

Reilly admitted the situation got “very strange.”

“Quite often when you have a change, it signals that you didn’t really buy into their vision. We had a pilot that was very promising with some creative people behind it, and in that case it was a filmmaker [Friedman] who hadn’t really done TV before, and mounting a series was a different order, and we got on Graeme who was a consummate professional and an incredible partner and has built off of the template that we had with the great cast,” Reilly said.

Friedman exited the project in January 2018 and was replaced by Mason in February. However, The Sarah Connor Chronicles writer and producer slammed the etiquette of his successor on Twitter.
“If you’re asked to rewrite someone or take over their show it seems like good sense and good karma to reach out to that person first and a) find out what the circumstances of their departure are and b) thank them for doing the work you’ll be profiting from,” Friedman tweeted in May 2018. “You should buy that person a nice meal or a bottle of alcohol if they’re up for it. Your money was earmarked for them at one time. And more than likely, what may be a good job for you was a passion project for them. Put another way: if you were to take over a show I’d originated and worked on for two years and didn’t reach out to me before taking the job you’re either an idiot, a coward, or a vichy mother****er.”

Starring Connelly and Daveed Diggs and based on the acclaimed 2013 movie by Bong Joon-ho, Snowpiercer is set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland. It centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe. Class warfare, social injustice and the politics of survival are questioned in the TV adaptation. Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson directed the pilot. The cast also includes Mickey Sumner, Susan Park, Benjamin Haigh, Sasha Frolova, Katie McGuinness, Alison Wright, Annalise Basso, Sam Otto, Roberto Urbina, Sheila Vand and Lena Hall.

Tomorrow Studios’ Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements executive produce with Derrickson and the original film’s Bong, Park Chan-wook, Lee Tae-hun and Dooho Choi.
Reilly added that he’s seen all of the episodes and called the series “outstanding.”

^Everything about that story makes Friedman sound like a real jerkwad. He got fired from his job and he's demanding that the person who was hired to replace him should take him out to dinner and grovel at his feet for starting the project? That's not how employment works in the real world, no matter what business you're in.

Yeah, I had read that before. I really liked 'Terminator: SCC', was very disappointed it didn't draw enough eyeballs to continue, and thought Friedman was one of the up & comers in the biz. But that comment is surprisingly bitter. And short-sighted. Hollywood is still a relatively small world and that attitude is not going to win him many new friends.

So has NBC. I guess not too many people around these days can remember THIS massive piece of cheese, a series that damn near bankrupted them:

Still not clear to me is how exactly the Snowpiercer movie can be adapted into a TV series once you've learned the awful secret about the train's propulsion system in the final scenes of the original film.

Snowpiercer Cast and EP Talk Class Warfare, 'Bug Bars' and Apocalypse Golfing in TBS' Series Adaptation
By Kimberly Roots, TVLine.com - July 29, 2019

When Snowpiercer premieres on TBS, pay close attention to the accommodations in the back of the titular, globe-circumnavigating train, says star Daveed Diggs: Things aren’t necessarily what they seem.

“The tail end is essentially stowaways. There’s not much there. So they make a lot out of a little,” he says in the video above. “All the beds are made out of, like, discarded golf clubs that I assume they stole from all the rich people’s luggage?” He laughs incredulously. “Because they thought they were going to play golf in the apocalypse?”

Showrunner Graeme Manson quips: “There’s a pitch-and-putt in First Class.”

If you haven’t seen the 2014 thriller on which the show is based, you need to know that a) Earth has become a frozen and uninhabitable wasteland, b) the only survivors of the snowpocalypse are living on a train that will never stop circling the planet, and c) the locomotive is sectioned off by class, with the well-off living like kings in the front while the poor survive by eating protein-rich “bug bars” near the caboose.

The show also takes place seven years after Earth’s freezing — instead of 15, like in the movie — which “just makes everybody’s wounds a little fresher,” Manson said. “The world that ended was our world, this world.”

If this all sounds heavy, don’t worry — there were plenty of laughs when Diggs, Manson and cast members Lena Hall, Jennifer Connelly, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner and Steven Ogg stopped by TVLine’s San Diego Comic-Con 2019 interview suite. So, as Connelly says in the interview, “Prepare to brace” and press PLAY on the video below [CLICK LINK] to take a ride with the Snowpiercer passengers.

I don't think I can remember a show that has bounced around this much. Good thing I didn't change the title yet. :)

From the HOTP thread:

'Snowpiercer' Moves Back to TNT for 2020 Debut
By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter - Oct. 2, 2019

File this news under "train wreck."

Five months after announcing that long-delayed series Snowpiercer would move to the then-comedy-focused TBS, WarnerMedia on Wednesday announced that the drama — which has already gone through two showrunners and two directors — is now returning to its original home at TNT. The series has already been renewed for a second season. A formal premiere date in spring 2020 has not been determined.

Confused? Yes, we are too. Allow Kevin Reilly, chief content officer at HBO Max and president of TNT, TBS and TruTV to explain: "We’ve had the unique opportunity to more thoroughly test and explore where this show will best perform. While we are still adding dramas to TBS (such as Obliterated), after further research and consideration we’ve decided to keep Snowpiercer on TNT,” he said in a statement announcing the news. “Now that we’ve seen this incredible post-apocalyptic sci-fi series in its entirety, and better understand the audience this show will appeal to, we’re confident it will perform strongest on TNT.”

The news comes hours after TBS — the formerly comedy-focused cable network — picked up its first straight-to-series order for a drama in Obliterated, which focuses on an elite special forces team tracking a terrorist network determined to blow up Las Vegas.

The decision to move Snowpiercer to TBS and back to TNT arrives four years after the drama was picked up to pilot at TNT and as new corporate parent WarnerMedia is making its mark on its new brands. Snowpiercer — starring Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs — becomes the latest series to jump networks in the former Turner-owned cabler's suite of networks. The unscripted game shows Drop the Mic and Joker's Wild recently also moved from TBS to TNT as the bar that differentiates both networks continues to blur.

Meanwhile, rumors continue to swirl that TNT and TBS originals — which include the dramas Animal Kingdom and Claws and the comedies The Last OG and Miracle Workers — could launch on WarnerMedia's upcoming streaming platform before making their linear debut or air exclusively on the direct-to-consumer service.

As for Snowpiercer, the series — which was poised to launch this summer — is based on the 2013 film starring Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton. It is set seven years after the world has become a frozen wasteland and centers on the remnants of humanity who inhabit a gigantic, perpetually moving train that circles the globe. Josh Friedman (Sarah Connor Chronicles, War of the Worlds) developed the project, which was first put into development in 2015. It was picked up to pilot at TNT in November 2016 and ordered to series in January 2018 — without Friedman, who said he was fired because the network wanted a more compliant showrunner. It marked the latest time that TNT president Kevin Reilly has parted ways with Friedman or one of his projects. During his tenure as programming president at Fox, Reilly passed over Friedman's own pilot take on Locke and Key and canceled his drama The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Orphan Black co-creator Graeme Manson was tapped in February 2018 to take over as showrunner on the drama. A few months later, Friedman blasted his successor's etiquette when Manson failed to get in touch with him before taking over. Original pilot director Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) subsequently quit and ripped Manson's "radically different vision."

Alison Wright (The Americans) co-stars alongside Rowan Blanchard, who has been promoted to series regular for season two.

No matter how good (or not) Snowpiercer may be, the behind-the-scenes story of the show is already highly entertaining.

I'm more interested in the second part of this article. I love "Atypical"! Since Season 3 drops Nov. 1, I assume this indicates a season 4 is coming.

Allie Rae Treharne (Youth & Consequences) has booked a recurring role in Netflix’s Atypical, from creator/executive producer Robia Rashid and director/executive producer Seth Gordon. Atypical, from Sony Pictures TV, is a coming of age story that follows Sam, an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the central theme: what does it really mean to be normal? Treharne will play Gretchen, a sharp-witted worldeater with the confidence to get what she wants. Treharne most recently appeared in Emmy-nominated YouTube Premium series Youth and Consequences. She’s repped by Haven Entertainment.

Already talking season 2 cast. But cool, I will take Sean Bean any time I can get it. Plus as a series regular, this show just got a little better in my opinion. :)

So this press release basically spoils that the characters played by Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs survive into see season 2? Or is this show more like a network procedural where all the main characters are immortal until a contract dispute crops up or a rising star starts to get better offers?
