Can't wait for the season to start. Already have our tickets for Canada in June.

gwsat 12-10-2018 09:22 AM

I'm ready for 2019 too. Hope springs eternal!

gt5pilot 12-10-2018 03:55 PM

it will be fun to see the cars with less aero, a real rim/tire size and see who can figure out the suspension (given that the tire was so much a part of the suspension in the past).

yankeeman 12-11-2018 05:13 AM

I am gonna miss Fernando this coming year. Even getting frustrated watching him in a bad car was better than not having him at all.

Kimi in a Sauber though should be interesting.

lobosrul 12-11-2018 07:04 AM

Mmmm, still got that new thread smell :)

I'm pretty sure the tire/rim size doesn't change until 2021.

kriktsemaj99 12-11-2018 07:58 AM

^^

Indeed. The tire size doesn't change until 2021. Two more years of the current balloons :-)

Tack 12-11-2018 09:24 AM

RIP slo mo tire flex footage.

And two more years for the vested interests to scuttle the proposal, as they have already done with the proposed engine changes.

I hate the change to big wheel rims. I love the big fat chunky tyres, it's a racing car, not something that's trying to pretend to be a road car to be "relevant"(!).

kriktsemaj99 12-11-2018 11:17 AM

I don't really dislike the current wheels either, but don't feel to strongly about the change.

Meanwhile I'm going to give formula E another look, starting this Saturday. DVR is set.

I am contemplating attending the New York Formula E race. I tried it 2 years ago, but was not impressed at that time.

Hopefully, she has a great personality, because this one is surely a two-bagger.

kriktsemaj99 12-12-2018 05:52 AM

^ Doesn't look great from that angle, but from other pics I like it...

Electric doesn't HAVE to be ugly. The wing's a bit much, but it's a good looking car.

You may be dissapointed.

FS1 is showing a documentary of some sort right now. I have not seen a screen crawl explaining why the race is not being shown.

Ericglo 12-15-2018 05:13 AM

The race was at 7 EST. It is already over.

JEV should have won.

Guide data for D* shows it on FS1 now. Oh well.

mrtickleuk 12-15-2018 05:47 AM

Should be available for you on YouTube in HD.
Great podium ceremony - driving the cars onto the podium! Formula E isn't afraid to innovate and try things like that.
The "attack mode" wasn't the mario-kart gimmick that I feared it might be, which was good. Sooo much better without a car change. Full flat-out close racing for the whole time. Cracking stuff.

kriktsemaj99 12-15-2018 07:06 AM

The new cars are pretty good, but I hope they have some better tracks. That was like racing through a building site. Overall an improvement, and luckily I had recorded enough that I (eventually) found the race. it was shown before the qualifying for some reason.

Ericglo 12-15-2018 07:53 AM

The FS1 presentation sucked compared to the youtube.

I will comment later

Tack 12-15-2018 11:54 AM

I got some kind of boxing thing when E was supposed to be on. Whatever.

Ericglo 12-15-2018 03:12 PM

I have to get this out of the way first.

I woke up early (for me, BG :)) to watch both the pre-race and race on FS1. From the moment the broadcast started, I was regretting my decision. Steve Matchett tried to give an overview of the new season along with interspersing the live feed pre-race. It was pitiful.

FS1 used the live feed for the race, but cut to commercials a couple of times. I felt a little lost upon return, because the commentators didn't give an update. Of course, they have no clue that there is commercials, so I don't blame them. The live feed itself felt a little disjointed though. I was confused more than once with the information presented.

Post race was almost non existent on FS1.

After Mr. Tick said it was on youtube, I went back and watched the pre and post race. The whole broadcast was two hours compared to the one and a half hour FS1. It was a lot better. The program had a lot better flow to it. It was much more enjoyable. I didn't compare the quality of each broadcast, but youtube said it was 1080p. It looked a little bit starved to me. It would be great to see them use 4k cameras like the ones that CNET's Tim Stevens used in the video I posted a couple of weeks ago. It may not be feasible, but it would have people watching for the eye candy alone.

My recommendation is to watch the Formula E races on youtube.

mrtickleuk 12-15-2018 04:13 PM

Missing out parts of the race is insane. And insulting! Did you get the commentary with Dario Franchitti, Jack Nicholls and Bob Varsha?
Bob doesn't really contribute much, but Dario and Jack are a great team.

That was a major dissapointment last season in the handful of races I watched.....virtually no Varsha, and even less from Matchett.

Yes, they have the commentary. Nicholls isn't bad, but I would love to have Varsha as play by play.

Enough about the broadcast.:)

The race was entertaining. DAC did a great job to get the win. Vergne probably would have won without the penalty. Massa moved forward then lost it all with the penalty. Stof was a non factor.

I am not sure how I feel about the attack zones. It was different. I didn't like fan boost. That is to gimmicky to me.

The Bloodhound project has been saved from financial doom to tackle the land-speed record of 763mph.

I guess i am an old fashioned fart, but i dont like any jet or rocket cars, to me the land speed record is the fastest a piston engined car has ever gone. I also disagree totally with taking an average of two runs to get the land speed record. Hell, if you do 600 one way and 580 the other way, now they say your record is 590, but in reality you DID hit 600 so that should be the record as long as its within a pre-determined wind parameter. Man, where is the great old Mickey Thomson Challenger when you need it, how i loved that car.

That's so you can't take advantage of a tailwind.

I do think they should keep a separate record for power-to-the-wheel (piston/turbine/rotary) cars versus jet or rocket though. Maybe they do.
