I have EPIX subscription through Prime Video and like the integration of shows I am watching inside the Fire TV UI, but sadly there is no 4K offering on any shows or movies that I have browsed through. Would enjoy 4K versions of War of the Worlds, Get Shorty, Berlin Station, Deep State and Pennyworth.

Really is becoming a bit frustrating when all of these premium video (4K, HDR. DV) and premium audio (ATMOS) offerings from streaming providers are all contingent on a specific subscription path or specific hardware manufacturer configuration.
I have EPIX as part of my package through my cable provider (FiOS)...I use the EPIX app through the Apple TV 4K...there are 2 apps- EPIX Now (which is for people without a cable sub at $5.99/month) and another free EPIX app (for people with a cable sub)...I use the 2nd one but I'm sure they're both the exact same as far as content and specs (similar to HBO Now and HBO Go)...when using the app 4K is available for a bunch of movies and a few original shows...you get DD 5.1 with the 4K movies but only stereo with non-4K content

Says it requires a login usually to your cable service that may carry EPIX.

$6 is not going to break the bank but I'll check for a deal on the Roku app version since I want 4K episodes which someone says above isn't available on the Prime version.

Yup I thought you had cable but just didn't want to pay the extra for Epix.

I had the EPIX app on a Roku TCL TV capable of 4K, HDR and DV and did not get any 4K content. Perhaps it is different with the standalone EPIX NOW app. Previous post said they had 4K through their FIOS cable subscription. Perhaps it is limited to certain cable providers if you go that route. Just an FYI.

if you're using Amazon Prime Video then 4K won't be available...it's only when using the EPIX apps...have you tried the EPIX Now app?

they used to have a very limited selection of 4K content but recently they added a whole bunch of Marvel movies in 4K (no HDR)...along with select original series like War of the Worlds and Perpetual Grace LTD

My initial experience was with the EPIX app outside of Prime Video and there was no 4K content available.

I then subscribed to EPIX through Prime Channels, so I don't have the option of EPIX NOW app. I believe that would only be available if I had subscribed directly with EPIX. And, it sounds like 4K might only be available if you are using an Apple TV device. There are so many caveats on what will and won't work with these streaming services based on your hardware configuration at the moment. Not a big deal currently. The EPIX 1080p content through Prime Video channel upscaled on a 4K set looks pretty good from my viewing distance. Not sure I would notice a big difference. HDR and Dolby Vision treatment is what would make a noticeable difference and that doesn't sound like something they are currently providing. Thanks for the information.

yeah the 4K SDR content I watched on the EPIX app looks cleaner and a bit sharper but overall not all that different from the 1080p version so you're not really missing much...

Agreed. HDR and Dolby Vision are the video treatments that my aging eyes can still recognize!!

I signed up for the 7 day "free trial" via Roku for EPIX Now. Not only did the video not look 4K but looked more like 720p! Sound only stereo while when I watched the first 3 episodes on Amazon it was 5.1. So I also added the app to my Nvidia Shield TV where the image was better but probably just 1080p. Does anyone actually know if the series is presented anywhere in 4K?

One thing is that I logged into the Roku app in the evening and it wanted me to do the number code. My computers were off for the evening so I used my Android phone. It's possible that EPIX set the stream up for my phone not the TV. So I'll try the Roku app again which still has an option on the trial to enter a code. Maybe that will work. The show is dark so I'm not sure how much it benefits by 4K except for the few brightly lit scenes.

And after watching episode 4 (twice actually) I see why they stopped the free episodes at episode 3.

I missed last week and won't watch the rest of the series. The last thing I want to watch now is this kind of show. Out here in the SF Bay Area, it's like Zombie Apocalypse with people hoarding everything that they can especially, for some reason, toilet paper. There were fights in a Costco up the the road from me over TP and other paper goods. It kind of reminds me of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. After President Kennedy made his nationally televised broadcast, laying out the severity of the what was happening and announcing the blockade of Cuba, there was a run on everything. I was 13 at the time and wasn't certain that I would make it to 14. We didn't even know how close we came to an all out nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union until years later (the movie 13 Days is very instructive). If that would been known, God knows what kind of looting and rioting there might have been. That crisis was "resolved" because men ultimately negotiated with other men. This time around there's nobody to negotiate with. I'll say this every time I post: All of you, use your best judgement and stay safe and healthy.

in related news, earlier today Paramount announced that they are releasing the 2005 Tom Cruise War of the Worlds movie on 4K Blu-ray on May 19th...the 1080p Blu-ray had reference audio so I'm expecting something epic with Atmos...hopefully the 4K visuals are a nice step up as well...

I’m watching this through ATV4K and it's listed as 4K UltraHD 5.1 @24hz and it looks nothing like 4K. It looks like an average HD show so far IMO.

I am enjoying the show itself quite a bit however.

It looks like almost every other 4K NON-HDR anything that’s on Netflix, Prime etc. if this had HDR, it would look different. I do watch a lot of Netflix ( and a couple of the Epic channel) shows that are 4K only and they all look about the same.

I am also really enjoying the show too, so, there’s that!

Didn't that movie had a stylized picture with blown out whites, de-saturated colors with extra "grain" ? I wonder how that gets transferred to HDR 4K. Yes Atmos could be very good here depending on who would do the remix.

you're right about the visuals which is why I'm hoping for an improved 4K picture...I think Spielberg wanted a specific look for the movie...the movie also didn't really have a lot of color to it which is why I'm thinking the HDR might be a bit restrained...although the storm and tripod laser beam visuals have a chance to pop with some nice spectral highlights

Well I liked Falling skies. And it production values were 10 times better than this show, They should have never been able to use the War of the World name IMHO. But I do like how this show used a different way to kill humans with the Brain wave.

IMDB lists it only as HD but IMDB doesn't necessarily have accurate tech specs. Could also have been shot mostly in 3.2K which is better than HD but still not 4K. It makes the post work go easier. I signed up for EPIXNow to watch the remaining episodes as well as a few good originals that EPIX has. Funny thing was I noticed an improvement of picture quality once the one week free trial period was over.

No 5.1 audio in EPIX app?

Does anyone use the EPIX app, the one that requires TV provider login? I just got a free 30 days of EPIX through YouTube TV and was hoping to watch content in 5.1 audio through the app. I'm able to login no problem, but no 5.1 audio on my Roku Premiere+. Before trying my FireTV sticks, I wanted to make sure 5.1 audio was even available through the app.

I use the EPIX app via Apple TV 4K (using my Verizon FiOS login) ...all the 4K programming has 5.1 audio...1080p programming is stereo

That sucks. I don't see a way to access the 4K version of content on the app for Roku (which is 4K compatible). Maybe I'll try the 4K FireTV stick.

I watched the first three episodes on Amazon where the audio was 5.1 then added EPIXNow to my Roku apps but sound is only stereo there.

Possibly showrunners used to 6 episode European series and asked to do more episodes to fill part of a cable season. Guess they have to fill it with something.

Spectrum customers - you have free Epix until April 19. Spectrum is offering this due to the epidemic/crisis to give subscribers more to watch. You can now binge watch this if you haven't already.
