The Umbrella Academy- Netflix

Netflix has finally taken the wraps off its adaptation of the Dark Horse comic The Umbrella Academy...the streaming service has posted a teaser trailer that both confirms the series' February 15th premiere date and offers a glimpse into its take on the oddball superhero show...as with the comic, the series is based on the strange premise of 43 children being born to women who hadn't been been pregnant the day before, seven of which are adopted by a billionaire who trains them to save the world...when their adopted father dies, they set out to solve the mystery- oh, and they have to prevent an apocalypse while they're at it...

Ellen Page, Colm Feore (the billionaire), Mary J. Blige and Tom Hopper (of Game of Thrones and Black Sails fame) headline the all-star cast...

I hadn't realized that Gerard Way, the creator and writer of the original comic, made the cover song for the new trailer.

starts up this Friday (or late night Thursday if you're a night owl)...it's getting mixed reviews but the visual style and weirdness are mentioned as a highlight...then again Altered Carbon got mixed reviews and I loved that show

I've been bingeing my way through other shows to start this sooner than later so it doesn't quickly sink to the bottom of my bottomless Netflix queue like so many other good shows and movies have. Unless a show is in the Marvel franchise, if I don't start it within a week or two of release, there's a good chance I won't get to it. I'm also trying to get the most out of short-term Hulu and Starz subs currently.

I just watched the first episode of the Umbrella Academy, and it's quite different from Deadly Class. Deadly Class is an actual underground school that trains teens who have no abilities to kill people and disrupt society according to some kind of anti-establishment ideals.

Umbrella Academy is about a group of 30-year-old adopted siblings, most of whom have some kind of special ability or superpowers and need to save the world from apocalyptic destruction.

Umbrella Academy is actually rated TV-14 whereas Deadly Class is rated TV MA.

rating classifications aside I'm pretty sure UA will have more sexual situations/nudity, bad language and violence...I heard that the 'I think We're Alone Now' dance montage is one of the highlights of the first episode

Based on what I've seen of both shows so far and read in Common Sense Media reviews, Umbrella Academy will probably have more incidents of graphic violence, though any violence in Deadly Class can be just as graphic. And Deadly Class has WAY stronger language (tons of f-bombs), more sexual situations, and drug use. Deadly Class is a very dark, gritty, hard-edge show. Umbrella Academy is more about the slick action. The respective soundtracks (Tiffany?) tell you every thing you need to know about each show's tone.

Looking forward to a second season.
First season was slow in many area's until the 8th episode. Now that all the basic character overview is done, can look forward to the second season with a faster pace.

I've watched 6 episodes of UA so far and Deadly Class is definitely the darker, harder-edged of the two shows. And you're right about the soundtracks as well. I'm enjoying UA but so far I'm not seeing anything all that special about it. Many of the things that happen in UA I've seen in other shows, there's not a lot of new material here, not that I'm seeing anyway. In fact, it's almost as if it wants to be a musical at some points, it's definitely not a dark sci-fi drama.

The Dolby Vision presentation as seen via an Apple TV 4K>Sony A9F looks very good, it's not blown out like a few of the DV titles I've seen. Some folks like that eyeball-searing brightness but I'm not one of them, UA does it just about right.

OT: is the image quality on the ATV better then the Netflix built-in app on your TV?...I use the built-in Netflix/Amazon/Vudu apps on my LG C7 but people rave about the ATV

I might have to watch Deadly Class...I keep hearing good things about it

I haven't really given them a serious comparison, though I've never really been a fan of using the embedded apps anyway. If I had to guess I would say they're probably very comparable though. The Apple TV 4K has an excellent video processing engine, if you have one you might give it a try.

I didn't want to start it with everything else I had in my viewing backlog across various services, and the trailer didn't knock my socks off. But based on people's endorsements in the Deadly Class thread, I decided to check it out earlier this week and got hooked. Only one more episode, and I'm totally caught up. It doesn't have the visual polish of Umbrella Academy, but the soundtrack and dark humor are excellent. Another show with a similar premise as Deadly Class doesn't immediately come to mind (though I'm sure there must be). Whereas with Umbrella Academy, at least five shows/franchises with a similar premise (a group of powered people with bad histories who don't all get along needing to pull together to save the world) immediately come to mind.

I've slogged through 5 episodes, not really a show I like. Too dark, downright ugly to me and I have not found a character I like. Premise sounded interesting, but the execution not so much. I'm torn, I've invested time, so I guess I'll stick it out.

Yes, it's nothing like Deadly Class or X-men despite what some reviews say. It's more like Odyssey 5 meets The League of Distinguished Gentlemen.

^Yes, it leans heavily into the realm of a "The League of Distinguished Gentlemen" style, not much like Deadly Class at all, UA is far lighter in tone.

I got more of a sense of Watchmen meets The Magicians...which isn't a bad thing. I didn't meant to fall asleep in the last 10 minutes of the first episode (it was late).

I absolutely want to binge all the episodes...the first 50 minutes of the first episode had me hooked to that

I finished it tonight. One of the few Netflix productions I gave a thumbs down to. The final episode had a few moments that where a little fun, but overall too dark and slow moving for my tastes. I was left with more questions that were brought up in the final episode but no answers. I guess it's just a set up for a continuation if it happens. Would have like more info as to

I just finished it today and really liked it. The show wasn’t perfect, but that’s OK IMO. It looked great in DolbyVision and the story was a good one to lead off the show with. It will not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re a fan of The Magicians or are seeking a “better” version of the DC superhero shows this fits the bill (again IMO).
