It's not just you. The Mandalorian is mastered with the same elevated black levels and flattened contrast as other modern Star Wars productions (The Last Jedi, Solo, etc.). I got virtually no sense of "HDR" from it.

Watched it on my Roku 4k TV last night.

Enjoyed it for the most part.

Audio was "off" for me..in that effects and such were loud but dialogue seemed muffled....had to keep adjusting volume between action scenes and dialogue scenes.

Spoiler!

During the end credits I noticed the Unreal Engine logo. Then I watched this panel (which is mostly fluffy fan service) where Herzog mentioned the actors seeing, and the cameras capturing the actual world, and Favreau clarified that they're the first production using the new virtual set extension video walls rendered in Unreal instead of green screens (fast forward to 24:12):

Here's a video showing how the new tech works:

Watched on a JVC NX7 via ATV4K and gigabit internet. I thought it was very cinematic and deserved the 2.35 AR. It is a space western through and through so you have to keep that in mind when evaluating the aesthetic of the show. It won't be an HDR showcase. It is dirty and grimy outer rim territory stuff. A bleak landscape for sure with lots of brown and gray but it fits the mood perfectly. Initially I gave the show high marks for video but I then paused some scenes and changed my mind due to elevated black floor. But I have seen worse. The show still has great detail and just oozes style. It is pretty close to the aesthetic and mood I want in a live action Star Wars so I am interested to see where it goes from here. I do think the first episode is mostly set up and it is only going to improve in the next few episodes.

The audio being limited to 5.1 (edit: it is atmos but there are technical difficulties at the moment ) is a disgrace for a show with this kind of mega budget. It does up mix with Dolby Surround well enough but it needs a significant bump in volume to get the impact one would expect. Similar to Disney mixes of late.

I like the moody western themed music. They are daring to do something different and this should be welcome in todays Disneyfied world of homogenized connected universe that never dares to go off the railroad tracks of mass appeal.

according to a countdown clock on the official Star Wars website, Chapter 2 of The Mandalorian unlocks at 3:05 AM EST...so they're going with the Netflix method of midnight PST unlocks

apparently another short episode- this one only 31 minutes

Not a bad starting episode, while it had that OT look, it was closer to a Leone spaghetti western than any SW story so far. A good thing!! Now that Filoni is no longer under Lucas's supervision he can spread his wings here. And thanks to Favreau he keeps crazy Kathy out of the creative loop as well. Looking forward to more episodes. Oh yeah Pedro sounds like Timothy Oliphant through that helmet/voice box.

if he's going to keep the helmet on all the time then they should have copied the Star Wars movies-- 1 guy as the Darth Vader body double (Sebastian Shaw) and another guy to do the voice (James Earl Jones)

I loved Episode 2...I'm surprised they revealed as much as they did about the baby's powers so soon...my only complaint is that the episode was way too short (32 minutes)...but I also look at the big picture- even if all 8 episodes are ~30 minutes, we're pretty much getting a 4+ hour Star Wars movie...I love how they put in SW references but they aren't just putting them in for the sake of nostalgia, they are an important part of the current story

Same on a Shield TV. I was pretty bummed with the audio quality overall. Sounded compressed and lifeless, weak LFE.

I'm glad it's not just me. I was thinking the LFE sucked too but thought it may have been that I was streaming through a PS4. My wife watched the original Muppet Movie and it had more LFE than the Mandalorian did, so I guess that wasn't it.

He's clearly doing an impression of young Clint Eastwood to fit the Spaghetti Western theme.

Thanks for the clarification. My Roku states 5.1 but delivers atmos so I wasn’t sure if I believed it. Apparently it is true so happy day.

The Apple TV states and delivers 5.1. Hopefully it can all get sorted out.

Aside from the poorly acted opening bar scene, I really enjoyed the first ep. Looked and sounded impressive. The show really has promise.

I'm not so sure. If you click on the Details tab it shows all the formats the show is available in regardless of the capabilities of your device. And the main tab shows you what your device will play.

Both tabs only show 5.1 on AppleTV while all the movies show Atmos on both tabs.

I think the confusion is coming from the fact that some devices like Roku and Xbox will upmix everything to Atmos depending on the settings.

BTW Episode 2 is up.

My Roku Premiere+ doesn't upmix anything. It sends native bitstream. Other content on Disney+ comes through as DD+ 5.1. The Disney+ menu for The Mandalorian erroneously states only 5.1 audio, but the show does have an Atmos soundtrack. However, a lot of Apple TV users are reporting issues getting Atmos from this show. That seems to be an Apple TV specific problem.

Well I'm still only getting 5.1 here.

Ep2 was nothing but filler. It ends in exactly the same place the first one did. If you skip it you won't be missing anything in the overall story.

And can someone explain the tracking fob situation? Why do the bounties have these? Does everyone in the galaxy have one?

It may have something to do with the Apple TV using Dolby MAT for sending Atmos data whereas other streaming devices are using a standard Dolby Digital Plus bitstream which includes the Atmos data.

Just a guess.

Sure but that was hardly a shocker.

If this ep is any indication this series is going to be a very slow burn.

Awful sound quality on Mandalorian and very low and weak LFE. however on emby with episode 2 it’s much better. Ep2 on Disney plus was still lacking. Glad I have emby.

Unless Emby is somehow remixing the audio, I don't understand how it could sound any different than what Disney is providing.
