And so it begins...

“He has the new engineer and is following some of my settings – that is a move in the right direction. (Having the new engineer) is a nice helping hand.”

“I will be respectful and we are not going to be touching, but as far as giving up position is concerned that will not happen again,” the five-time World Champ told the Daily Mail.

Thanks for posting the practice results, Tack.

Certainly not what I was expecting. Unless Ferrari are sandbagging like Merc gets accused of doing every week.

Well the engine upgrade doesn't happen until tomorrow, although I don't know how much good that will do them on this track. This weekend is pretty close to must win for Ferrari.

Yes, I can confirm for everyone that Ferrari have indeed been sandbagging.
Seb has too much sand between the ears, once they get rid of that everything will be fine!

Monster of a lap from BOT. Ferrari's got no downforce. Monaco in two weeks is going to be worse.

The Bearded One really blitzed the field. He nailed the final sector with four tenths over Ham and seven tenths over Vettel. It should be noted that Vettel was fastest in the first sector by two tenths over Bottas and three tenths over Ham. A good start and Vettel could lead into turn one tomorrow.

Now for the drama. Did anyone notice that Ham didn't look to pleased after qualifying? Bottas and Vettel were chummy, but Ham acted like he was irritated. If Bottas wins the race, then how long till we see a Ham meltdown? What will be the conspiracy theories? There is already justification of Bottas's speed coming from Ham with losing one of his engineers.

You can see it coming from the HAM fanatics. They loved BOT last year, but you can see the tide turning. If we cant have a multi team battle for the championship, hopefully we can have a juicy inter team battle.

When have you ever noticed Hambone being pleased not sitting on the pole? It's as if he's quietly repeating to himself the mantra, "Not another Nico. Not another Nico! Not! Another! Nico!"

Maybe age is catching up with Lewis (34), five years senior to Valtteri.

It seems like this year’s car really suits Bottas’ driving style more than Hamilton’s, perhaps due to the aero changes for this year. Back in the day I recall drivers saying that active suspension cars had to be driven differently to get the most out of them.

It is my hope that Bottas wins the championship after being replaced by Ocon. It would be fitting for Bottas to pull a Kimi and say "F$#k off" and walk away with the title.

I have been thinking the same. It is funny that Bottas isn't playing Nico mind games. He is messing with Ham by beating him on track. Sixth tenths is a huge gap between team mates. Remember when Andretti was considered crap by Hunt for being half a second slower than Senna.

Interesting you mention that. Joe Saward said he thought Ham would continue till he wins 8 championships. If Ham didn't win this year, then he might not get there.

More favouritism from Toto. In an interview on Sky later....

Karun (cheerfully asking a question about Bottas - since that was the story wasn't it?): That was a big statement from Bottas! You don't often see someone out-qualify Lewis Hamilton by 6 tenths of a second!
Toto (annoyed): Yeah, it was a bit of an unfortunate session for Lewis, because, erm, we couldn't charge the battery properly because he pitted in Q2. Therefore his first run in Q3 was a bit compromised with the traffic, so it started on the wrong foot, but erm Valterri is in good form, and, I guess, deserves to be on pole.

He looked as if he was choking on those last words.

I agree. A question praising Bottas' great achievement gets an answer completely focused on Lewis, with a quick luke-warm mention of Bottas as an afterthought, eventually. Disgusting.

Wouldn't that be delightful? I laughed gleefully when it happened.

Hamilton is such a polarizing figure, it's hard to know what is causing him not to be keeping up with Bottas most of the time this season. Objective observers of the man and his performances are thin on the ground. What do I think? I'm Switzerland.

I’m down with this, but only if it’s Seb and Ham. Seb’s skills at wiping out a handful of front runners in one fell swoop has been battle tested in Singapore a couple seasons ago, so here’s hoping he still has what it takes.

The idea of LeClerc and Bottas going at it sounds good to me even if I can’t see it.

The only ones "going at it" are in silver cars. HAM .6 seconds off pole.... still starts second. Everyone gave Toto a hard time last week for talking themselves down, so he said screw it, and left the sandbags home.
