Absolutely! When Vettel's car came out of the grass, he was a passenger until he was able to slow down. How was he supposed to do it other than what he did, which was to ride it out? What were the stewards thinking? Jesus!

Every time I think that F1 couldn't do anything else to make it more f***ed up than it already was, it proves me wrong. This one gave me a stomach ache. Oh, well, at least it wasn't boring. That's faint praise but it's the best I can do. When something happens so grotesquely unjust, it makes me feel sorry for the Scuderia, I know that something is very wrong.

I missed that. After Brundle finished interviewing Ham and LeClaire, with Seb nowhere in sight, I turned it off.

Found the race Live on the ESPN App, as it wasn't on here in LA. I think it will be shown tonight on ESPN News at 6 PM Pacific.

They didn't even bother to run a bug or a ticker saying the race was preempted. Pretty lousy.

Why if F1 bothering to try to make future cars designed differently for closer better racing when every time there is a racing incident they put a penalty on one of the drivers?

They have made F1 into a non-racing series because look at a guy wrong and you get penalized. Taking the race away from Seb on that penalty was terrible, i feel so upset, and they took two hours of my life away, the time i spent watching that race has just become total aggravation.

I am pis**d off beyond belief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well said. I almost turned it off. Literally stupidest penalty I have seen.

I think it now needs to be said that the only racing is American racing. At least Indycar made for a nice weekend.

Great moment when Seb switched the numbers in front of the cars, putting 2 in front of the Merc and putting 1 where his car would have been had he brought it there. I actually applauded him while i was watching on my couch.

I would have been OK with the penalty going either way, but basically he left the track and cut a corner to retain his position. That's a penalty unless you give up the position.

It looks like some champions hated the penalty as well.

When multiple drivers end up in last place because of grid penalties they are still ordered by place. You can still be 16th when the drivers behind you have even larger penalties.

F1 just got a lot 'darker' today.

I remember when the Brits had real racers like Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill.

Now they're stuck with Lewis Hamilton.

MB will go undefeated this season. With or without the FIA's help.

It is interesting that I am reading some journalists who are saying it was the correct call by the letter of the rule. What I find interesting is they say both the drivers and teams were asking for the strict enforcement of the rules.

I still consider it a stupid call and apparently every driver outside of Nico Rosberg agrees.

One more thing, I read that the stewards had another camera that showed Vettel looking in the mirrors and letting the wheel move to the right instead of driving left.

I would be curious if Ham would have gotten by a couple of seconds later and Vettel repassed him if the stewards would have given him a penalty.

Yep, as obnoxious as Ham can be he is nonetheless a great driver. He reminds me of what an old friend used to say about people he didn't like back in the day: "He wants to be a nice guy but he doesn't know how."

The Driver is responsible for controlling his car, Vettel made a mistake and failed to control his car. Vettel's car damn near took out Hamilton when it returned to and then crossed the racing line, Hamilton's reflexes allowed him to avoid t-boning Vettel, in the process of avoiding Vettel Hamilton was unable to take advantage of Vettel's mistake, how convenient for Vettel. The stewards got it right and Vettel deserved every second of the penalty.

Just my humble opinion and YMMV, and yes Hamilton has a hard time displaying any personality but there is no denying he is one hell of a driver.

If Vettel had instead shredded somebody’s tires because he locked his brakes would anybody be arguing no penalty should be assessed because he wasn’t in control of the car? The only reason not to in that case is he likely destroyed his front wing, which will cost him 30-50 seconds depending on track location.

It sounds like you are describing something that happened on the highway. These guys are racing at the edge of control, that's why there are "racing incidents", which wouldn't fly in a highway situation. I don't know about HAMs reflexes saving the day, his in car cam shows him trying to seize an advantage as soon as he saw what was happening (as he should). If they were dead set on a penalty, they should have made him give up the place and let him try and get it back. Five seconds is an eternity. Ridiculous penalty.

Highway or not, drivers are responsible for controlling their car, even F-1 drivers get penalized if their mistake affects another driver. You see Hamilton diving to take advantage, that same dive meant he didn't t-bone Vettel.

I don't know if the F-1 rules allow the stewards to penalize by giving up the place then continue racing but I would agree that it would be an appropriate penalty for this, but only if the place was ceded immediately not whenever Vettel wanted to do it.

Correct. They followed the rules by handing out the penalty.

Also, Seb told a different story on his team radio than to the media. He said if he would have stayed to the left getting back on the track, Lewis would have passed him.

I understand why a lot of people were upset, but he screwed up in the lead once again and left it in the hands of the stewards.

Actually, I think the give place back thing was replaced by this five second one. I'm sure a quick call to race control saying something like "hey we gave up the place, is that enough?" probably would have avoided it. That used to happen, but there's no Charlie Whitings or Ross Brawn types around anymore apparently.

That way it's still a race no matter the outcome. Lewis seemed to have Seb's number by that point of the race, but Lewis was repeatedly misjudging the hairpin, so there was still a chance.
