First ep was nothing special but a major surprise at the end. We'll see where it goes from here.

Yeah, it started out slow. But to be expected I guess. Gotta introduce the characters and setup the situations. The bounty droid was cool, as was the ending. The DV was pretty lackluster. All said, I’m looking forward to more.

apparently 4K average bitrates are in the 16 Mbps range...so it's pretty much on par with Netflix with higher peaks...not on the same level as Apple TV+ programming

Yeah! That means I can actually use Disney+. I saw a report that AppleTV+ 4k is some 40 Mbps. That would mean I'd burn through my monthly data cap in just 56 hours of viewing!

yeah Apple's bitrates are pretty insane (in a good way for people without data caps like me)…Disney+ is actually a bit higher then Netflix but nothing touches Apple+...too bad there's not enough good shows to watch on Apple+

Oh, so its ~40Mbps peak. 29Mbps for the highest quality show. So that works out to 13 GB an hour (29 * 3600 / 8). I'm up to around 78 hours in my 1024 GB cap, if I used my connection for nothing else. If only there was some competition out here for Comcast. But somehow every FTTH plan out here hasn't materialized and there have been 2 that I know of.

Although there is a trick with Netflix to save on data on an Apple TV 4k. Force it to 1080p and it will stream 1080p but still Dolby Vision. Doesn't work with Amazon Prime though, I get 1080p SDR. Wonder if that'll work for AppleTV+/Disney+.

you mean by turning the Quick Start setting to Off in the ATV settings?...like you said I'm not sure if it works for all apps because with some apps it doesn't show you which resolution it's outputting at (unless you have a Mac and install Xcode)

I'm not at home so I'm going by memory here,

Hmm, no not quick start. I'm going in and changing the resolution to 1080p, but leaving the dynamic range setting to auto adjust. My TV reports the resolution its getting. I don't have xcode, or even a Mac for that matter. I logged into my router to see how much data was coming in to test.

Quick Start actually does something similar...if you disable the setting it will cap your max output to 1080p SDR...I tested it myself and it works...but it might only apply to iTunes or some of the Apple specific apps

Agreed, the primer episode was quick and got the story across. Lots of little (and big) nods to the known SWU. I am in for the season.

Is The Mandalorian a weekly installment? I'd like to do the 7-day trial and check out the series before I commit.

Yes, one episode a week (this week however there will be 2 released). So if you want to binge a few or more you’ll need to wait a bit.

I finished watching Episode 1...very nice start to the series...the production values are movie quality...it looks like one of the main SW movies from a visual standpoint...the use of practical effects is a nice touch and it totally feels like classic old school Star Wars...so far I like the secondary characters played by Carl Weathers, the droid played by Taika Waititi and Werner Herzog moreso then the main Mandalorian character...tough to really relate to him when he's always covered in full armor

the ending to the episode was pretty epic and has major implications for the larger SW universe...I can't wait to see where they're going with this

some negatives: I watched it in 4K Dolby Vision and thought black levels could be better...they were a bit crushed, probably a side effect of streaming but it didn't look inky black to me...I also wasn't a fan of the closing credits music...didn't sound like a SW theme...they should at least try and replicate the overall John Williams sound

Spoiler!

Thanks. So I should wait till sometime in December if I want to binge the entire series with the 7-day free trial?

I don't understand the decision with recent star wars content (Mandalorian, Last Jedi and Solo for sure, probably the others as well) to use an elevated black floor. I can set the black extension to 5 on my plasma without crushing the blacks. It's absolutely stupid and irritating. Why on earth would you purposely gimp the contrast in a space movie/show of all things? Star Wars should be pushing the envelope of visual fidelity, not trying to simulate an IPS panel on my plasma TV.

I liked the pilot and am "in" on the series (for at least the first season). My only issue is I'm not getting 5.1 audio, but it must be something with the phone/app->TV interface. I will be bummed if I'm permanently reduced to 2 channel PCM

Agree. I even liked the graphic illustrations right at the end. I thought they were a nice touch and a good episode recap in a way. Well done all around.

This is good stuff for SW fans, especially if you enjoyed the originals. I'm in for the season.

I think, therefore I am single.

Did anyone else think the series seemed a little washed out for supposedly being HDR? I watched a couple scenes from my Nvidia Shield, and from the built in samsung app, and neither had very good blacks. I am watching on a Q9FN so it handles HDR pretty well.

it definitely wasn't a 4K Dolby Vision showcase...I hear Disney wants to spend $25 million per episode for some of their upcoming original series...hopefully they put some of that budget into better cameras

I do think Mandalorian was purposely filmed with a particular aesthetic in mind...it's meant to look a little raggedy and grainy reflecting the post-Return of the Jedi lawlessness of the universe...it's not meant to look pristine and clean...sort of has that Solo look (the Han Solo prequel movie)

I agree with the picture quality comments, but I also found the sound pretty compressed sounding.

It was a fun watch though.

The Mandalorian Dolby Digital Plus Audio

Did anyone notice that the Dolby Digital Plus had to be herd a reference level?
Otherwise, it would have been to low on Amazon HD Fire Stick.
